What is the Reason behind Gas Formation in Abdomen?

Some gas formation is quite normal and is part of the process of digestion itself. The passing of gas is mostly a result of the food that we eat or its interaction with the kind of bacteria present in our intestines.  Flatulence is generally produced when undigested food is acted upon by bacteria in the large intestine. When the digestive system is not able to digest certain carbohydrates (like sugar starches and fiber found in different food items) due to shortage or absence of certain enzymes, the undigested carbohydrates (when they reach the large intestine) are broken down by harmless bacteria to produce gas (carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and methane). Certain food items produce more flatulence than others because they contain more indigestible carbohydrates.

Some of the substances that lead to the overproduction of gas are – beans, dairy products, onions, celery, carrots, sprouts, fruits (raisins, bananas, apricots), and complex carbohydrates like pulses. Gases like methane, hydrogen, and hydrogen sulphide are the main reasons of flatulence. Hydrogen Sulphide is responsible for the odor of the flatus. Though the symptoms are usually bloating, abdominal pain, belching, and flatulence, not everyone experience all of them. The amount of gas produced and the sensitivity of the gastrointestinal tract to gas determines the kind and the intensity of the symptoms.

Why do Some Individuals Suffer More from Gas than Others do?

The answer lies in the fact that some of us are biologically more prone to have this problem whereas in others, eating habits contribute majorly to this disorder. Increased gas formation may also occur from certain gastric problems:

1. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS):It is a disorder of the large intestine that causes altered bowel movements (diarrhea, constipation, or alternating diarrhea and constipation), bloating, gas, and cramps in the abdomen. The cause of IBS is unknown but may involve abnormal movements and contractions of intestinal muscles and increased sensitivity to pain in the intestine. People with IBS have this increased sensitivity of the intestinal walls and may even cause even a small amount of gas formation to cause excessive bloating in the abdomen.

2. Lactose intolerance:  Gas formation increases among those people who suffer from lactose intolerance. If there is lactose intolerance, the sufferer cannot completely digest lactose in milk. Gas, diarrhea, and bloating take place after consuming milk or other dairy products.

3. Celiac disease (gut allergy to wheat): Those with a wheat allergy also suffer from excessive flatulence. In celiac disease, eating gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley) triggers an immune reaction in the small intestine leading to damage of the lining of the small intestine with the passage of time, and hampers nutrient absorption. The symptoms of this disease include diarrhea, fatigue, bloating, weight loss, and anemia.

4. Cohn’s disease: It is an inflammatory bowel disease in which any part of the digestive tract gets inflamed due to an autoimmune response. It can cause gas, and bloating along with other main symptoms of abdomen pain, diarrhea, weakness, and weight loss.

5. Chronic constipation: In constipation the digestive process slows down due to which stool remains in the colon for an extended time period. Hence the bacteria get more time to ferment stool leading to gas and bloating.

6. SIBO(small intestinal bacterial overgrowth): It refers to a condition that results from an imbalance of the gut bacteria. It happens when excessive bacteria or the wrong type of bacteria grows in the small intestine. It can lead to various symptoms including gas, bloating, abdomen pain, nausea, diarrhea, or constipation.

What Lifestyle Factors Contribute in Excessive Gas Formation?

1. Eating Rapidly- Eating too fast leads to excessive swallowing of air, which causes excessive gas and bloating in the gastrointestinal tract. It leads to inadequate chewing which causes digestive problems and increased fermentation in the intestines.

2. Lack of Physical Activity- Sedentary lifestyle or no routine physical activity can reduce intestinal motility. This may result in gas accumulation, discomfort and even constipation.

3. Overeating- Eating large meals burden the gastrointestinal system that leads to poor digestion and fermentation of food causing excessive gas formation in the abdomen.

4. Stress and Anxiety- Psychological stress significantly disrupts the gastrointestinal function as it alters the gut motility. It further slows down the digestion and causes bloating, gas, and discomfort in the abdomen.

5. Excessive Caffeine Intake- Consuming more caffeine can also irritate the gut lining leading to abdominal discomfort, acid reflux and bloating.

Which measures provide relief from gas and bloating?

Few lifestyle changes that can help in managing excessive gas formation are:

1. Avoid late night eating

2. Maintain Hydration

3. Add some physical activity in your routine

4. Identify and avoid triggers

5 Limit alcohol and smoking

6. Restrict caffeine intake

7. Take a short walk after meals

8. Avoid eating too much in one meal, rather divide your meals

9. Maintain meal regular timings and avoid eating between meals

10. Manage your stress and anxiety

11. Avoid lying down immediately after eating

12. Limit consumption of carbonated beverages as they can lead to excessive air entry into digestive tract

13. Adapt thoughtful eating habits, such as slow eating, chewing food properly, avoiding talking while eating, etc..

  15. hi I enjoyed reading your website and I am hoping you may be able to help me. I began to experience a sharp and sudden burst of blood pressure in 2009. for no reason at all I would get a sudden surge in my blood pressure and then my heart would start to pound excessively. I also had shortness of breath and I would become very dizzy and scared. my abdomen would bloat and become rock hard. I saw a gp and he did order an ultrasound which indicated my gallbladder was the cause of these symptoms. I was referred to a surgeon and he removed my gall bladder. I had complications from surgery and I have never returned ‘back to normal’. my problem is I am still having these ‘attacks’. they removed the gall bladder and said I would no longer have these ‘attacks’ but this is not the case. I have these symptoms quite often and I did have both an endoscopy and gastroscopic follow up exam but both doctors found no cause for these annoying and frightening ‘attacks’. I never had these kinds of problems prior to 2009. I had the surgery in 2010. I got a terrible infection from the removal. I have had an ERCP done but the surgeon was unable to complete this procedure. I am in constant pain and now, eating food is extremely painful. every time I try to go to bed I get this ‘attack’ within 5 to 10 minutes and I am forced to get up and pace in my apartment. it seems I can’t lay down at all, I rarely get a good night’s rest and I am completely exhausted all of the time. My doctor calls this fibromyalgia. these symptoms are preventing me from employment &/or schooling. I am not living my life. I live in constant fear that something vey terrible is going to happen to me because of these attacks. I have read many other comments very similar to mine but can’t get a definitive diagnosis as to what is causing these attacks. please if there is any info that you could provide for me I would be eternally grateful to you. I don’t understand what is causing these attacks and I don’t know how to stop them. my doctor treats me for the pain only. because the endoscopy and gastro exams showed no abnormalities my gp is not investigating the cause to these symptoms any further. I have had to seek emergency medical attention at least once a month, 12 visits to emergency each year following the gall bladder removal. I am currently 48 years of age, female, and 3 years post menopausal. after I had my gall bladder I never got my period again. Please reply and thank you.
