What is disc bulge?
Disc or more appropriately intervertebral disc refers to the pad of fibro cartilage lying between vertebras. Vertebras are bone in the back stacked one above the other, 33 of them in all. Each intervertebral disc lies between two vertebrae or in other words, separates two vertebrae. There are 23 intervertebral discs in total. These cartilaginous pads act as shock absorbers whenever excessive stress or strain is put on the spine. An intervertebral disc has two parts – thick outer fibrous ring called annulus fibrosus and inner gel-like material called nucleous pulposus. Disc bulge refers to bulging out of the intact disc from its normal space. Although disc bulge can arise in any part of the spine, it is most common in the lumbar and cervical spine. A person may have single or multiple disc bulges at varying levels in the spine.
Can Homeopathy treat disc bulge?
Disc bulge can be treated with excellence under the Homeopathic mode of treatment. Mild to moderate cases of disc bulge have a good chance of complete recovery with Homeopathic medicines. In severe cases of disc bulge, symptomatic relief can be expected with Homeopathic medicines. In such cases, symptoms of back pain, tingling, numbness and weakness in limbs can all be managed successfully. Among the most well indicated Homeopathic medicines for disc bulge, the major ones are – Rhus Tox, Hypericum Perforatum, Colocynthis, Magnesium Phos and Paris Quadrifolia.
What causes disc bulge?
Various factors can cause a disc bulge. The first among them is age. With advancing age, the discs start to lose their elasticity and lubricating fluid and become brittle, making them bulge out. Injury to the spine can also cause a disc to bulge as also repetitive bending of the back. Lifting heavy weights is another major risk factor. Being overweight also puts a person at a higher risk of disc bulge.
How do I know I have cervical disc bulge?
The first visible symptom of a cervical disc bulge is pain in the neck. The pain may travel to the shoulders, arms and down to the hands and fingers. When a disc bulge pinches upon a nerve, it leads to numbness, tingling, formication in the upper limbs. Weakness of upper limbs may also be present.
What are the symptoms of lumbar disc bulge?
A person having lumbar disc bulge may not experience any symptom at all. Where symptoms do show up in lumbar disc bulge, the first among them would be pain in the lower back. The next symptom that is likely to arise from a lumbar disc bulge from nerve pinching is pain in the lower back that radiates down the lower limbs. The pain radiating from lower back to the lower limbs is termed as sciatica. Sciatica can be right or left sided. Numbness, tingling, weakness of the lower limbs are yet other accompanying symptoms.
What does disc bulge diagnosis involve?
Investigation to confirm disc bulge includes MRI of the back. It will reveal the exact location of the disc bulge and the nerves that are affected.
Does a disc bulge always cause pain?
No, it is not mandatory for all disc bulge cases to feel pain. Many persons have disc bulge without even knowing that they do as they never experience any symptoms.
Is disc bulge the same as disc herniation?
No, disc bulge and disc herniation are not the same. Disc bulge simply refers to bulging out of the intact disc from its normal space. In disc herniation, there is a crack in the outer fibrous layer of disc that makes the gel-like material inside the inter vertebral disc ooze out.
Which part of the spine is most likely to suffer a disc bulge?
Although disc bulge can arise in any part of spine, it is most common in the lumbar and cervical spine.
I have numbness, tingling in hands. Could it be due to cervical disc bulge?
Yes, cervical disc bulge can cause numbness and tingling in hands. These symptoms arise due to pinching of the nerve from disc bulge in the cervical region. However, similar symptoms may arise due to other medical conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and peripheral neuropathy as well. Further investigation would be required to confirm disc bulge.
I have had lower back pain for a few months. Should it be investigated for disc bulge?
Disc bulge is one of the major causes leading to lower back pain. However, it is not the only cause of lower back pain. It can arise due to several other reasons including degeneration of the disc, muscle sprain, muscle spasm in the back, osteoarthritis, spondylolisthesis and osteoporosis.
I have been advised surgery for lumbar disc bulge. Can it be avoided with Homeopathic medicines?
Yes, Homeopathic medicines offer great alternative to surgery in treating lumbar disc bulge. Mild, moderate disc bulge cases show complete recovery with Homeopathic medicines. Severe disc bulge cases, too, can be symptomatically managed with Homeopathic mode of treatment.
Can Homeopathic medicines completely cure disc bulge?
Yes, disc bulge can be cured with Homeopathic medicines. However, the results vary as per the severity and intensity of the case. Depending upon the severity of the case, either complete cure is possible or Homeopathic medicines can provide symptomatic relief from disc bulge.

Dear Sir
I am 31 yr old, I faced back pain problem since Oct-2013.
MRI Report says : MR findings are suggestive of lumbar spondylosis , degenerative disc disease, disc bulge at L4-L5 level and mild posterocentral protrusion at L5-S1 level minimally compressing bilateral exiting nerve root.
Please help me to get some remedy for the problem.

Dr. Sharma,
I was in a car accident in oct of 2010, and I was diagnsed with fibromyalgia, due to no curve in my neck and also because I have a herniated disc…..The longer since the car accident the more severe it got. My doctor put me on lyrica in Sept of 2011 since then I have gained 30 pounds, which i was always at 175 since before my daughter and I am 5’3, yes I know that means I need to lose some, but my back problems were never that bad until my car accident and then one day last year I couldnt put any weight on my right leg and sometimes even my left. I have been out of work now for a year , and I cant walk for more 20-30 mintues without causing radiating pain down both legs and i have tried facet injections, trigger points and spinal blocks, now they are talking about burning the nerves in my back and I am wiling to lose weight and workout if I can walk or stand for more than 20 minutes without having radiating pain down my legs…I just recently found my records and this was thier findingsComparison: none
Findings: Regarding alignment, the lumbar spine alignment appears
preserved. There is no significant disc space narrowing at any level.
4 mm sclerotic focus in a left aspect of S1 vertebral body, likely
bone island. Findings on a level by level basis are as follows:
L1-L2: No focal abnormality.
CT LUMBAR SPINE W/O CONTRAST (CT LUMBAR SPINE WITHOUT CONTRAST) (08/29/2011 7:40 AM CDT)
Impressions
L2-L3: No focal abnormality.
L3-L4: No focal abnormality.
L4-L5: Mild broad-based disc bulge. No significant spinal canal
narrowing. No significant neural foraminal narrowing.
L5-S1: Posterior broad-based disc bulge which abuts bilateral S1 nerve
roots without definite impingement. No significant spinal canal
narrowing.
The visualized adjacent paraspinous tissues are grossly within normal
limits.
Impression:
1. No acute osseous abnormality of lumbar spine.
2. Posterior broad-based disc bulge at L4-5 which abuts bilateral S1
nerve roots without definite impingement.
I since have had an emg not showing any nerve impingment, but yet I am still in a ton of pain I am only 32, and before my accident in 2010 I was an active single mom losing weight and keeping up with my speical needs daughter where as now I am in bed most days, and in pain most days, also I have suffered from depression since I was a teenager, aupnd these restrictions and pain have made my depression worse. I have been taking a vitamin D supplement, and fish oil and b12 supplement along with pain medication and anti depressants. I am really nervous about this buring procdeure is there anything else I can do, my depression is getting better since I started on the vitamin D, I want to go back to being an active mom but I cant without getting rid of this pain. I have done physical therapy. I have done all the injections and shots one can think of and I know if I can stop getting so much pain in my legs I can lose the weight and probably start working again. What can you suggest?
Dear Sir,
I have been suffering of slipped disc for about 2 years..Nowadays i get pain more than thrice a year & leading me to bedridden. The pain persisting for a month & leaves me when i get complete bed rest. Pain travelling down to the leg and i couldnt able to step a walk. I undergone MRI Scan, the report says relatively narrow canal at L2 to L4 level & Mild Bulge of L5 – S1 Disc. This report scares me a lot. Iam only 32 years & having a little kid. It should not take me to surgery. Iam scared to go for surgery as the result will not be positive. Kindly advise me how to struggle with my disease & let me know permanent remedy..Thanks
Sir,
My wife had been suffering from Spondylosis from 2006 onwards and we consulted a neuro and he advised some medicines. But later we consulted with a Homaeo Doctor and took medicines for 3 years. But now she has got pain on the left shoulder, left hand . We consulted a neuro surgeon again and as per the MRI report, they have the following impression:
1. Cervico-thoraco-lumbar Spondylosis
2. Posterior central disc bulge at C3-C4, C4-C5, C5-C6 and C6-C7 indenting the thecal sac.
3. Mild spinal anal stenosis from C4-C6 level
4. Mild central disc protrusion at L3-L4, L4-L5 and L5-SI indenting the thecal sac.
5. Poserior dis bulge T2-T3, T4-T5, T5-T6, T6-T7,T7-T8,T8-T9 and T9-T10 indenting thecal sac.
She cannot sit for long, if so she feel pain on the left side of shoulder and connected back side. Sometimes she feels numbness on the left hand while sitting. Now she is taking full rest. Previously, she used to sit for hours to teach violin class. Now she has stopped it. Now she is taking medicines prescribed by the Doctor, but there is some improvement in the pain but not fuly cured. Kindly suggest which medicines she has to take in Homaeo if there is effective treatment in this branch. Please advise.
