Ankylosing Spondylitis

If you are having an early-morning stiffness and pain in your lower back, which becomes better or reduces during the day with exercise or as you get into your routine and have also persisted for more than three months, there are chances that it could be more than just a simple wear and tear in your back. You could be suffering from ankylosing spondylosis (AS).
Ankylosing Spondylitis is a disease that causes arthritis of the spine and the sacroiliac joints. The sacroiliac joints are located in the low back where the sacrum (the bone directly above the tailbone) meets the iliac bones (bones on either side of the upper buttocks). In a person suffering from AS, joints and ligaments that normally allow the spine to move, get inflamed and stiffen up. This inflammation takes place where the ligaments or tendons are attached to the bones. As a result the elastic tissue is replaced by bony growth. Continued forming of new bone can lead to fusion of the vertebrae (bones of spine) thus leading to great reduction in the movement of spine. AS can also affect eyes, lungs, bowel and heart.
Ankylosing spondylitis affects males 2-3 times more commonly than females. Researches suggest that there is a strong link of AS being genetically inherited. The HLA-B27 gene can be detected in most patients with ankylosing spondylitis. This disease is thought to be an auto immune disorder, which means that body’s own defense cells damage the joints of the spine
Pain and stiffness are the first symptoms and are usually felt in the low back and upper buttocks. Rest of the spine and neck can also be affected. The starting of pain and stiffness is usually in a gradual manner which worsens over a period of months .It is very rare that these symptoms become worse suddenly. Mostly the pain is felt in the morning or after prolonged periods of inactivity. This pain and stiffness becomes better with movement. In advanced cases where the fusion of the spine has taken place there is complete loss of mobility. The areas become brittle and are vulnerable to get fractured. The spine becomes inflexible (bamboo spine) which also makes standing and walking difficult.
Diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis is mainly dependant on the history of the symptoms and x-ray findings. HLA b-27 gene marker is also found to be present in the patients suffering from ankylosing spondylitis. Diagnosis of AS is usually delayed as the pain is attributed to more common back problems.
Homoeopathic treatment can be a great boon to the patients if the intervention is started well in time. In this disorder too, the homoeopathic medicines work by optimising the body’s overactive immune (defense) system. The stage of the disease at which the homeopathic treatment is started, is a major factor in determining the outcome of the treatment. For example if the treatment is started in the initial stages when not too much of the elastic tissue is lost, the prognosis are very good and the condition can be reversed in most of the cases .In stages where extensive bone formation has replaced elastic tissue, homeopathic medicines may not be able to reverse the situation but can still help in easing many symptoms. Among other Homoeopathic medicines, I have found Aesculus Hippocastanum as an extremely effective remedy in treating ankylosing spondylitis.
Self care in ankylosing spondylitis
Regular and moderate amount exercise can have a great effect in reducing the severity of disease also in slowing the progression.
Stretching and range of motion exercise have a very important role in the self care for those suffering from AS.
Despite the stiffness, maintain a proper posture.
Specific breathing techniques can help in maintaining good expandability of lungs.

Sir, I am suffering with Neck pain, neck stiffness. Previously i used Pain killers for 20 years. Now i stopped from the last two months. I am applying VOLINI Gel on neck, and applying Hot Water bag on neck region daily two times. Doctors said it is Spondilities, some one said Ankolising Spondilities, some said it is Rheumatioid Arthirites.
I am also having Allergy, Sinus, Acid Reflux, BP, Sugar.

7. Jamboline compound – Non sugar base 5 ml twice a day.
But i am fearing about this personal medication. Am i using correctly. Do i have to continue or Stop. For this advice also i will pay the fees. Please tell me. Most of the doctors not allowing me to discuss about this. They simply want money. They are telling me to stop this medicines and they will give the medicines with out Name. They wont disclose the names.

I am 29 yrs old. After 4-5 yrs of pain and inflammation, I came to know that I have AS. My MRI first showed damaged Left hip joint on July’2007 and my ESR was also 55mm/hr. My HLAb-27 is +ve. i am a 25 year old male, have been suffering from ankylosing spondilities for past four and half years. i basically have tried everything but nothing seems to work. at present i am problem while breathing. i can not expand my chest very well. inthe i feel extream stiffness all over my body. neck , shoulder, forearm, lower back, ribcage, and espically left hip to calf mucsle and knees. my right hip joint, legs , knees are all okay. from the day i was diagnosed with this disease till now the left hip joint are the worst sufferer. i have problem while waking. it is very stiff, rigid, and pain full. after sometimes while walking first i feel a cramp and heaviness in the left hip joint , knees and calf muscle. after that the while inflamation and pain starts. sometimes i feel that the whole left leg would break in to pieces. for last two days i am taking aesculus hippocastanum mother tinture. i am using 4 drops in one cup of water. i dont know wheather i am in right direction or not. please help me and suggest me medicine and dosage so that i can get litle relief.

Read your article on the net on AS, unfortunately I am HLA B27 positive. I am 30 Years old and had two attacks of iridocyclitis one when I was 17 Years old and 2nd when I was 29. I had severe back pain when I was : 23 and then 27 years old… Currently the pain has again started but the pain is not in the lower back… Its around the chest region.. The pain increases during night while I am asleep and I need to get up for an Hr or so every night to reduce the pain.
I have started Ibrufain and Sazo-500 on my own.
Need your Help and Guidance to fight this in a proper way.

My job was of touring nature,sometimes self used to travel for 15 to 20 days in a month.Now my age is 54 years and I never bothered for the backaches and other
related pains in the spinal region and took on the counter medicines as and when required.I have a growth in the back of neck which is not growing since it has noticed.

I have had AS since I was 24 and not one doctor has been able to help me. My chest,jaws,neck are fused and my back is at abent at an 86 degree angle. My neck is pulling me foward. As per doctor I have to do change in my life style (with extensive back bone care and regular exercise) with medicine (Indocap SR, Nucort M-4 and Floxan MR. I am became to know my problem from last two year.

I have been detected with ankylosing spondylosis in Sept 2009. I was seriously affected by the disease and became immobile due to pain and swelling in knee, ankle etc. The disease is detected by MRI, X -rays , HLAB 27 test. I am undergoing treatment which consists of Sazoo 1000, Etova 400. Meanwhile I had to take depomedrol injections ( 4 of 80 mg and 6 of 40 mg over two months).
Now my condition has improved but the diseaase is not under fully control as reflected from high level of ESR and residual synovities in ankle / knee.
I am also taking physiotherapy ( excercise therapy) and pranayam.
Can homeopathy treatment be started at this stage and is it possible to take homeopathy medicine along with the present medicine ( sazo 1000) which I am taking ? Pls advise.

My husband very often complains of back pain in the morning ( as soon as he wakes up ) …this pain usually eases out during the day.
Now the thing is that his maternal uncle has been suffering from Ankylosing spondilitis for last 8 years.
Reading your article I am a little concerned …should I get him checked for AS as soon as possible ??

I am 37 yrs . I am suffering from severe pain on the upper left side of my chest. This hapening since 2 yeras. The pain is increasing day by day.Some time the pain pinch the left lung at the time of breathing and at that time I have to stop breathing for half to one minute .Then slowly it stop.

hello sir,I am 33 yrs old. 8 yrs b4 i was having heavy dendruff (scalp on head) same time my right leg was swollen(L joint),i went for homeopathic treatment but the pain was not control.so i switched over to allopathic.after MRI test doctor said it is soriasis arhritis.after 6 month coarse i was fine.but one year later skin problem start,for few month it get high and later on decrease.it was at my back,hips and leg and also bside nose.i use to go skin specialist.next after one year my neck pain started.so i treated for the same.this was due to spondylisis as dr said.after next 6 month coarse neck pain vanish.Now from last 2 yrs m facing severe joint pain,(shoulder,hand wrist,finger swelling,stiffness at morning,skin problem)during summer it decrease but during rainy and winter it becomes horrible for me.recently m having saaz 500,naprosyn 250,aciloc from last 8 months.when i try to avoid naprosyn pain rises.

Hello Everyone,
Me to suffering from the so called disease ‘Ankylosing Spondylitis’. I got it discovered some where around in October-2009.
Initially, symptoms was – Stiff lower back, Right buttock pain (some where in body, can’t be identified by touching), pain sensation in right thigh.
This pain keep on increasing day by day, but gradually in a static motion. I kept it ignoring and thought it might be just, some how type of pain.
I started consulting the docs at – AIIMS-Delhi, Kailash Hospital-Gr.Noida, Meerut, Noida, Allopathy, Homeopathy, Naturopathy. No one was able to even diagnose the issue, apart from the tests being carried ouot, including MRI, X-Ray, Blood Test. Luckily, I met with an Ortho at Yashoda Hospital in Ghaziabad (Dr. Ajay Pawar). He finally diagnosed the issue, that was AS.
As per his advice, I started taking – Indocap-SR, SAZO DS 1000mg, Folvite AND Defza. These medicines done magic for me. Pain has gone completely. But one cannot take medicine (alopathy) for long time. So my doc advised me for regular exercise and to loose the weight. Obesity makes the AS, horrible. I am improving day by day.
Now I forgot, where the pain was. Now I can live the pain free life again.
I am ready to share my thoughts with anyone having AS.
