Fractures and Osteoporosis

Fractures and osteoporosis

image As the gap between the various medical systems narrows down, the term ‘alternative medicine’ is slowly dying a well deserved death. It is being replaced by a more holistic term ‘integrated medicine’ where the best of all the system integrate to serve the humanity at its best. Slowly a lot many medicines from different disciplines are being accepted into the mainstream medicine because of their high efficacy in treating a particular illness. One such medicine from the homoeopathic system of medicine is Symphytum Officinale. Its extreme effectiveness in treating osteoporosis and healing fractures is what puts it into this category.

What is Symphytum?

Symphytum is a homoeopathic medicine made from root and leaves of the plant called Comfrey or Symphytum Officinale and is usually used homeopathically in a highly diluted form. The impressive wound-healing properties of Symphytum are due to the presence of allantoin. Allantoin is known to stimulate cell proliferation and so augments wound-healing both inside and out. Allantoin is known to stimulate osteoblasts, the bone building cells.

Osteoporosis and Symphytum

Osteoporosis literally means porous bones. It is a slow, progressive disease characterized by a gradual loss of calcium from bones until they become very porous and weak. Normally, bones are composed of a shell of compact or solid bone surrounding connecting plates and rods of bone (spongy bone) within which lie the bone marrow.

Two types of cell regulate the growth of bone: osteoclasts and osteoblasts. The osteoclasts function to dissolve older bone and leave tiny unfilled spaces behind. The osteoblasts then move into these spaces and produce new bone. After menopause or after middle age when the level of hormones go down ,the new bone forming cells also cease to function normally. Thus in osteoporosis, the amount of both compact and spongy bone is reduced. Thinning of the outer layer of compact bone greatly reduces its strength and increases the likelihood of fracture. Symphytum is of great help in osteoporosis as it increases the activity of osteoblasts which are ‘new bone’ forming cells. Thus helps in recovering from osteoporosis in the most natural way. It can also be of great help in fractures resulting due to osteoporosis. Other Homoeo-medicines such as Calcarea Carb, Calcarea phos are also of great help in treating osteoporosis by assimilating the various nutrients in the body.

Fractures and Symphytum

When a bone fractures, osteoblasts need to go into an overdrive around the fracture site, to lay down more collagen fibers and minerals on top to strengthen them. Symphytum acts as a catalyst in this situation. It increases the activity of new bone forming cells (osteoblasts) in the area of fracture. Symphytum is to be used only once the broken bone has been brought to its original position. Symphytum is indicated in cases where the healing of fracture is delayed e.g. in old people, osteoporosis etc .It is also recommended for pain in old fractures.

Preventing and treating Osteoporosis

Exercise and Lifestyle

Taking regular exercise is the single most important action anyone can take to improve the strength of their bones. The sort of exercise that’s beneficial in preventing osteoporosis is weight-bearing, such as walking or aerobics.

Regular Calcium Intake

Regular intake of calcium is essential throughout life for healthy bones. The recommended intake of calcium for an adult of calcium is 800mg. On average, 250ml milk or 150g yoghurt contains 300mg of calcium.

Early diagnoses

Early diagnoses can help in reducing the complications associated with osteoporosis. A bone density scan early in midlife can be of a great help in diagnosing and thereby preventing osteoporosis.

    1. Left knee joint pain while walking.

Brief History: I am now 70. In 1970, I encountered a heavy charge on my left knee while playing a foot-ball tournament in Raipur, then M.P(now Chhattisgarh) where I was working in Railways’ Workshop. After that it became normal after homeo medicine arnica with mother tincture. I was alright through out my life. Since last year, felt slight pain and cracking while walking. After walking a while, it became normal. But now since last May 2012, real problem started and done x-ray and prescribed by Orthopaedic Dr. for Pysiotherapy and feeling slight better. I started to take Arnica 1M and got good result for a few days lasting. Now, today I started Symphytum 10M. I took also Arnica 10M one day before.

    Please advise me accordingly.

    1. 1. Lightheadedness : it is like Lightheadedness after getting down from long train-journey. While getting up from chair or seat and on walking too(very light giddiness – more or less always). Though, it is within control to perform normal work, but feeling a lightheadedness which disturbs my concentration of mind to do any work, particularly on walking(morning walking). It was felt from July 2012. ENT specialist cleared me prescribing ‘No problem’ (Virtigo) .
Now I am taking Carbo Veg. 200 one dose daily before going to bed 20 /30 mins. after dinner to avoid any gas formation. Feeling a slight improvement.
A few days back, I started to take Kali Carb. 6, 8hrs dose as is prescribed in the book The Prescriber by Dr. John H Clarke.

Please advise me the better medicine. I am(70) a retired railway officer(IRSME). Health normal – no high or low BP, no sugar, no cardio-vascular problem. Having uric acid under strict control taking regular medicine(Zyloric/Zyrik 100mg.- a allopathic medicine). t. 64/65kg. , ht. 5’6″. If anything more information required, feel free to ask me.

    With best wishes,

  16. Dear Dr. Sharma,

I just found your page as I was browsing the internet to find studies related to bone cancer, more precisely invasion of the soft tissues, which has caused a fracture in one of the vertebrae. I found that Symphytum Officinalis could be one of the possible remedies, but some studies show that rosmarinic acid contained in Comfrey could cause liver problems. Can you please clarify this for me? I have a friend who has been diagnosed soft tissue invasion at L5 and it has metastasized to the vertebrae at S1. It has cracked and fractured that vertebrae. He will undergo a needle biopsy on 9-24-2013
Any information in regard to the above mentioned homeopathic remedy would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Lora Ben

    Dear Dr. Sharma,
I would appreciate advice re: recent severe fracture and subsequent surgery to shoulder joint and osteopenia.

I am presently eating a primarily vegan diet, but do eat some yogourt. I am a former dancer, but can no longer do many weight bearing exercises. I am now taking ( post surgery) symphytum and calc phos 3 x a day. While taking these are there foods that I need to avoid? Will it be beneficial to continue these homeopathics to help strengthen bones?

    Thank you, Tonia Shimin
