Numbness of the hands and fingers mainly arises from irritation, compression or damage to the nerves that supply the hands and fingers. I had breast cancer which was removed two years ago. I am 80 years old now. Borderline diabetes. No other complication. Six months ago my fingers went numb. Pain. And burning. I feel a severe numbness in fingers of the right hand alongwith a pain in thumb of the same hand.It usually occurs during the night hours or while holding something for long in the same hand!

My brothers wife, 70 yrs old, had fractured her left wrist, operated successfully and healed in about 2 yrs. Now, her left thumb has become very weak, bends backwards more than usual and cannot grab anything. All other fingers in left hand are functioning normally. Complains about not being able to hold anything with anything that requires grip with left hand thumb. She has no pain in Left thumb. All medical tests (X-ray, mri etc.) are normal.
