Enlarged adenoids and tonsils are a concern in young children as they can be a major source of recurrent infections like sore throat, middle ear infections and sinusitis. Mostly they return back to their original size once the infection is over, however in some cases they tend to remain enlarged when infections are frequent or chronic.
Although some amount of enlargement is considered normal in preschool kids but when grossly enlarged, tonsils and adenoids can cause lot of complications. The most common complications are frequent sore throats, chronic ear infections, nose bleed and hearing loss due to obstruction of the Eustachian tube and accumulation of fluid in middle ear. Enlarged adenoids give a typical ‘pinched nose’ quality to the voice. They can also affect the shape of the child’s palate and the teeth. Major fallout of the enlarged adenoids is that the child may have difficulty in breathing during sleep leading to a condition called as Obstructive Sleep Apnea. This is condition in which along with snoring the child goes through brief periods of pauses in breathing during sleep. This can lead to low oxygen levels with daytime sleepiness.
Enlarged adenoids can be easily identified with careful observation. They usually lead to difficulty in breathing, which may eventually become difficult through nose and also become noisy. Children often become mouth-breathers .The voice quality also changes to become ‘pinched nose type’. Snoring during sleep is very important clue for identifying enlarged adenoids in kids. Sleep should be carefully observed for brief pauses in breathing.

He is not gaining any weight since last 1 year it is constant 10.5 Kgs. Height growth is there but very little.
2) He is having very disturbed sleep as he is very frequently waking up and start sleeping in sitting stage.

my son was diagonised with enlarge adenoids and tonsilis
last year . he is 5+.

My 3 years son is normally a sensitive and intelligent child. He is hyperactive but is not able to put his consideration on one thing. From the beginning his appetite is not good. He is physically very weak, his weight now 13 KG only. We are living in Dubai.
From April 2007 he is suffering from cold and flu problem frequently (at least once in two month initially). After few months he started getting ill in a shorter period, in beginning of October 2007 he got chest infection and he was treated by antibiotic and he got well. On December 20, 2007 he got bacterial pneumonia and was hospitalized and treated for 11 days. Otherwise it will effect on his health. Please let us know , if Homepathy has treatment for this problem , how long time will take to cure.

My daughter is suffering from large adenoids and tonsilities. She is 12 years old. Since from birth I tried lots of homeopathy medicines. I did continuous 2 years homeopathy medicine. and I tried bryta carb for one year continuously. when she was taking medicines her cold frequency was low. but for last four years i am not doing any medicines. But her adenoids and tonislites sizes have not decreased. she is having breathing problem. she breaths through her mouth. while sleeping also she keeps hermouth open. and snores. My 13 yr old daughter has been suffering from enlarged adenoids. The adenoids were removed by an ENT specialist at the age of 5. However, they ae enlarged again. she is a mouth breather and has a typical adenoidal face with protruding teeth. She also has recurring problems of cough, cold, wheezing and tonsilitis.

JUst been reading your page on enlarged adnoids. My son has similar symptoms. he snores alot while sleeping espically when he has dariy products especially ice cream. He breaths through his mouth. He doesent seem to get any more infections or colds than most kids. he is quite short for his age, but generally healthy and smart. He seems to not snore much if i keep him off dairy food , he’s even ok when he drinks lactose free milk. Just wondering if he might have enlarged adnoids, or if he is just lactose intolerent, or both?. Is there a way to treat it ?

she does however, has difficulty in breathing through her nose.

She recently had x-rays that confirmed her enlarged adenoids.
She is not able to sleep at night, has bouts of apnea, is not eating well, however she is of average weight and height. Her pulmonologist has decided to try Veramyst which is a nasal spray to try and shrink the adenoids and has also given her Singular for possible allergies.
The other option of course is to surgically remove the adenoids.

I m very much disturbed after knowing my childs problem of adenoids. He has all the symptoms. Very frquent infections, enlarged adenoids, high snoring, mouth open all the time, pauses in breathing, very thirsty, tounge touching the pallete while sleeping except that he hears very well.
My doctor, has suggested operation for removing the adenoids alongwith ear operation as he says that my child hears 30% less. But his growth is very well. he is 4yrs old and very intelligent. Stands first in class, dances very well, plays games on cell phones, uses comp to exciting extent.

My son who is going to be 8 years in next two days is having enlarged adonoids and tonsils.
last year he started pushing his nose upwards as if there was some irritation. Then after few days he started complaining of a pain on both sides of nostrils(inside). we took him to an ENT specialist who told us about the enlarged glands and advised us to go for surgery to remove tonsils and adonoids. my 3 year old,15 Kg., son have enlarged adenoids problem, and I observed snoring when he sleeps in night, and he doesn’t want to take blanket and kicked it most of the times, he has a constant problem with cough, he gets tired quickly, every time he cries, he starts coughing, sometimes he asked me that his ear is paining and when I consult ENT, he says its a cough problem or minor swelling in ear( this thing happens around 2 -3 times in a year), and his voice is sometimes a bit nosy, he breathes with open mouth in night, he doesn’t eat much vegetables in diet, just a PRONTHI, in a meal and he had a frequent problem of fever, around 5-6 times in a year.
He is physically and mentally very normal,
All these things I am noticing from last 1 and a ahalf month and on 22nd Feb’09 I visited to doctor for the same problem and he advised me for X-RAY and give him medicines, Mox (Redimix Syp. thrice a day), (LCZ, syp. at bed time) and (Sal Mucolite), for 5 days and X-RAY report says that he have enlarged adnoids and after seeing the report doctor continues the medicines for another 5 days.
After that I consult my homeopathy doctor for detailed explanation of the problem and he says that in alopathy they almost do surgery and homeopathy treatment is quite successful in enlarged adnoids.
Please guide me over the same, what to do and if I go for homeopathy how much time it will take and how much is the treatment cost(approx)
Please do the needful, I am so worried about my child and also give me the suggestions on precautions have to kept in mind from the immediate effect.

We came to know that my son Vedant is 4 & 1/2 yrs old is suffering from enlarged adenoids. ENT Doctor has advised immediate operation as adenoids are too big and easily visible by naked eye as his ears are getting effected.

Your son has problems with gases he is always bloated. He loves to eat dairy food.

Your son may be lactose intolerant. I used to have that problem (bloating, abdominal pain, gas) whenever I drank milk or had certain cheeses, ice cream BUT I did NOT react to yogurt.
First of all the cheapest way to help with this problem is:
1. He needs to eat foods that contain PROBIOTICS (NOT all yogurts contain probiotics so READ ingredient labels CAREFULLY) or take probiotic supplements. The more live cells in probiotics, the better. Try this for a month. Meanwhile until his system will get better, instead of regular milk, he can drink
Lactose – Milk.
2. More expensive option is: There is a laser machine called Bio Allergenic. It treated my symptoms and now I can drink regular milk, eat ANY cheese, ice cream and I have absolutely NO more symptoms of bloating, gas, abdominal pain.
Google about this machine. Not all states have this special machine yet, we had to travel to a different state to get our treatments done.

My 6 year old son have following problems related to his breathing :
1) While in sleep mostly he breaths with open mouth & snoring.
2) He is having very disturbed sleep as he is very frequently waking up and start sleeping in sitting stage.
3) While in sleep sometimes he stop breathing for few seconds and suddenly breath with very loud & lengthy snoring sound.
4) In winter he never want him to be covered with Quilt or blanket everytime we try to cover up he throws it..
5) Slight breathing sound can be hear while he awake and play.
6) He is getting attack of cold/cough & high fever very often.
7)He is not gaining any weight .Height growth is there but very little
we consulted ent specialist & they are telling us to do surgery for adenoids
Please let us know what kind of diseas he has and what is the treatment for it.

My son was having adenoid and tonsels both. As he was 4 years old we were scared to go for operation. Someone told us that homeopathy has a cure for this and hence we can avoid operation. we consulted a famous homeopathy doctor and after taking homeopathy medicines my son got some relief and his frequently catching of infections stopped. But after a year of treatment his problem of adenoids and tonsels did not go away. Infact he had an ear infection which was not visible and was detected in some audio related tests. After seeing the test results, our alopathy doctor recommended us operation and we had to get him operated because he had 40% hearing loss due to infection in ears. Our surgen told us that if some organ grows in your body then homeopathy cannot bring down its size. Homeopathy is good to control infections but may not help in adenoids. I personally realized that going for operation was a good decision in our case and wont recommend operation unless the child is 5 yrs old.
My daughter just turned 3 we noticed that after last time she got a cold about a month and a half she started breathing a lot through her mouth all the time, she breathes hard while asleep and keeps her mouth open.
This was the first time she got a cold that last almost 2 weeks. And she complaint about her ear hurting a little. She has only had about 3 little colds no fever since she was born.
We took her to the doctor to check on that breathing through the mouth and phisicly he said she seemed fine he didn’t see anything. And recommended to have an xray done, the results showed an enlarged adenoids and the specialist recommended surgery to remove it and her tonsils too! Which I though it was not necesary!
I would do anything possible before I had to do surgery!
What are my other possibilities here?
What are my choisses before having my baby under for surgery?

My doctor told me that ideally we should avoid giving those things to kids which has artificial colors – like chocolates etc. and even if we give, then it is recommended that give your child a little warm water which clears and cleans the tonsels. Also would recommend giving him/her steam (plain steam) which will help in proper breathing… If your baby can go gargle then it will be good….
my son is four he has enlarged adenoids and has suffered with glue ear for almost 3years which the hospital say has cleared up. Hi there!My son is 21 months old and in the last two months he was down with high fever as a result of which we had to hospitalize him twice(May and June’10). He also had a ear infection and his CRP and WBC count was very high. He is also not eating properly, breathes through his mouth and his speech also is not developed(believe he should be speaking atleast 10 words now besides mama/dada).An x-ray was also taken and it showed an adenoid enlargement which the doctors mentioned was about 70%. My son is five years and 8 months old. He weighs about 21 kgs and height is 3 feet 9 inches. He used to have chronic cold since he started school at 3.5 years, although the frequency has reduced during the current year. Presently he is suffering from ear infection. He is on antibiotics now. The last ear infection was about 6 months ago. He snores in his sleep right from the time he was young yet does not use his mouth. Hello; I am researching about homeopathic medicine for treating enlarged tonsils and adenoids for my 2.5 year old daughter. She is in very good health; growth has been in the 90-percentile since she was born; her weight is also good for her height. We eat nutritious food and avoid sweets and empty calories. She is a very smart kid, vivacious and outgoing; she expresses her emotions very strongly too. Ever since she was 8 months old, she has had many MANY ear infections, but those are mostly gone now. Do you have a clinic in Bangalore. I have a daughter of 4 years & since last 1.5 year she is suffering from enlarged Adenoids problem.
Symptoms
1. While in sleep she snores, breathe from mouth.
2) she is having very disturbed sleep as she is very frequently waking up and she prefers to sleep in sitting pose.

We have taken advise from various Allopathic MD doctors & they suggested to get the adenoids removed via minor operation. where she need not be cut, it can be removed via mouth itself. Meanwhile they suggested FLIXONASE Innospray to control the size of Adenoids. It has worked but its just a steroid to supress the issue – thats it. It does not cure it. So we discontinued it.
Now we are getting her treated via homeopathic medicines since last 4 months & we can see similar results (Supression of problem) but not fixed. The problem keep coming back. Some night she don’t cough & snore in nights but some does. Infact 2 out of 10 nights she don’t snores, 4 out of 10 days she cough.
Homeo Medicines currently prescribed are :

3. TMVQ liquid (5 drops 3 times in 1/4 cup of water)

My son aged 8 is already under treatment of homeopathy medicine since 2006 for frequent cold,cough,fever. As he was not recovering from that situation I again visited Alopathy Padediatrician who suggested us to go ENT Surgeon. Now adeonoids are found and again recently severe ear infection eventhough he is taking homeopathy medicine. Due to severe ear infection I was asked to take 6 days course by ENT Surgeon. Doctors suggested to remove adeonoids for all these problems. If my son is already taking treatment of homeopathy then why there are problems such as open mouth,sore through,cold cough again and again. Due to his recurrent problems he has to be shifted to ENT Surgeon. my five year old son has been having otitis media off and on for the past three months. and has been on antibiotics four courses of which two lasted for more than 15 weeks and the fifth course is now on.
His paediatrician referred him to anENT Surgeon who got and Xray done (report says moderate enlagement of adenoids), Impedence audiometry (left ear- negative curve and right ear- flat curve) and a pure tone audiometry (left ear 20% loss and rt ear 40% loss: Both conductive).

My 3 year 9 months old son is suffering from frequent colds, cough & ear Infections ( About 10-12 a year). He is always breath with mouth, nose blocking and some times he snores in sleep. Recently we have consulted ENT Specialist and they are telling us to go for surgery i.e Removal of enlarged Adenoids & putting Grometts in ears.
Currently we are giving him homeopathy medicine “Agraphis 30c” and “Baryta carb 30c” since 2 weeks, but there is no recovery. I do not want him to stay on Antiboitices long time and could you please tell me does he safe to go the suregery? or can he continue with homeopathic medicines.

They did the Audiology test and confirmed me that i have frequent sensorial hearing loss in the both ears. My daughter has enlarged adenoids and doctor had advised her nasal spray constituing steroids… he also advised surgery if not cured.
I had then consulted a homeopathy doctor and she is being treated now.
Off late she has started getting earache and for the past couple of days is having fever. The homeopathy medicines are on but she is not getting releived.

I have a 7 year old son who regularly suffers from colds & cough, we have tried almost all the medinces, which help for a while and the cold re-occurs again. He started getting colds from the time he started nursery around 2 and half years of age. From the age of 3 he gets at least 2 ear infections a month from Sept till March, the antibiotics are not good for kids at this young age. I have now consulted a few ENT and they advised to have his adenoids removed and grommets inserted in boht ears. I am not comfortable with this solution, I would therefore like to know if Homeopathy has more hope for such cases and how long the duration of the course will be. I have a 5 year old son who for the past 2 years is on and off with nasal congestion or chest congestion. it always starts with a nasal congestion.
He is unable to have a head bath because after which he will stat with a blocked nose then we give him some prescribed medicine and then his nose will start to run.
From September 2011 he stated with a continious clearing of the throat and snoring. the doctor adviced us removal of the tonsils. then we took him to another doctor he just gave us some medication for 6months which he says is not a total solution to the problem.
Now he is unable to eat as he continously clears his throat. In his nose there are small pouches of soft swelling which leaves very little gap to allow air to pass thru.

My 4 year old daughter snores like adults. Her sleep is not disturb.She gets tickling cough on and off in all seasons. During winters she is always suffering from either cold or some form of cough. The cough gets ok by use of the following medicines (one or combo) – antim tart, ipecac, hepar, belladona. But the snoring just does not go. It is non stop at night, tea tree oil, camphor, vicks nothing helps in that.

hallo doc,i have a daughter aged 1yr 5months who at 6months old she was diagonised with adenoids enlargement.shes been under medication till now with not much improvement.
after treatment she gets ill gain after a week or two.she has difficulties in breathing at night and sweats alot and at times treated with antibiotics.she at times scraches her ears en vomits alot at night pertaining throat blockage.

My Son is 6 yr and 3 months old, overall he is an average kid. While sleeping he snores a lot and breath from his mouth. Snoring happens more during cold seasson else not very much noticable. Could you please advise me to treat snoring, If I take my son to the doctors here they will ask to remove tonsil , and i don’t want until i tried different options. I would really appreciate your advise..and I thank you for taking care of us.
Hello, my daughter is 8yrs old, she has been diagnosed with enlarged adenoids and has been advised to undergo surgical procedure to remove them. She has frequent cold and breathe through mouth while sleeping. Even when she doesn’t have cold, she appears to be speaking through her nose. I mean she has that sound in her voice. I am exploring if there is any homeopathy medicine we could try. She is physically very active and a competitive swimmer (almost swims 6-7 hrs per week).

My 5 year old son had the following problems related to his breathing :
1) While in sleep mostly he breaths with open mouth & snoring.
2) He is having very disturbed sleep as he is very frequently waking up and start sleeping in sitting stage.
3) While in sleep sometimes he stop breathing for few seconds and suddenly breath with very loud & lengthy snoring sound.
4) In winter he never want him to be covered with Quilt or blanket everytime we try to cover up he throws it..
5) Slight breathing sound can be hear while he awake and play.
6) He is getting attack of cold/cough & high fever very often. Almost 6-8 times a year
7) He is eating all type of foods but not willingly , when we force and be behind him to eat. He always drink less water.
10) He sweats a lot while sleeping.
Other wise his all physical & mental activity is very normal. He do not have any problem with his hearing , seeing or understanding the things.
Please let me know what kind of disease he had and what is the treatment for it.

Hello dr sharma,have a problem,my 2 year old daughter has started snoring since she has had flue,we took her to the doctor for the flue,she was given anti-biotic and pain & fever together with the cough mixture,she’s been snoring for 2 days since taking medication,is it normal for children to have a bad snore when she has flue or should I be worried?
