Gastritis is the inflammation of the stomach lining or the mucosa. The stomach is a hollow muscular organ located in the upper left quadrant of the abdomen. It is a part of the digestive system. The top part of the stomach is connected to the esophagus, and the lower part is attached to the duodenum. The stomach wall is lined with several layers of different tissues. The layers – from the exterior to the interior – are serosa, muscularis externa, sub mucosa and mucosa.
Serosa is the outermost layer of the epithelial and connective tissue that is a part of the peritoneum. The next layer, or the muscularis externa, helps in churning, mixing the food, and propelling it towards the intestines by contracting and relaxing. The sub mucosa layer contains the blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerves. The inner most layer or the mucosa is a soft, smooth surfaced layer that contains gastric glands and gastric pits. The gastric glands have various cells that produce mucus, an enzyme named pepsinogen, hydrochloric acid and the gastric intrinsic factor which helps in absorbing vitamin B12. The mucus protects the stomach tissue from being eaten away, damaged, or corroded by its digestive secretions. The hydrochloric acid kills micro organisms swallowed along with food and activates pepsinogen into pepsin to help in digesting proteins.
Any factor that disrupts the protective mucus barrier of the stomach exposes the stomach tissue to harm by the strongly acidic stomach secretions. This results in the inflammation of the stomach lining or the mucosa and is called gastritis. Gastritis may be acute or short term and chronic or long term in nature. It can also be nonerosive or erosive. In nonerosive gastritis, only the stomach lining is inflamed. In erosive gastritis, the mucus lining erodes, which leads to breaks, sores or ulcers in the stomach lining. Another form of gastritis is atrophic gastritis in which the gastric gland cells are destroyed due to long term inflammation and replaced by intestinal and fibrous tissue. This leads to the impairment of the production of hydrochloric acid, pepsin, and gastric intrinsic factor. Atrophic gastritis is either the result of long term Helicobacter pylori infection or is autoimmune in origin.

Hi I’ve had gastritis for over 3 years now. I tried almost every herbal supplement, prescription medication, and natural supplement out there. I really want to try out homeopathic medicine I’m really getting desperate as my symptoms are only getting worse. I can barely sleep at night because the bloating, has, indigestion and stomach pain is so bad. I have pain when I’m hungry the. getbloated after I eat. My diesease termed as “Chronic Gastritis associated with H Pylori” by Gastronterologist of Columbia Asia in Bangalore after Endoscopy and Colonoscopy in the year 2016.
But despite having medicines i did not recover till date.

Dr. Sharma, I have been suffering with gastritis for 5 months, and am having attacks about 2 to 3 times a week on a bad week. The attacks start with nausea then stomach pain generally 4 hours after eating and will not ease until I have vomited repeatedly. I then feel drained, but better. I have given up coffee, sodas, spicy, greasy, beef, pork, gluten, wheat and dairy. Can’t tolerate yogurt. I’m basically down to chicken, potatoes, rice and chicken broth and gluten free, wheat free bread. But even then, I’m still having attacks and then having to go on a liquid diet for a day or so before I can tolerate any solid food. I’m drinking only anti inflammatory green tea with honey, apple juice and Evian water. Before this current period, I first began to have attacks after taking 200mg of Celebrex daily for ten months for back pain. These attacks were severe, but only occurring every couple of months. I also have had numerous autoimmune symptoms such as chronic fatigue, RA symptoms, severe seasonal allergies, a rash that will not go away, etc. but don’t test positive for Lupus, etc on any blood tests. I started a gluten free diet that cleared up most of these symptoms, but then the gastritis started. I was diagnosed with PMLE at 19. I am now 54. I currently do not have medical insurance and don’t know what to do. I took two separate courses of PPI’s, but the gastritis returned immediately after completing.
