Top 6 Natural Medicines for Knee Injuries

The knee joint is quite vulnerable to injuries. A knee injury can arise from a fall, overuse, a misstep, a sudden twist, etc. Athletes who play sports like soccer, football, and basketball are at risk of knee injuries. The knee joint is made up of four main components, i.e. bones (three bones, including femur, tibia, and patella participate here), C-shaped tough, rubbery cartilage (medial and lateral menisci that act as shock absorbers between femur and tibia), ligaments (collateral and cruciate ligaments that join bones together), and tendons (that connect muscles to the bones). An injury can occur to any of these components.

Homeopathy carries an excellent scope to manage cases of knee injuries. Knee injuries of various kinds can be treated with homeopathy. Homeopathic medicines for knee injuries help reduce the pain and swelling of the knee in case of injury and promote efficient healing. Homeopathy is recommended for treating minor knee injuries having mild to moderate intensity. But in cases of major and severe injuries like extended ligament tears, these medicines have a limited role to play. In such cases, these medicines can be used in conjunction with conventional help for symptomatic relief.

There are many highly effective homeopathic medicines to manage injuries related to tendons, ligaments, muscles, bones, and joints. These medicines are recommended for both acute (recent) and older cases of knee injuries. Homeopathy proves effective in both types of cases. The results vary from case to case as per the type of injury. Homeopathic medicines, along with symptom relief, also aid healing at the injured site.

Homeopathic medicines promote natural healing in cases of knee injuries. These medicines tend to boost the body’s natural healing mechanism. Once the self-restorative forces in the body are boosted, self-healing in the injured area begins, and gradually self-recovery happens along with symptomatic relief. To what extent homeopathy can help varies from case to case as per the nature and severity of the injury. One should follow a homeopathic doctor’s advice regarding proper homeopathic prescription in cases of knee injuries. To get the best results, a complete course of treatment for the time duration as guided by your physician needs to be followed.

It is a well-known fact that homeopathy is a natural healing science. It uses herbal medicines to treat health problems, including injuries. This makes them very safe to use with zero side effects. They never cause any harmful reaction.

Some common types of knee injuries

The injuries that are common to the knee include – fracture, ligament tear, dislocation, meniscal tear, tendon tear, sprains and patellar tendonitis.

Fracture – It refers to break in the bone either partial or complete. In case of the knee, it mainly affects the patella also called kneecap. It usually happens from a fall or an accident.

Ligament injuries – First among these is anterior cruciate ligament injury. This ligament is present in front of  the knee. Its injuries commonly result from sports activities like playing football and soccer. Second is the posterior ligament injury. This ligament is present at the back of the knee. This ligament is usually injured from a high impact on front of the knee when knee gets bent as from a hard fall on bent knee or road accident, or injury while playing a certain sport. The third ligament injury is collateral ligament injury. These ligaments are located on the sides of the knee. This ligament usually gets injured from some hard impact on the sides of the knees.

Dislocation – Dislocation of knee results when the bones of the knee are partially or completely forced out of their place. This may occur from falling, motor vehicle accidents, or sports injuries.

Meniscal tear – Meniscus tear may occur suddenly from sports injuries or it may occur gradually as a part of ageing or arthritis.

Tendon tear – The tendon tear mainly affects quadriceps and patellar tendons when it comes to knee tendon tear. This may occur from a fall or an impact from being hit by something or in professional players.

Knee Sprain – It results from overstretching of one or more ligaments of the knee. This may occur from falling on the knee or being hit on the knee by something heavy.

Patellar tendonitis – This refers to injury to the tendon that joins the kneecap to the shinbone (tibia). This injury is also called jumper’s knee.

    Hello Dr Sharma,
I am 77 yrs old. Last year, while getting up from Vajarasan position, there was horizontal tear of body and posterior horn of medial meniscus.
On advice of orthopedic surgeon, I am doing some strengthening exercises for quadriceps and calf muscles and taking calcium. However, the pain is still persisting. Could you please recommend some homeopathic treatment.

  5. Hello Dr. Sharma

I am a 72 year old man, and have a tear in my right medial meniscus that has produced a baker’s cyst, which became painful and problematic for me about 2 ½ months ago. With rest, and a paleo, anti-inflammatory diet, the swelling reduced, the pain disappeared and I was able to walk again. (I also lost 22lbs) It flared up again about 2 weeks ago and I was referred for an MRI that has revealed the tear and Osteoarthritis. There is no pain now, and only slight swelling. The knee feels incredibly weak when walking up stairs. I can walk fairly well with a cane, but not for long periods of time. I am not particularly fit, although not ready for the grave just yet. The Doctor has suggested that surgery is the only option and that the meniscus is unable to heal itself, so the condition will only get worse without surgery. Is there any homeopathic treatment that will assist?

I have a slight torn miniscus on inside of left knee. Hurts when going up hill or standing. Pain radiates to pinky and 4th toe and ankle. Don’t want to have surgery. Any help is appreciated

    • Get a good knee brace, or sleeve, one with copper and NOT having neoprene, which has carcinogens!!! to hold it in place.
ELEVATE (pillows under it) and keep as immobile as possible.
For meniscus, I would do 200c of ruta and ledum. If it’s “it only hurts when I move”…add 200c of Bryonia. Rhus tox, also 200 c. 3-5 pellets of each under the tongue, let dissolve. I separate thru the day, but they are all compatible and can be taken together.
Nothing but water in mouth 15 minutes before and after. Drink lots of water to lubricate joints. Ensuring you have to get up to pee, so there’s the needed mobility!
PEppermint interferes so switch to Homeodent toothpaste for the duration.
IF you can, try to get in some traditional PT.
Definitely use massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic.
And did you get an x-ray to confirm sprain, not tear?
I’ve been studying and using homeopathy since 2000, but could never afford the money for certification.

  18. Donna Little says:

Hello, Dr. Sharma. I was recently diagnosed with a lateral tear in the meniscus of my right knee as well as cartilage damage. What homeopathic remedy would you suggest for this? I have an evaluation scheduled with an orthopedist later this month, but would like to start healing it before this appointment. I will NOT allow them to inject any kind of cortisone or steroid and praying I won’t need surgery.

    Blessing!
    Donna Little
