Constipation And Homeopathy
July 17, 2007
ARE you tired of taking laxatives? And want to feel fresh as a Lilly every morning? A combination of homeopathy and lifestyle changes can help you get rid of your problem and that too permanently. But, first, what exactly is constipation and why do people suffer so frequently . Constipation is often misunderstood. Many people think they are constipated when, in fact, their bowel movements are regular.
For example, some people believe they are constipated, or irregular, if they do not have a bowel movement every day. However, there is no right number of daily or weekly bowel movements. Normal may be three times a day or three times a week depending on the person. But having a hard stool or having to strain hard and for a long time for it is certainly called constipation. An unsatisfied feeling after the motion is also considered constipation.
The most common cause of constipation is a diet low in fibre (fibre is found in vegetables, fruits and whole grain, and high in fats found in cheese, eggs and meat). People who eat plenty of high-fibre foods are less likely to become constipated. Liquids like water and juice add fluid to the colon and bulk to stools, making bowel movements softer and easier.
Lack of exercise can lead to constipation, although doctors do not know precisely why. For example, constipation often occurs after an accident or during an illness when one must stay in bed and cannot exercise.
Myths about constipation have led to a serious abuse of laxatives. This is common among people who are preoccupied with having a daily bowel movement. The colon begins to rely on laxatives to bring on bowel movements. Over time laxatives can damage nerve cells in the colon and interfere with the colon’s natural ability to contract.
Homoeopathic medicines Nux Vomica, Bryonia, Alumina and Alumen ? are very helpful in the treatment of constipation, Nux Vomica is indicated in cases where ineffectualness is the key symptom. The patient feels unsatisfied after passing stool and has to defecate two-three times before he feels contented.
Bryonia is generally a medicine for those who suffer from dry large hard stool, which causes a lot of discomfort while passing. Alumina is very important for constipation in children and infants who have to strain hard even for soft stool and may have to remain without passing stool for days together. Alumen (made from common potash) is often indicated for the most severe form of this problem where patient can go even a week without passing stool.
