Types

There are three common types as per its location on different regions of the tooth.
1. Periapical Abscess – It refers to abscess that forms at the tip of the root of the tooth.
2. Periodontal Abscess – it refers to an abscess that develops in the gums at the side of the root of the tooth. It carries a chance of spreading to the surrounding tissue and bone.
3. Gingival Abscess – This type of abscess forms on the gums.

Causes

It results from bacterial infection that enters teeth or gums.

A periapical tooth abscess develops due to bacteria entering the dental pulp (inner part of teeth that comprises nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue). The bacteria can enter through a dental cavity /tooth decay, an injury, crack in tooth or after dental work.

Periodontal abscess results from gum disease (an inflammation of the tissues surrounding the teeth) or from an injury.

Additionally, the gingival abscess forms when a foreign body like a toothpick splinter, a bristle of toothbrush lodges in the gums.

Persons who don’t maintain proper dental hygiene are at risk.

Taking a high sugar diet and dryness of mouth are also risk factors for tooth abscess.

Complications

If it is not properly treated in time, it can lead to some complications. In such cases infection can spread to the jaw, face, head or neck. Rarely infection can spread to the heart or brain or can result in sepsis, which means infection throughout the body which is a life-threatening condition. It is advisable to take urgent medical help if there is high fever, difficulty in swallowing, swelling on the face, severe headache, double vision, confusion, difficulty in breathing or rapid heart rate as these are indicative of a serious infection.

  1. Please include most common POTENCIES used. This information would be very helpful. You have listed potencies in some, but not all, of your articles. The ones which list potencies help the best.

  2. Cynthia K. says:

I have been diagnosed with an abscess tooth by my dentist. She said that I would need a root canal. I’ve heard that root canals are very bad, so I’ve been treating it with colloidal silver, but it only took me so far. A doctor recommended using Hapar Sulph, however I am a vegan and it is made from oyster shells. I’ve been looking at your list of other homeopathic remedies. If I stop swishing the colloidal silver, I get swelling. If I continue using it, the swelling goes down and I have a very little dull pain. I don’t know if my abscess is on the gum or root of the tooth. My dentist asked me if I had trauma to the tooth. The tooth looks fine. Can you please advise me on the homeopathic vegan remedy that I can use. Thank you.

Hi, I have a tooth abscess that is between periapical and periodontal. when it was painful and antibiotics was prescribed, I search through the net ( your page among the pages I read) and got Hepar Sulfuris Calcareum. I think it helped! the pain came back in a month and I took it again. 5 TID. the root canal wasn’t compete and has been causing issues. the doctors won’t redo the root canal that was done 18 years ago. so in order to keep my tooth, I decided to keep the abscess asleep! like how it is now! no pain, no obvious inflammation. Do you have any suggestions?

  5. Hello!
If one were to take Silicea for abscess at the tooth root, where a dentist recommended a root canal, what would be the recommended dosage? No signs of external infection. Mild tenderness with direct pressure on affected tooth. No signs of drainage (blood/pus etc). Infection was found via x-ray. De rust prescribed Amoxicillin antibiotics and referred to specialist for root canal. I am 38, female. A crown was put on this tooth 2 years ago following a crack in the tooth from teeth grinding and clenching after a loss of a pet. Thanks in advance.

  6. Hello! I have an abcessed tooth. The xray indicates the tooth is infected. I have read an Xray can not determine whether it is the gum or the tooth. The common remedy is to pull the tooth and have a post, or have a rooth canal. I would like to avoid both options. I would like to keep my tooth. It is a tooth with a cap. I am brushing multiple times a day with MMS (a Jim Humble protocol) and rinsing with peroxide. Can you offer any other solutions not being presented to me via conventional dentists? Thank you. karen
