Homeopathic remedies for yellow mucus in nose, throat and lungs

Mucus is a normal slippery secretion produced by mucous membranes in the body. It is produced by membranes of the nose, sinuses, throat, respiratory tract and also digestive tract, urinary system, genitals, eyes and ears. Some amount of mucus produced naturally in the nose and throat is important as it functions to trap germs (like bacteria, viruses, dust, dirt) and prevents their entry into the lungs. But in case of some infection or allergy, mucus production tends to increase, it gets thick and also changes in color.

In case of infection, white blood cells are produced in excess and move to the airways to fight infection. The neutrophils present in white blood cells give the mucus yellow or green color. Yellow mucus in the nose, throat and lungs can be caused due to various reasons. Some of the main reasons include common cold, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia. The mucus (phlegm) expelled via coughing is called sputum. Depending on the cause behind yellow mucus several other symptoms can attend. These include sneezing, nasal blockage, PND (post nasal drip means dripping of mucus from back of the nose into the throat), headache, cough, difficult breathing, chest pain, fever and fatigue.

What Causes Piles During Pregnancy And After Childbirth?

If we talk of piles during pregnancy, usually piles occur during the third trimester (last three months of pregnancy). During pregnancy, extra pressure is exerted on the abdomen and the pelvic area from the growing baby. As a result, circulation of blood to the pelvic area is affected resulting in pooling of blood in the veins. Secondly, increased progesterone levels cause relaxation of walls of the veins predisposing them to get swollen. Additionally, constipation (which is one of the major reason behind piles) is a common problem faced by many women during pregnancy due to hormonal changes (which slows down movement of food through the gastric tract), pressure put by the growing baby on the intestines of the mother, intake of iron and calcium supplements that can also contribute to piles during pregnancy. Intense straining and prolonged pushing during labor pains also contribute to piles after childbirth. Piles are common especially after vaginal delivery, however it can still arise after a C-section. An instrumental delivery (like forceps delivery in which a doctor uses a tool to grasp the head of the baby to get the baby out of the birth canal) also increases risk of piles.

5 Best Homeopathic Medicines for Varicocele

Varicocele refers to an abnormal enlargement of veins (pampiniform plexus) in the scrotum (a sac that holds the testicles). Varicocele may lead to discomfort but mostly it causes no symptoms. It is a very common problem and around 10 to 15 out of 100 males are found to suffer from this problem. Though not a life threatening problem, it can lead to low sperm count and male infertility.

Homeopathic Treatment Of Varicocele

Homeopathy is very effective in mild to moderate cases of Varicocele and prevents surgery in most cases. The medicines act at the root of problem to bring excellent results. They stimulate the self-healing mechanism of the body to aid natural cure. As the healing system of the body is strengthened, the disease is completely eradicated. The homeopathic medicines improve blood flow in veins and provide relief in pain and swelling of scrotum.

Homeopathic medicines for Varicocele

The most widely recommended homeopathic medicines for Varicocele are Hamamelis, Calcarea Fluor, Pulsatilla and Arnica.

1. Hamamelis

One of the top grade medicines for Varicocele is Hamamelis.  This medicine works effectively to improve blood circulation in veins and reduce blood pooling. 7. Aesculus

This is another homeopathic medicine whose function is to ensure proper blood flow in veins. Its use is recommended when there is shooting pain in right testicle. Its use is also advised for drawing pain in testicle on either side.

Homeopathic medicines for low sperm count

To deal with low sperm count which can occur in people suffering from Varicocele, the two most important homeopathic medicines are Radium Bromatum and X-ray. It is advised to consult a physician to take these medicines who will properly guide you regarding potency and repetition of medicines.

What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Varicocele?

Varicocele may not lead to any symptoms in many cases. However, some signs and symptoms may indicate Varicocele:

1. A lump in scrotum/swelling in the scrotum: In most cases of Varicocele, a lump or swelling is present in the scrotum. In case of small Varicocele, lump may be felt but may not be seen. In large Varicocele, the enlarged and twisted veins in scrotum are visible looking like a bag of worms.

2. Side: Varicocele mostly is one-sided. Either side can be involved, however, chances of left-sided Varicocele remain higher. Varicocle is 80-90 per cent times common in left testicle. In rare cases, both sides can be involved.

3. Pain: Varicocele is usually painless but in a few cases, might also cause pain. The pain in the scrotum is usually dull, throbbing-like but rarely sharp in nature. Increased temperature in testicles, increased pressure in scrotal veins and stretching of nerve fibers in the spermatic cord from dilated veins may be a contributing factor in causing pain. The pain may worsen as the day progresses, while standing or after physical exertion. Pain may get better by lying on the back. The testicles may feel heavy as well.

4. Size: The affected testicle may look smaller than the other.

5. Growth of left testicle at low pace during puberty.

6. Varicocele may lead to decreased sperm production, reduced sperm motility and quality of sperm might reduce too. Shape of the sperms may become abnormal. Infertility may also arise in some cases. Lastly it can cause atrophy/shrinkage of size of the testicles.

What are the causes behind Varicocele?

1. There are two testicular arteries that supply oxygenated blood to testicles and two testicular veins which carry deoxygenated blood from testicles to heart. There is a network of small veins called pampiniform plexus in the scrotum (which holds the testes) that carries deoxygenated blood from testicle to testicular vein. The reason behind Varicocele is not clear yet. However, it is thought to arise from pooling of the blood in the veins of pampiniform plexus. This happens when the valves inside the veins of spermatic cord, that allows one-way blood flow, do not work the right way as they should. It prevents blood from flowing properly in needed direction resulting in the back (reverse) flow of blood causing the veins with in scrotum to widen and enlarge resulting in Varicocele.

Spermatic cord is a tube that hangs testes in scrotum and contains testicular artery, lymphatic vessels, pampiniform plexus, nerves and vas deferens which carry sperms from testes to penis).

2. Deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot in one of the deep veins of body usually in legs), thrombosis (blood clot within blood vessel) of pampiniform plexus are some of the rare causes of Varicocele.

3. It usually affects males between 15-25 age group.

4. Tobacco smoking may increase risk of Varicocele.

Classification

Based on size and clinical examination these are classified as follows:

1. Large varicoceles: These can be easily detected by simple inspection (looking over) and appear like bag of worms.

2. Medium varicoceles: These are the ones that are detected by palpation with fingers even without any bearing down by patient.

3. Small varicoceles: These varicoceles can only be detected during strong bearing down (valsalva).

Another classification is as follows:

1. Pressure type Varicocele: In this spermatic vein fills with blood resulting in grade I Varicocele.

2. Shunt type Varicocele: In this intense build-up of blood damages spermatic vein and also other veins causing larger varicocele including grade II and III.

Grading system of size of Varicocele

Grade 0 – When varicocele is not detected physically and can only be seen on conducting an ultrasound of scrotum

Grade I – When varicocele is felt only on palpation (checking with fingers) during valsalva maneuver when standing

Grade II – when varicocele is palpable when standing even without valsalva maneuver but not visible

Grade III – When it cause visible scrotal deformity i.e. varicocele is visible through scrotal skin

Grading as per colour Doppler, given by Sarteschi, is as follows:

Grade I – In this reflux occur at groin level during valsalva. There is no testicular enlargement.  Deformity of scrotum is absent.

Grade II – Reflux occurs at the level of proximal part of pampiniform plexus only during valsalva. There is no testicular enlargement or deformity of scrotum.

Grade III – In this grade, reflux occurs in distal vessels at level of lower scrotum during valsalva. There is absence of testicular enlargement or scrotal deformity.

Grade IV – There occurs spontaneous reverse blood flow increasing during valsalva and in addition to this, scrotal deformity and testicular hypertrophy (enlargement) may also be there.

Grade V – There occurs reflux in dilated pampiniform plexus at rest that increases during valsalva and is always attended with testicular enlargement.

Complications

1. Impaired sperm production: A certain body temperature is required in testes for normal good quality sperm production, maturation and function. The heat in scrotum is approx. 5degree less than that of the belly. The pampiniform plexus works to cool down blood in testicular artery prior its entry to testicle. If there occur enlargement of veins in pampiniform plexus its normal functionality drops resulting in overheating in testes that affects normal production of sperms. When microscopic semen examination is done in case of Varicocele, stress pattern is seen. The sperm count becomes low, the sperms show poor motility and there is increase in number of abnormal sperms.

2. 4 out of 10 males having Varicocele face infertility.

3. Low testosterone production by Leydig cells in testes

4. In boys, varicocele may slow testicle growth during puberty

5. Atrophy of testes

What other conditions needs to be ruled out when making diagnosis of varicocele (differential diagnosis)?

1. Hydrocele: Swollen scrotum from collection of excessive fluid in the sheath (tunica vaginalis) surrounding a testicle.

2. Epididymitis: Inflamed epididymis (a coiled tube at the back of testicle that stores sperms while they mature and carries sperms from the testes to the vas deferens).

3. Spermatocele: cyst developing inside the scrotum

4. Trauma

5. Testicular and paratesticular tumour

6. Testicular torsion: An emergency condition in which spermatic cord that carries blood to testes rotates and twists

7. Inguinal hernia: Bulging of the contents of the abdomen through a weak spot in lower abdominal wall

Diagnosis and Investigations

1. Physical examination: A physician can make a clinical diagnosis by visually checking scrotum and by palpation (checking with fingers and hands of scrotum). In many cases, Varicocele cannot be seen or felt in lying down position. So the doctor may also examine scrotum in standing position.

He may ask you to stand up, take a deep breath in standing position and to hold the breath and bear down to do the scrotal examination and check for any enlarged veins in it. It is called as Valsalva maneuver.

2. Scrotal Doppler ultrasound: Doctor may recommend doppler ultrasound of scrotum to confirm diagnosis and rule out any other cause of the symptoms.

Veins of pampiniform plexus wider than 3mm with blood flow in the wrong direction during valsalva maneuver is indicative of Varicocele. If it is Varicocele, grading will also be done with its help. Ultrasound also checks the size of testicles.

3. In case of Varicocele on the right side, it is important to rule out any mass or tumour in abdomen that may be the cause. There is a possibility of renal cell carcinoma in case of isolated right-sided Varicocele. It could be occurring from vena cava obstruction from right renal cancer vein tumour thrombus. If suspected CT scan is recommended.

I have swelling and lump in my scrotum, am I suffering from Varicocele?

Though having a swelling and lump in scrotum might be indicative of Varicocele, as it is one of the reasons behind it, but just on this basis, it cannot be confirmed as Varicocele. Other possible reasons could be hydrocele, spermatocele, epididymitis, tumour, so a proper case study and investigations (mainly ultrasound of scrotum) is required to reach a proper diagnosis.

Why is Varicocele more common on left side?

The reason could be the different path followed by both internal spermatic veins. The right internal spermatic vein terminates directly in inferior vena cava having low pressure while the left-sided internal spermatic vein connects with left renal vein with comparatively high pressure. Additionally, the particular angle at the junction of the left internal spermatic vein and left renal vein contribute to high chances of left-sided Varicocele.

Do I need to undergo any investigation to diagnose Varicocele?

Yes, for confirmatory diagnosis of varicocele, a doppler ultrasound of scrotum is required.

Does Varicocele go away on its own without treatment?

Once Varicocele occurs, it does not go away onits own. It is always advised to seek medical treatment in such cases.

Is Varicocele dangerous?

Though it is not dangerous or life threatening, it can result in certain complications like low sperm count and infertility.

I have been diagnosed with Varicocele grade II, I have no related pain, Do I need to get it treated?

I would advise you to take proper treatment for this even if it is painless to halt further progression of its grade and avoid any complications related to Varicocele, like low sperm count, infertility, low testosterone levels, erectile dysfunction.

Can my erectile dysfunction be related to my varicocele issue?

Yes it could be. There is a link between Varicocele and erectile dysfunction. Varicocele can lead to low production of testosterone which is the main primary male hormone. Low testosterone levels may contribute to erection issues.

5 Homeopathic Medicines for Post Herpetic Neuralgia

Post Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN) is a complication of Herpes Zoster also known as Shingles. Herpes Zoster is a viral infection caused by reactivation of Varicella Zoster virus (it is the same virus that causes chicken pox). Herpes Zoster is characterised by painful rash or blisters (fluid-filled bumps) on skin. The rash will only be on one side of the body, either right or left, in a particular area in a band-like pattern. If the pain of Herpes Zoster continues for more than three months in the affected skin areas after the skin rash has healed, then it is known as Post Herpetic Neuralgia. In one out of five people who get infected by Herpes Zoster, the person will have nerve pain following the healing of the rash. The stabbing type of pain may vary from discomfort to severe. Along with pain, burning, increased sensitivity, weakness of the affected skin area may also arise. The pain may continue for weeks, months or even a year after the rash has healed.

homeopathic medicines for postherpetic neuralgia

Homeopathy is highly effective in treating neuralgic complaints i.e. nerve pain. Homeopathic medicines for post herpetic neuralgia are deep acting remedies that can help resolve the problem.  As a first step, homeopathy controls the intensity and frequency of the pain. Then the medicines work to remove the chronic and recurrent pain. In mainstream medicine, painkillers, steroids, pain-relieving skin patches, anti-convulsants and anti-depressants are given to manage pain in cases of post herpetic neuralgia. These give temporary pain relief but the pain does not get cured completely. In homeopathy, the medicines are given to resolve the pain from its root and give a complete cure.

With the use of homeopathic medicines, the burning sensation, hypersensitivity, itchy feeling associated with this condition also gets healed. This is because the medicines are given keeping in mind the totality of the symptoms that work on every aspect of the disease. The symptoms though, get better gradually, may take some time but once relief sets in, the complaint gets better till it goes away completely in a few months’ time.

Homeopathy aims to fight the viral infection in PHN cases by boosting the self-healing mechanism of the body. This way it does not just work superficially; rather it works deeply to eradicate the root cause behind it. Therefore, it ensures that the condition gets treated from its origin and that too in the most harmless and natural way.

Homeopathic medicines used to treat post herpetic neuralgia are 100% safe with zero side effects as these are sourced from natural substances. These medicines are used in highly diluted doses that ensure safe recovery.

What are the Causes behind Post Herpetic Neuralgia?

Post Herpetic Neuralgia, as mentioned in the beginning, is a complication of Herpes Zoster. Herpes Zoster is a viral disease leading to painful skin eruptions caused by varicella zoster virus. Varicella zoster virus is the virus that causes chicken pox when a person gets infected with this virus initially for the first time. Though the person recovers from chicken pox within weeks, the virus remains in the nerve cells in an inactive state. This virus can reactivate any time it finds a suitable environment like low immunity, some sort of medicines, etc. When the dormant virus gets reactivated, it leads to Herpes Zoster or Shingles with painful skin eruptions. The Herpes Zoster rash resolves within two to four weeks’ time. In some cases, even after the skin eruptions completely resolve, the pain continues for months or years together. This nerve pain persists for more than three months. The PHN results from damage to nerve fibres caused by Herpes Zoster virus. As a result of damaged nerve fibers, the message of transmission from the skin to the brain cannot be passed normally. This nerve gets muddled, transmitting random pain signals to the brain when pain is burning, excruciating.

Risk Factors

Certain factors increase the risk of PHN as follows:

1. Old age: The risk of PHN increases with age. Those above 50 yrs of age are at risk, PHN is rare under 40 yrs of age.

2. Herpes Zoster on the face or trunk (body part except head, neck and limbs)

3. Weak immune system: The immune system may be compromised due to certain medical conditions, such as cancer or HIV, or certain medications, such as steroids, chemotherapy, and immunosuppressant medicines.

4. Intensity of the skin rash due to Herpes Zoster is highly intense

5. Women are more at risk than men

6. Diabetes

3. Bunionette (Tailor’s bunion): It forms on the outer side of the base of little toe. Bunionette is called tailor’s bunion because tailors used to sit with cross legs for long durations of time that put pressure on the side of feet and consequent bunion formation on the little toe.

Complications Of Bunion

The complications that can arise in cases of bunion are:

1. Bursitis: Bursa is a small fluid-filled sac (bursa) that surrounds bones near the  joint. Bursa contains synovial fluid that helps to reduce friction of bone with other structures like ligaments, muscles and tendons during joint movement. It can get swollen and inflamed (called bursitis) when big toe joint gets bigger due to bunion formation.

2. Metatarsalgia: In this condition, the ball of feet becomes painful and swollen.

3. Hammertoe: Bending of middle joint of a toe especially the toe adjacent to big toe

Diagnosis Of Bunion

A doctor can diagnose bunion just by having a look at the big toe. An X-ray can however be recommended to look for joint damage.

Prevention Of Bunion

1. Select the shoes carefully. Avoid tight and narrow pointed toe shoes and choose wide toe box shoes.

2. Wear right fitting shoes. The shoes you wear should not squeeze any part of the foot

3. Avoid wearing high heeled footwear as it puts pressure in the front of the feet

Suffering From Intractable Anal Fistula? Safe Homeopathic Remedies for Anal Fistula

anal-fistula-homeopathic-treatment

An anal fistula is a small tunnel with an internal opening in the anal canal and an external opening in the skin of the perianal area (an area that surrounds the anus). An anal fistula usually results after improper healing of an anal abscess following pus drainage.

Homeopathy is the best alternative for treating many surgical diseases including anal fistula. Homeopathic remedies for anal fistula treat the condition with gentleness and safety, and with no side effects because of their natural origin. In the first place these medicines help to manage the signs and symptoms like the pus discharge associated with anal fistula, pain, swelling, and itching around the anus. The natural medicines also assist in regularising bowel movements and treating hard stool, which could otherwise worsen the symptoms. Simultaneously, they halt the further worsening of the medical condition. Afterwards, with regular use of these medicines gradual healing of the anal tract takes place. The results, however, vary depending on the severity and complexity of the problem.

Homeopathy treats anal fistula cases by boosting body’s own restorative healing processes. It uses highly diluted substances to heal itself from within on its own. It helps to fight germs causing pus formation and throw them out of the body followed by gentle healing. Thus, it brings natural recovery in fistula cases with no harmful after effects.

Homeopathy employs the use of medicines as per case presentation. As the signs and symptoms vary from person to person, so does the homeopathic prescription. Also the potency, dose and repetition of medicines differs from case to case. So, it is advised to avoid self-medication and always consult a homeopathic doctor for the correct prescription.

Homeopathy is very beneficial for treating anal fistula both in recently-developed as well as long term (chronic) cases. In mainstream medicine, usually surgery is recommended to treat cases of anal fistula that carries a risk to re-form even after surgical correction. Here homeopathy can save a person from undergoing surgical procedures in most of the cases. Though cure with homeopathic medicines in fistula cases is a time-consuming process, it is the best alternative to surgical intervention.

4. Fever and chills may also be present in a few cases

5. A feeling of weakness can accompany the above symptoms

Anal Fistula: What Causes It?

An anal fistula arises from a clogged anal gland, followed by an infection in anal gland. Anal glands are present in the wall of anal canal that secrete fluid. These may sometimes get clogged by foreign matter like fecal bacteria that may cause infection in anal glands. Due to the infection, an abscess is formed which drains by itself or via surgery through a skin point around the anus. Anal fistula refers to a tunnel that develops along this tract running from the anal gland to a hole in the skin surrounding the anus.

Some of factors that increases risk of anal fistula are as follows:

1. An infection or trauma to anal region

2. An improper healing of an anal abscess (pus filled mass) following pus drainage

3. A surgery near the anus

4. Having IBD means inflammatory disease, which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. It is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in gastrointestinal tract, diverticulitis (infected pouch in colon), tuberculosis and certain sexually transmitted infections (eg HIV, syphilis)

5. Radiation treatment of anal cancer

6. Chances of anal fistula are more in males as compared to females

Diagnosis Of Anal Fistula

To diagnose anal fistula, a physician examines perianal area where a hole is seen in anal fistula (denoting its external opening) that in most cases is draining fluid or pus. To detect internal opening and the entire tract of anal fistula, the following tests are recommended:

1. Anoscopy: The doctor views inside the anus and rectum using an instrument

2. MRI and an ultrasound of anal regionto see complete path of fistula tract

3. Anal Fistulogram: It is an X-ray process (taken after injecting a contrast) to view fistula

4. Colonoscopy: If ulcerative colitis is also suspected

Complications Of Anal Fistula

If anal fistula is not treated rightly, then recurrence of abscess near anus is possible and there are chances of developing a complex fistula. Fecal incontinence (inability to hold stool), and cellulitis (skin infection) are other complications. The surgery of anal fistula also carries complications like fecal incontinence and recurrence of anal fistula.

Dissolve your Heel Spurs – Top 6 Homeopathic medicines for calcaneal Spur and Heel Pain

Homeopathic medicines for Calcaneal Spurs

Calcaneal Spur/ heel spur refers to a sharp, pointed, horny outgrowth on the calcaneal bone present in the heel. The main symptom of a calcaneal spur is pain in the heel around the spur. Pain in the heel not only restricts movement, but the general discomfort while walking or standing affects the persona.

Homeopathic medicines offer a very safe and complete treatment for heel spur / calcaneal spur. They prove to be strong in treating the condition. Homeopathic medicines help in both dissolving the spur as well as relieving the pain in heels due to spur, thus providing complete treatment for calcaneal spurs. Mainstream medicine mainly makes use of over-the-counter pain medications, corticosteroids and anti- inflammatory injections in heel spur cases. They might help but the results are short-lived and the condition may not be resolved.  On the other hand, homeopathy goes to the core of the problem to give permanent results.

Homeopathy focuses on treating the underlying cause like damage to ligaments/muscles/tendons and control the inflammatory process as in case of arthritis, plantar fasciitis to yield excellent results in heel spur cases. Once the root problem is addressed, the bony outgrowth tends to dissolve gradually in a natural way.

The use of homeopathic medicines in calcaneal spur may also prevent surgical intervention in most cases of heel spur as recommended in conventional treatment for many cases. Homeopathic medicines work internally to dissolve calcium deposits. With a complete course of homeopathic treatment under the guidance of a homeopathic physician, a complete cure occurs in most of the cases of heel spur.

Symptoms Of Heel Spur

1. Heel spur mainly leads to sharppain in the heel. The pain arises from injury in the soft tissue in the heels caused by a bony spur. The pain gets worse when a person steps on the ground after a period of inactivity, especially in the morning following long rest. The pain increases while walking, running and standing. The character of pain may be described as sharp pain, dull pain, or pain as from pin-pricking.

2. The heel may be inflamed, swollen, and warm to touch

3. The heel may be tender to touch

4. In long-term cases, a bony growth may be visible on the heel

5. However in some cases, there may be no symptoms

Cause Behind Heel Spur

The bony outgrowth is the build-up of calcium deposits on the heel bone. A heel spur forms when excessive stress and strain is put repeatedly on ligaments, muscles, tendons, and fascia of the foot.  Due to repeated stress and strain, there is damage to muscles, ligaments, tendons, and plantar fascia (a band of tissue connecting the heel bone to the base of toes) that cover the heel bone. As a result, the heel bone is also stressed and becomes prone to trauma and formation of calcaneal spur. A single stressful episode on the heel like from a sports activity does not cause heel spur. These develop with repeated stress put on the heel over a period of time.

Risk Factors For Heel Spur

1. Recurrent stress on the heel from walking, jumping, jogging, running especially on hard surfaces is the main risk factor.

2. People who are either obese or athletic are prone to develop calcaneal spur.

3. Having Plantar Fasciitis (inflamed plantar fascia) increases the risk of developing heel spurs.

4. Wearing high heels and ill-fitted or worn-out shoes also puts a person at risk of formation of calcium deposits on the heel bone.

5. Having arthritis (joint inflammation), flat feet, diabetes and gait issues (it affects balance and coordination as a result of which the sufferer is unable to walk correctly) also puts a person at risk of heel spur

Are Heel Spurs And Plantar Fasciitis Same?

Heel spur and plantar fasciitis are often confused because both cause heel pain, but these conditions are not the same. A heel spur is calcium deposit that forms a bony outgrowth on heel bone. Plantar fasciitis is a condition where the plantar fascia (a tissue band that connects the heel bone to the base of the toes) is irritated and swollen. Plantar fasciitis increases the risk of heel spurs.

Diagnosis Of Heel Spur

Heel spur causes heel pain that may arise from other reasons as well (for example plantar fasciitis, gout, arthritis) and heel spur is not visible from outside, when we look at the heel, so it is difficult to confirm diagnosis only on the basis of symptoms.  X-ray is the most commonly used investigation to detect a heel spur.

The symptoms of RLS occur in both the legs in most cases, however, in some people, they affect only on one side. It affects the legs mostly, but the arms and head may be affected as well.

The Restless Leg Syndrome manifests itself in a couple of ways as follows:

1. Urge to move legs: A compulsive or uncontrollable urge to move legs to get rid of various unpleasant sensations felt in the legs.

2. Sensations in legs: The various sensations vary from creeping, tingling, crawling, and pin-pricking to aching and throbbing, burning, and electric sensations. Some people find it difficult to explain the sensations they have in their legs.

3. Worsening time:The symptoms get worse at rest mainly at evening/night; in lying or sitting position, when you are relaxing.

4. Relieving factors: Movements, stretching, and walking relieves the symptoms.

5. As the symptoms get worse at night, it makes sleeping difficult at night which causes daytime drowsiness, fatigue, irritability, diffand iculty in concentration the following morning.

6. The above-mentioned symptoms may come and go and vary in intensity. These may be only present at night or in some people the entire day and night. For some, it is a minor problem while for others, it can be quite troublesome, impairing quality of life. The symptoms seem to worsen with age.

Causes Of Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome cannot be attributed to any specific causes. However, certain pointers may indicate RLS, which are as follows:

1. A genetic tendency towards developing RLS has been noted. In about 90% of the people suffering from RLS, a family history of this complaint is often present.

2. It is also suggested that imbalance of dopamine levels (a brain chemical which sends signals for muscle movement) may cause RLS. Parkinson’s disease is also linked with reduced dopamine levels. This is the reason that some people having Parkinson’s disease are also seen to be suffering from RLS.

3. Low iron levels in the brain may contribute to Restless Leg Syndrome.

4. There are other many medical conditions linked with RLS like:

varicose veins (swollen, enlarged, twisted veins), depression, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), diabetes mellitus, peripheral neuropathy (weakness, numbness, or pain in hands or feet from nerve damage), rheumatoid arthritis (an autoimmune joint disorder that causes joint inflammation), hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland)

5. Use of certain medicines is also associated with the development of RLS, like antidepressants, medicines to treat allergies, nausea, etc.

6. RLS can occur during pregnancy. In some women, RLS develops during pregnancy and the symptoms mostly go away after delivery. While if a woman is already suffering from RLS, symptoms may get worse during pregnancy.

7. Women are more at risk of RLS as compared to males.

8. Alcohol and caffeine can trigger symptoms of RLS.
