Some causes of dyspareunia include vaginal dryness, insufficient lubrication, skin disorders of the genital area (like eczema, lichen planus), vaginal infections, PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) and vaginismus (involuntary spasms of the muscles of the vaginal walls leading to temporary narrowing of the vagina). Pelvic disease like endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and uterine fibroids are some other reasons for dyspareunia. An injury/trauma to the genitals can also lead to painful intercourse. Congenital abnormality also leads to painful intercourse (eg., in case of vaginal agenesis where the vagina is not fully formed and imperforate hymen). Apart from the above, certain psychological issues are other contributing factors behind painful coition. These include stress, anxiety, depression and a history of mental trauma including sexual or emotional abuse. Women may also complain of dyspareunia during menopause and after childbirth.
