Homeopathic Remedies For Alopecia Areata

Having bald patches on one’s head, beard and eyebrows can be very distressing. Although it does not affect the patient’s health in any other form, it is certainly life-altering as its sudden onset, recurrent episodes, and unpredictable course have an adverse impact on the psyche of those suffering from it. Alopecia areata refers to the loss of hair in patches, usually on the scalp, but any other body part covered with hair can also be affected. When alopecia areata appears in the beard, it is known as alopecia areata barbae. Alopecia affects all ages, races, and sexes equally. Homeopathic remedies for alopecia areata provide an excellent treatment for it. They are fairly successful as it helps the hair grow back.

Top 5 Homeopathic Medicines For Alopecia Areata

The five top-ranking homeopathic medicines that treat Alopecia Areata effectively are Fluoric Acid, Phosphorus, Lycopodium, Calcarea carb and Vinca Minor.

1. Fluoric Acid – Top-Grade Homeopathic Medicine

Fluoric Acid is one of the best homeopathic remedies for alopecia areata. It works equally well for hair fall in patches occurring in any part of the scalp. It helps wonderfully in the regrowth of hair in bald patches. Those needing it may have an itchy scalp too. The scalp can be sensitive to touch.

When and How to use fluoric Acid?

This medicine can be used as the first line of treatment in cases of alopecia areata. With its use, there is gradual regrowth of hair. Initially, Fluoric Acid 30C can be used two to three times a day. Once the hair starts to regrow, the dose should be reduced.

2. Phosphorus – For Alopecia Areata With Hair Loss From Front Or Sides Of Scalp

Though Phosphorus can be used for hair loss in any portion of the scalp, it is most suitable when hair loss from the front or the sides is prominent. Those needing it can have a tendency of excessive sweating on the scalp. Heat may also be felt in the scalp, dandruff may also be present.

When and How to use Phosphorus?

Use of Phosphorus is mainly suggested when hair loss occurs especially from the front or side portion of the scalp. Though it can be taken in any potency from low to high but the most frequently recommended is 30C potency. Phosphorus 30C can be taken twice a day for good results.

3. Lycopodium – For Alopecia Areata When Hair Loss Is Marked On Top Of Scalp (Vertex)

Lycopodium is a natural remedy sourced from plant club moss. It works well in recovering from bald patches that occur mainly on the top of the scalp. The person suffers burning sensation and itching on the scalp. Apart from this, Lycopodium is a leading medicine to treat premature greying of hair.

When and How to use Lycopodium?

When hair loss is marked on the top of the scalp, this medicine can be considered. Among its various potencies ranging from low to high, it is best to start with 30C potency twice a day. Its higher potencies can be considered afterward but only after consulting a homeopathic physician.

4. Calcarea Carb – For Hair Loss With Sweaty Scalp

This medicine can be used in cases where patchy hair loss is accompanied by increased sweating on the scalp. A cold sensation on the scalp can also be felt. Scalp can be itchy as well.

When and How to use Calcarea Carb?

It is recommended for persons who have hair loss in spots along with a tendency of increased sweating. It is used in different potencies ranging from low to high depending on the complaint but the most common in use is 30C potency. Lycopodium 30C can be taken once in the morning and once in the evening for best results.

5. Vinca Minor – For Tendency To Alopecia Areata When Regrown Hair Are White

This medicine is prepared from the plant ‘lesser periwinkle’. It is useful in treating alopecia areata cases where there is a tendency for hair to fall in spots which then get replaced by white hair. Along with this, itching and violent scratching over the scalp may also be present.

When and How to use Vinca Minor?

This medicine is specifically used in cases in which there is a tendency for hair loss in spots and when the hair which regrow are white-colored. This medicine can be taken in 30C potency twice a day. It works two ways — in treating tendency to have hair loss in spots, and preventing whitening of hair that grow back.

What Are The Signs And Symptoms?

Alopecia areata shows up as bald (hair loss) patches. The loss of hair occurs in circular or oval patches from the scalp or elsewhere such as eyebrows, beard, etc. The bald patches are usually of the size of a five-rupee coin or one-rupee coin and are smooth to touch. Complete loss of hair may also occur in some individuals although it is not very common.

The most common areas for alopecia areata are the scalp and the beard, but may involve any body part with hair. There may be one, or multiple bald patches.  Few people complain of itching when hair starts falling. There is no physical discomfort associated with it.

Other than typical circular or oval shape patches of alopecia areata, there are some rare types of alopecia areata:

Alopecia areata totalis –  Loss of hair from entire scalp

Alopecia areata universalis – Loss of hair from full body occur

Ophiasis alopecia areata – Band-like hair loss on the temporal area (sides) and occiput area (back of head)

Diffuse alopecia areata – Hair loss starts abruptly instead of patchy hair loss

Causes, risk factors and trigger factors

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease (the body’s defense cells start destroying body’s own healthy tissues out of a misdirected response). In alopecia areata, the defense cells start destroying hair follicles resulting in bald patches. The immune cells attack the hair follicle matrix of some of the hair that are in growth phase. Following this, these strands of hair prematurely (before their complete formation and maturation) pass into a phase where hair stops growing. The hair follicle stem cells are not damaged so the ability of the hair follicles to regenerate is not affected at all. Why? Immune cells target hair follicles here is still unknown. However, it is thought that heredity and genetics play a significant role in alopecia areata. Patients suffering from alopecia areata very often mention a family member suffering from the same condition. It is estimated that one in five persons suffering from alopecia areata has someone in the family who has the same problem. As per research, persons having alopecia areata might also have a history of some other autoimmune disease (for example, vitiligo  – white patches on skin due to lack of melanin pigment; thyroiditis  – inflammation of thyroid gland) or some other family member might be suffering from some autoimmune disease. Some factors viral infections, vaccines and physical stress can trigger alopecia areata.

Homeopathic Treatment Of Alopecia Areata

Homeopathy is an advanced science and treats many diseases of autoimmune origin including alopecia areata. Homeopathic treatment for alopecia areata helps by optimizing the overactive immune system that is destroying the hair follicles. Homeopathic medicines stop the size of the bald spots from enlarging and help in the regrowth of hair. Thus, homeopathy can provide an effective and permanent solution to this problem. Moreover, once alopecia areata is treated with homeopathy, the chances of the problem reoccurring are greatly reduced.

How common is alopecia areata and does it cause permanent hair loss?

Alopecia areata is a fairly common condition and about one percent of the population is affected at any given time. The hair loss in alopecia areata is not permanent. Alopecia areata is a reversible hair loss as the follicles (a structure that encloses the root of the hair) of hair are not damaged.

My daughter started losing hair after gardasil vaccine. She also ended up with endometriosis which i believe was due to 3 series vaccine. It has been 7 years later and she has to shave her head because of it starts to grow, it itches and then starts falling again. I think it is auto immune. What do you recommend?

    Dear Dr Sharma,
I am writing for the treatment of grandson of my sister who is now based in the USA and is only 20 yrs old. He has been suffering from Alopecia Areata for the last 2-3 years. The hair initially disappeared on the eye brows. now the hair are disappearing on the head, and other parts of the body. We had consulted some renowned dermatologists in Delhi which gave temporary relief; some injections of cortezone were also given with temporary relief. No permanent solution has been found. The condition is worsening day bt day. These days on the advice of some nutiritionist he is on a bland diet.
When he comes next to India (maybe during in December 2017) we would like to consult you personally. Where are you based in Delhi? In the meantime, could you please advice which homeo medicine be taken until he comes to Delhi? YOUR ADVICE WILL BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED

Hi Dr Sharma, I am writing to ask for your help with alleviating some of my ongoing issues with what I believe to be alopecia areata. I am 36 years old and have been suffering from this for about the last 13 years. I was diagnosed in 2003 by a dermatologist. It seems to only affect my eyebrows as I have eyelashes and hair on other parts of my body pretty consistently. It has been a slow gradual process that has been worse at sometimes than others. I don’t seem to get any regrowth it seems. Lately I have been going through a rough patch with the amount of hair loss and I think I might associate it with stress of worrying about this disorder itself. As well as other daily life problems. But the disorder can tear me down emotionally at times. I seem to worry about this all the time and know I would be a much happier person if this homeopathic medicine approach would work for me. I tried back a dozen years ago going to a homeopathic dr and tried some homeopathic Medline. I didn’t work because I didn’t stick with it. I only did it for a month and now I have read that any improvement would take many months, upward of a year. I was too young to do this then. Now i am very open minded in doing what it takes to make this homeopathic approach work if you can help me. Mike

  11. Christopher Thomas says:

hello, I was diagnosed with alopecia areata . I have been going for cortisone injections every 4 to 6 weeks.
    with moderate success. I have lost a lot of my hair. and although the hair loss has reduced significantly;
I still seem to be losing it in certain areas. without the form of new patches. as if it is somewhat diffuse.
I have changed my diet . I eat mostly vegetables and organic food. I take a biotin supplement once a day.
also a multivitiamin. I had a really stressful year. I had an injury on my hand . I went into a panic attack because of the loss of blood. also I lost my grandmother soon after that. it wasn’t until these things happened that the hair loss began. it began almost immediately after the injury and the loss of my grandmother. the dermatologist says he is unsure if stress is a factor. But, I have my second thoughts about it. considering I am 24 years old and have never had it once in my life. I am willing to try anything to get this under control . any advice or help you could give would be much appreciated. thank you very much.

  15. Katerina Galani says:

    Dear Dr. Sharma,

First I want to thank you for helping people.
It is so great and rare in our time, in our world.

I would like to tell you my story, as quick as I can describe it, because I surely know that you are a very busy man.

I have Alopecia Areata. It starts when I was 16. I got Alopecia Universalis to be concrete and I have had it for many years, more than 10 to be more precise. About 12 years for sure. After that I went to a homeopath and within 2 years he successfully helped me to regain my body and scalp hair and the hair was ok about many years like approximately 8 years. After this period I had family troubles, a very stressfull period and by mistake I also drank a tea (mate tea) which as I informed myself and my homeopath at this time was worse than coffee concering the caffeine amount (I drank it almost a month).

So a bald spot on the one side did appear which was at the beginning 1 cm and later about 8 cm and even a bit larger. My homeopath did not manage to balance the situation and he was anyway the last time money oriented, he just talked about patients bothering him and not coming to his office, although I really did never understand why he talked so much about it, because I always paid him although the last years I was unemployed though to the bad situation here in Greece.

So after 3 Years of no success with my old doctor (whom I was grateful for the most time of our therapy, that made me so happy and changed my life) I decided to change my doctor and try another homeopath because the problem did not even remain stable, it got worse in these 3 years with the old doctor.

At this point, I would like to notice, that I am a Phosphorus as both doctors (old one and new one) find out and that I am 42 years old (female).

So the new doctor gave me 5 months ago Siphilinum (just two pills), Cali Muriaticum, and then after a while (I think 2-3 Months) Phosphorus 200CH, 1M, 10M in an interval of 15 days.

The affect was that I got more spots above (some closes, some not), some long hairs fall out and new onea comes out and some bald patches are still bald and the old one remains I think the same. The back hairs and almost all hairs of the one side are still ok, but the front of the scalp is really dramatic. I thought it is an aggravation and I told her but she had another opinion and game me now a even higher dose of 50M Phosphorus.

I have to admit that although things are getting worse, my psychology is better some how. Not always, but some how. There are just 10 days ago that I took the 50M Phosphorus.

I wrote to you, because I came to this site by googling something about aggravation and I also remembered you from a nice You Tube video.

Do you maybe have a tip for me? For my situation?

Thank you for your time and for listening to me and I wish you a nice week.

    Katerina
