HEMORRHOIDS AND HOMEOPATHY
November 8, 2007
For Vikram (not his real name), pain around the anus was becoming a big problem This excruciating pain would continue for hours after passing stool. He was also passing blood along with stool. Vikram at times was having difficulty in concentrating at his job, as the pain would go on for hours and an uncomforting feeling was always there. Each morning, passing stool was like a nightmare, and if he had to go twice, then nearly the whole day would pass in pain. He knew that this surely had something to do with his constipation problem, which he was having for the last decade or so. A visit to the general practitioner confirmed that he was suffering from piles (also known as hemorrhoids).
How can homeopathy help?
A combination lifestyle changes and homeopathic treatment can be a great relief to a person suffering from piles, as it eliminates the possibility of surgery. Moreover, a thorough homeopathic treatment can remove the tendency and thereby prevent its recurrence.
Nux Vomica is one of the leading medicines for treating piles that are coupled with constipation. Aesculus is very effective for nearly all kinds of painful piles. Aloes is useful when the piles are swollen and painful and protrude out like a bunch of grape. Calc flour is very important medicine as it treats the tendency to develop piles. Hamemelis and Millefolium can handle bleeding from piles quite well.
Although 30 c potency of the above mentioned medicines can be used in an acute case, but for prolonged use, please consult a professional homeopath.
What are hemorrhoids and who gets them?
The term hemorrhoids or piles refers to a condition in which the veins around the anus or lower rectum are swollen and inflamed. Hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women. About half of the population has hemorrhoids by age 50. Hemorrhoids may result from straining to move stool. Other contributing factors include pregnancy, ageing, chronic constipation or diarrhoea. Hemorrhoids are either inside the anus (internal) or under the skin around the anus (external). Although many people have hemorrhoids, not all experience symptoms. The most common symptom of internal hemorrhoids is bright red blood covering the stool, or in the toilet bowl. However, an internal hemorrhoid may protrude through the anus outside the body, becoming irritating and painful.
Symptoms of external hemorrhoids may include painful swelling or a hard lump around the anus. In addition, excessive straining, rubbing, or cleaning around the anus may cause irritation with bleeding and/or itching, which may produce a vicious cycle of symptoms.
Prevention by lifestyle modification
Some simple lifestyle modifications can help one, prevent and even cure piles. A softer stool and regular bowel movements are its main goals. A softer stool makes emptying the bowels easier and lessens the pressure on hemorrhoids caused by straining.
Increasing fluid intake
Increasing fluid intake can help in reducing the hardness of the stools. Drinking six to eight glasses of fluid (not alcohol) results in softer, bulkier stools.
High-fiber diet
Good sources of fiber are fruits, vegetables and whole grains. In addition, a fiber supplement such as psyllium can be very helpful.
Do not hold the urge
Prevent holding the urge, as it can lead to irregular bowel movement and also hardening of the stools.
Regular exercise
Regular exercise, including walking, can be very effective in regulating your digestive system.

Dear Doctor,
The Piles problem I have are exactly as described on your web. Swelling, bleeding, pain, discofort I’ve been living with this misery for over 15
Dear sir
I have been suffering from the Piles/Fissure from the past 1-1.5 years and in between it has been cured and its revoking repeatedly.
Recently i went to doctor and told him the same but after taking the medicine the pain has gone up and the bleeding has taken place on passing the stool. After taking the hamemellis and ratanhia for 2 days at least the blood stopped coming but there is severe pain in the anus when pass the stool for the first time and every time i pass the stool for the first few minutes till the large chunk of stool comes out. One more thing i have observed is that there is small ball kind (mass from the rectum has come out permanently but not going inside at all).Is there any reason why it has come out and staying there for the full time though i have been using the medicine regularly.
Kind regards
sreedhargvn
Dear doctor,
I think I am suffering from internal hemorrhoids but I am not too thrilled about the idea of going to a doctor to have it visually checked. I am 19 years old, and when I pass stool a ball-type swelling comes out with it. Sometimes it does not go back inside again so I have to push it back in. It is not painful, but quite irritating and uncomfortable. This has been going on for around 8 months. I would like to know if there is any remedy for this problem, like a cream or something I can take orally along with a change of diet? I would really appreciate if you could offer me any sort of advice.
Thank you
Kitten
