If your child is having cough very frequently, and is triggered by exertion or is frequently having cough more in the morning or night, there are chances that it is not just plain cough or bronchitis. It could mean more than that. The child could be having asthma. Wheezing is often thought to be the only indicator for asthma. This in fact is not the complete truth. At times cough may be the only symptom that your kid shows. This situation in medical terminology is also called as ‘cough variant asthma’.
How is asthma diagnosed?
Wheezing, shortness of breath and continuous or intermittent cough are usually the classical symptoms of asthma. But nowadays the diagnostic criterion for asthma has been changed by the Pediatricians. Diagnosis of asthma nowadays include cough(with or without wheezing) that is Recurrent, cough that is induced by exertion like running, crying, laughing etc and cough that aggravates during night and in the morning hours. It doesn’t mean that all kids who have such kinds of cough will eventually be termed as asthmatics. There are other aspects to it too. Other symptoms of allergies, family history for asthma or allergies, reaction to weather changes or changes during allergy seasons and the causative factors for the onset of cough are taken into consideration while making the diagnosis of asthma
In small kids wheezing might not be heard until they are at least 18 to 24 months old. Other symptoms such as cough that is of rattling in nature, rapid breathing and frequent chest colds are the indicators for asthma.
What is asthma?
In asthma the airways in our lungs get inflamed producing excessive mucus, swelling and contraction; this causes an obstruction in the normal flow of the air (that we breathe) through our airways. These changes produce cough, wheezing and shortness of breath.
What causes asthma?
The asthmatic changes in lungs occur mainly due to three main reasons. – Allergy, viral respiratory infections (syncytial virus and parainfluenza virus) and airborne irritants (like smoke, fumes etc.).
Certain factors make it more likely that the child will develop asthma. Hereditary factor plays a very important role. Kids are more likely to have asthma if someone in their family (parents, grandparents, brother sister) has asthma or other allergies. Presence of other allergies like skin allergy or nasal allergy also predisposes the child to have asthma.
Homeopathy for childhood asthma.
Homeopathic philosophy believes that asthma can be completely cured; for asthma to be completely eliminated from the body the disease needs to be treated in two different stages. Firstly whenever there is an acute episode of an asthmatic attack, homeopathic treatment needs to be given according to the symptoms presented by the child. Secondly between the periods of attack when the child seems fine, homoeopathic medicines that build up the child resistance towards such asthma attack and eradicate the disease in totality , needs to be given. This kind of treatment is also called as constitutional treatment. Homeopathic medicines that have been found very useful in eradicating the tendency towards asthma are Natrum Sulphuricum and Bacillinum. My four year old is very energetic and playful.
He gets cough regularly since last six months. Doctor had suggested to use Albutrol inhaler for some time and it gave relief. However, it was not too effective and doctor had used pulmicort (steroid) to reduce.
Still cough returned.
He is not having fever or cold or having running nose. He does not seem to have flum.
The cough suddenly appears. We tried to identify of any food allergy and that seem to be the cause.
In fact today he had continuous cough for last 3 hours and then we gave him Albutrol and he seem to have temporary relief.

My 20 month old daughter has been having a nagging dry hacking cough at night for the past 8 weeks. We have been to 3 different drs through this time period. The first pediatrician placed her on singulair, the montelukast class which helped initially, she was on that for 10 days, once there was a gap, the cough came back again at night. He told us to avoid using the benadryl, the antihistamine as that would further dry her throat and worsen her coughing. When i took her to the allergist after this, upon his recommendation, there was a negative allergy test but she was diagnosed with a sinus infection. The pediatrician disagreed with this diagnosis, as he says,children this young do not develop sinuses fully for any kind of infection to take place. Anyhow, my daughter was placed on 10 days regimen of augmentin, and thoughj she improved initially, she then went back to coughing in the night again. Now, she was given a 7 day course of augmentin as the allergist felt the “sinus infection” was still not fully cleared. No change in her cough at night though! So now, we went to a 3rd dr, another pediatrician, who after hearing her whole history, the duration and symptoms, claims there is a possibility of cough variant asthma. We are now doing inhaler treatments of albuterol, q 4-6 hours a day, there has been a dramatic decrease noticed in her nighttime coughing where she has not been hacking away in her sleep! My greatest concern is about how long will she need this therapy? i dont want her depending on an inhaler, or end up on steroid inhalers..we have used humidifiers, no relief there, either. Can you suggest something for a toddler that will be curative rather than masking this problem?

My 3 yr old Daughter is diagnosed with “Cough variant asthma”.we stay in Midwest USA.She starts coughing immidiately when she is exposed to cold air,weather changes, viral infections and after eating/drinking anything cold.She suddenly develops a congestion in the lungs even before we realize that she is affected.
We Are really concerned that it might develop into Classical Type of asthma

I am female age 62 fair complexion normal built hiegh 5 feet . About 3 days back I suddenly developed sore throat with dry coughing . From next day symptoms continued in addition high fever 103 f also noticed .Paracetamol was given to control fever 6 hrly . Now fever is low around 101 f . currently allopathic treatment is being given but not much improvement . Doctor is treating for soar through and dry cough . one antibiotic tab , cough syrup and tab for fever .
My son (Mahin)is 5yrs old. He is having recurrent coughing (with little mucus) on approximately alternate day since last 1.5 months. He was given Zocef, Dilo-BM and Benadryl by his pediatrician. Symptoms were mildly controlled with this therpy but no cure. Then, X-ray was taken and chest was found to be clear. His pediatrician asked to continue the same treatment (total of 14 tablets of Zocef were given). Since there was no imrpovement and he continued coughing every third day at any time in the day except morning and late night. When coughing starts it continues for 2-3hours. Hence we chnaged pediatrician and he had prescribed zerotuss, Montelukast and Dilo-BM suspecting asthma. This treatment is started since yesterday.
With above background informaiton can you suggest what it could be ?

my son who is 4 and 1/2 years old is suffering from reccurent cough and chest congestion. Some time he also has a running nose. his coughing increases at night time and some times in the morning also.
He was hospitalised and treated for Pneumonia last year November.
He has been on various cough syrups, bronchodiallators, expectorents and a hell lot of other medications. he is not having any fever and chills. Just a cough only.
The recent medication he is on is ZEROTUSS, from Aristo ( Levocloperastine based cough Syrup.

mughe pichle 5 salon se khansi ki problem hi . night me khanshi badh jati hai aur kisi dava se thik nahi hoti . main is samya metaspray (spray) and Montec L.C tablet le raha hun . sirf isi tablet se fayda hota hai lekin ye lagatar khani pad rahi hai. jab bhi khana chhod deta hun to fir khansi ane lagti hai. My wife is suffering form chronic cough from last five month.He is present taking treatment form doctor who has suggest her some tablet and cupsule to be taken in pump.but still there is no improvement. she has done xray nad blood test which are negitive.But some air blowing test shows she has Astama.
