SCIATICA AND ITS HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENT
Sciatic nerve happens to be the longest nerve in our body. It starts from our spinal cord in the lower back and passes down through the hip into the back area of the lower leg When we say ‘Sciatica’ we refer to the pain in this sciatic nerve. As this nerve passes down through the pelvis, hip and to the backside of the lower leg, the sciatica pain whenever it occurs, is felt in the areas through which it passes. This nerve controls many muscles of the lower leg and also controls the sensation of thigh, leg and feet.
Pain that travels from the lower back or from the hip through the back part of the thigh to the lower part of the leg or to the foot is usually very indicative of sciatica.
Sciatica pain can range from a simple dull ache to severe electric like shocks. The pain can at times be so severe that the patient may hardly be able to move out of bed. Usually patients complain of pain while walking or standing but at times reverse of this happens, the pain is worse while lying down in a normal sleeping or lying posture and patient has no other option other than to stand or walk or lie in certain uncomfortable posture
Patients with sciatica may suffer from additional symptoms such as numbness and weakness along the course of nerve, tingling and pins and needles feeling (mostly in the foot or toes) and loss of bladder and bowel control ( this an emergency medical condition).
Sciatica is not a disease in itself but a symptom of the sciatic nerve being irritated or compressed (’pinched’ as one may call it in a layman?s language) along its course. The most common place for this to occur is the lower part of the spine where the nerve roots of the sciatic nerve are compressed by a prolapsed (slipped) disc. Pinching of the nerve due to a Disc prolapse is the most common cause. Other medical conditions including trauma to the spine, spinal tumors, and spondylolisthesis (slipping of one vertebra over the other) and lumbar vertebral canal stenosis can cause sciatica.
Homeopathy as a natural system of medicine offers distinct advantages to the people who suffer from sciatica. What is Slipped Disk or Disk Prolapse ?
Pain in the back due a ’slipped disc?’ (also referred as herniated disc) can be very agonizing and can effects ones life in many ways. It can effect even the normal essential movements like sitting standing and walking; causing sharp shooting pains in the area of the affected disk. In severe cases relentless pain can occur even with simple movements causing one to lie down in one position for hours and days at a time. Homoeopathic treatment can be very effective in both the acute and chronic cases of slipped disk problem. It can even be a big boon for the patients as it can save advanced cases from the surgeon?s knife.
What exactly is slipped disc and how can it cause such pain? Our spine comprises of mainly the bones (vertebrae), the disks and the spinal cord .Bones (vertebrae) are stacked one on top of each other to form the backbone. Through these vertebrae passes the spinal cord .Discs are a kind of cushions that are positioned between two vertebrae. They act as shock absorber in the spine. These disks are round and flat in shape and are made up of tough outer covering which surrounds a jelly like material called nucleus.
Although the slipping of the disc can be triggered due to a trauma like over stretching or lifting weight etc. It is difficult to pinpoint one single cause for this kind of disc problem. This problem often occurs out of gradual degeneration of the disk and is related to the aging process. Gradually over a period of time, as we age, the discs loose their water content and both the outer shell as well as the inner nucleus becomes stiffer and brittle. As the discs wear out, their outer covering becomes more prone to getting torn. It is when the outer covering of the discs that get torn and the nucleus moves out to irritate the nerve passing by, that the pain occurs. The pain can occur in back, hips or even legs. This is called as slipped disk.
Although the slipped disk can occur anywhere in the backbone, the lumbar are (lower back area) is more prone for this kind of disk problem.
Homoeopathic treatment of slipped disc is usually based on the symptoms that are presented in an individual case. For example In an individual with ?slipped disc? where the pain is traveling down to the leg, the homoeopathic medicine prescribed will be different from an individual who has pain just confined to the back only.
Acute cases need to be treated differently with different set of homoeopathic medicines like Rhus tox, Arnica, Ruta, Hypericum, Variolinum, Agaricus and Bryonia. Further, after the acute attack has subsided, the constitutional remedies may be required to strengthen the patients overall health, thus reducing the risk of another herniated disk.

I am 62 years old and suffering from problem of the sensitiveness of the various locations in my lower leg. It is not the joint only. It may anywhere from my heel to hips. When I sit or lay down and then I have to stand up, initially it is really painful to put my foot and weight on ground. I regularly go for a walk but sometimes it is difficult to walk properly. I have chronic back pain. My M.R.I. report revealed that my lower disc is bulged out. I can’t stand or walk more than 1 hour or so. I’ve had physical therapy sessions, but they haven’t helped much. I feel better only when I rest for long period of time. Could you please suggest me something?

I have under gone ozonucleolysis treatment for the cervic slipped disc at C5-C6 level which shows a large paracentral and lateral herniation causing foraminal stenosis compressing the exiting nerve roots. Mild indentation of the cord seen. Doctor is there any procedure which can shrink the herniated disc what could be the time period for the herniated disc to set at its original place Further what are the precautions to be taken by me in future so as to avoid further injury and pain. what are the exercises to be followed making the neck muscles strong so that the prolapsed disc does not cause problems in future. Sir, I am 45 old, suffering from sciatica pain for the past 5 months. The pain is exactly just above the right leg thy joint and shooting upto the foot. If I stand 20-30 minites at one place, the pain is aggravating.If I keep moving, not much pain. So far I have not started any medicine. It all began with numbness in the thigh area of sometimes the right and sometimes the left thigh. Some activity and the numbness was gone.
Now I have sciatica I gather with the pain begining at the right knee and thereafter running through the thigh to the back of buttocks and also the lower leg of the right leg. Often times lets you feel so much pain that you become imobile though sitting makes it disappear.
If I bend to touch my toes there is relief. What is this if not sciatica.

dear Dr. I have requested for your advise with regard to one of my cousins spinal cord injury two months ago. but no reply.
doctor, since the last one month, i am having very acute back pain in the lower region of my back due to which i had difficulty in sleeping and walking. I am suffering from Lumbar Spondylosis
My physical problem through report of MRI Scan:
Herniated Lumbar Disc at L3 - L4 & L4 - L5 with mild diffuse posterior bulges and bilateral mild inferior root canal; narrowing at L4 - L5.
Symptoms:
i) Aching at the waist
ii) Severe pain in Left Hip joint when walking (this symptom occurrs with a frequency of around 20%)
iii)Tingling sensation in left foot.
At the time of Acute attack, I was not able to turn in bed.

I work in automotive company as operator and use right turn of my right foot more than 400 times in 8 hours a day i.e. 90 degree to pass part from my machine to next machine.
I have developed pain on hip joint. I am 65 years. My wife died due to hip joint pain before and after late operation as Toronto govt. facility wait for 2/3 years for operation theatre, as 3 fold increase in operation of hip and knee.

And MRI L-S spine reveals :-
- Diffuse disc bulge with posterocentral tear with extrusion and cauda migration at L5-S1, causing compression over cauda equina nerve roots and narrowing of bilateral neural foramina with compression over exciting nerves.
- diffuse disc bulge with posterocentral annular tear at L4-L5 level, causing compression over thecal sac and narrowing of bilateral lateral recess and lower segmant of neural foramina without any compression over exciting nerve roots.
Doctors are advicing for operation…however is there any possible treatement/medicine which can remove it permanently without being operated ??? kindly suggest regarding the same…
