Sciatica Treatment

October 4, 2009

The sciatic nerve happens to be the largest nerve in our body. It starts from the lower part of the spinal cord and runs down through the hips and the back of the thigh into the lower leg and foot.  The word ‘Sciatica ‘describes a condition of pain and sometimes numbness in the area through which the sciatic nerve passes. Homeopathic medicines can be of   great help to patients who suffer from sciatica. Homeopathic treatment of sciatica usually produces no side effect and the relief is mostly permanent.

Sciatica or the pain in the course of the sciatic nerve occurs when there is a compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve by a problem in the lower back or in the course of sciatic nerve. The most common back problems that cause this kind of pain is the disc prolapse or the disc bulge other conditions being spodylolithesis (slipping of vertebrae one over the other) and spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal).

Our spine comprises of mainly three structures; bones (vertebrae), the intervertebral disks and the spinal cord. Spinal Bones called as vertebrae are stacked one on top of each other to form the spine or the backbone. Through these spinal bones passes the spinal cord. Intervertabral Discs are a kind of cushions (which act like small shock absorbers and also help in provide flexibility to the backbone) that are positioned between two vertebrae. It is when these discs get pushed (due to aging and wear -tear and arthritis), that the nerve roots of sciatic nerve get compressed or irritated. This leads to an inflammation on the nerve roots causing pain in the course of sciatic nerve.

Sciatica pain usually radiates from the lower part of the back through the buttocks and into the back of the leg and calf muscle. Sciatica pain can range from a very mild ache or spasm in the back of the leg to a very severe incapacitating pain. It can at times be felt like sudden electric shocks or jolts. Usually, only one leg is affected by sciatica. Sciatica pain may also be accompanied by feeling of numbness and weakness in the leg and foot. Patients suffering from sciatica may also complain of tingling or pins and needle sensation in toes and foot. In an advanced case of disc bulge and nerve compression patients may lose their control over bladder and bowel movement. This is a rare but a serious condition and requires an immediate emergency care.

Homeopathic treatment for sciatica is of great help in reliving the pain and treating the disc bulge effectively. Homeopathic medicines are able to help by improving the degenerative changes  in the disc and the vertebrae. Homeo medicines also effectively treat the inflammation on the nerve roots caused by compression thereby reducing the sciatica pain. Homeopathic medicines Rhus tox , Arnica Calcarea Flour are very useful in treating the Arthritic changes  lumbar spine. For reducing neuritis (inflammation of nerve) homeopathic medicines Colocynth ,Magnesium Phos and Hypericum have wonderful properties. Gnaphlium is very effective in treating sciatica that is accompanied by numbness in the leg.

L4-L5 Normal. L5-S1 level There is a central annular bulge present with no significantt compression on the thecal sac. the exit foramina are patent bilaterally but no nerve root compression is seen within the exit foramina. I have severe pain travelling from lowerc back to the thighs through right hip. It extends up to lower portion of right knee. From my MRI of lower spine, Dr. has told that disc at L3 & L5 have given up their place and these are pressing the Sciatica nerve causing pain. They have advised Micro Surgery for the same. But I am a bit afraid of the surgery. Please suggest me Homepathy treatment for the same.

I’m M 36 and having pain in right buttock n throughout my right leg, sometimes in left too in similar way. MRI report shows L4-L5 canel APD 10 mm & L5-S1 10.5 mm. Result of both are same as disc dessication. Bulging disc. Posterocentral disc prolapse. Neuroforaminal and central canal stenosis. Cauda equina compression. And the suggestion is 1. spondylosis deformans with degenerative disc dieseas. & 2. L4-L5 posterocentral disc prolapse causing central canal and neuroforminal stenosis with compressive radioculopathy.
I want the suggestion where and how i can be treated. Whether it is curable and how long it will take? Whom should i contact? I am serving in defence and presently in tripura and going through physio therapy by applying traction of 10 kg half am hour twice a day. I’m having this pain since last 6 months. Kindly help.mail me in my given ID rajeshsharma.3006@gmail.com

I have had right leg sciatica for about a year now. Lots of pain upon standing that seems to begin in my lower back and travels down my right leg. My right hip aches at times too. My right calf throbs. And the muscles in the arches of both my feet cramp when I am lying down or sitting. I have gone through two courses of chiropractic treatment and one course of acupuncture. I have tried various exercises but I am not improving. Sometimes the pain is so bad I could cry. I have tried several homeopathic combination sciatica remedies without success. Maybe I did not take them for long enough periods of time? I am a strong believer in homeopathy and feel I may not have tried the right remedy or taken the remedies I have found long enough. My chiropractor thinks I have a bulging disc and is now suggesting an MRI, maybe surgery etc. but I am not going that route. Any help you can forward to me would be much appreciated! Thank you!

My spouse is suffering from spinal cord compression of osteochondroma (first surgery already done in 2002 removing the tumor). Now the tumor is about 3.5 X 3.5 cm in vertebra affecting T9-T10 levels. We would like to know whether homeopathy can solve this problem? ( he walks with great difficulty).

I would be grateful upon receiving your valuable suggestions.

Got something to say?
