The sciatic nerve happens to be the largest nerve in our body. It starts from the lower part of the spinal cord and runs down through the hips and the back of the thigh into the lower leg and foot. The word ‘Sciatica ‘describes a condition of pain and sometimes numbness in the area through which the sciatic nerve passes. Sciatica or the pain in the course of the sciatic nerve occurs when there is a compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve by a problem in the lower back or in the course of sciatic nerve. It is when these discs get pushed (due to aging and wear -tear and arthritis), that the nerve roots of sciatic nerve get compressed or irritated. This leads to an inflammation on the nerve roots causing pain in the course of sciatic nerve.
Sciatica pain usually radiates from the lower part of the back through the buttocks and into the back of the leg and calf muscle. Sciatica pain can range from a very mild ache or spasm in the back of the leg to a very severe incapacitating pain. It can at times be felt like sudden electric shocks or jolts. Usually, only one leg is affected by sciatica. Sciatica pain may also be accompanied by feeling of numbness and weakness in the leg and foot. Patients suffering from sciatica may also complain of tingling or pins and needle sensation in toes and foot. In an advanced case of disc bulge and nerve compression patients may lose their control over bladder and bowel movement. This is a rare but a serious condition and requires an immediate emergency care.

dear doctor, my MRI report says 1.retrolisthesis (grade1) of L5 over S1 vertebra with disc dessication with broad based disc protrusion at L5-S1 level with spinal stenosis with compression of the adjecent nerve root. 2.disc dessication with central disc bulge at L4-L5 level causing indentation over adjecent thecal sac with mild B/L neural foraminal compromise. 3.ligamentum flavum hypertrophy at T10-T11 and T11-T12 level leading to spinal stenosis.
i am aged 62 now. above is my MRI report. for last 2 and half years i am having pain in my buttocks and hamstrins(posterior thighs). i can walk 2-3 km. after that i feel numbness in both the feet . just 3 yrs. back i was very good player of tennis and had running on the court better than youngesters but now my running has become very slow and feel as though i am getting my muscles weaker and weaker with the passage of time.

My brother is suffering from acute sciatic pain.He is 40 yeards old.We have physiotherapy sessions ,homeopathic treatment also.However the pain hs only aggravated.The MRI was also done,which confirmed it as sciatic .

Being in a car accident is a sure way to end up with back pain. Te atrthiris was probably already there, that would no be caused by the car accident and show up so quickly. Arthritis is a slow progressive problem, and it hits most people, you haven’t said how old you are so I can’t tell if it’s due to age at this point. But, MRI’s see just so much, esecially in the back, they can miss so much, believe me. I hate having one taken of my back, which is done just about yearly and they see a little change, but not much and my back is so bad I can’t walk, sit or lie down witout pain. My pain is from an auto-immune disease and will be with me for my life.Anyway, going to a pain doctor is the best way to go, as long as you go to a good doctor, not one who just gives out drugs and doesn’t really care about how you feel and how you are coming along. ANd without a doubt pysical therapy is a must, you don’t get better without working at it.
