A hookworm infection is an infection caused by intestinal parasites called hookworm. Among various hookworms the main hookworms that can cause infection includes Ancylostoma duodena and Necator americanus. Symptoms 

There may be no symptoms at all of this infection especially if a person is healthy and has strong immunity, take an iron rich diet and the infection is of mild intensity. In cases where symptoms arise, initially there occurs itching and skin rash from allergic reaction located on the skin area from where the larvae penetrated into the skin. When the hookworm enters and grows in the intestine there appears diarrhoea (loose stool), pain in abdomen, abdominal colic / cramps, loss of appetite, nausea, blood in stool, tired feeling, weight loss and fever. In long term cases anaemia may occur. This arises because the hookworm get nutrients by feeding on the human blood. The chances of intense anaemia are high if the diet is not proper. Inflammation in one or both the ovaries (a part of the female reproductive system that produces an ovum means the egg and the female hormones) is referred to as oophoritis. It is frequently seen in combination with salpingitis (inflamed fallopian tubes ) and in this case it is known as salpingo oophoritis. Causes 

This condition is common in young females who are sexually active. Mostly it occurs due to sexually transmitted infections (STI’s). First example of such infection is gonorrhea (it is a STI caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae). Another example of this type of infection is chlamydia (this STI is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis). Next it can arise from bacterial infection that travels upwards from vagina, cervix and fallopian tubes. It may result for example during childbirth, from incorrect insertion of intrauterine device or inserting it without proper sterilization, from an abortion/miscarriage. Other than above it may occur from malfunctioning of the immune system known as autoimmune oophoritis.

Symptoms 

There may be no symptoms of oophoritis in some cases. When symptoms do arise, they can come slowly and gradually in some cases while in others they occur suddenly. The symptoms include pelvic pain or lower abdominal pain, heavy bleeding during menses, inter menstrual bleeding, excessive vaginal discharge that can be offensive, painful intercourse, bleeding during intercourse, pain / burning while urinating, difficulty in passing urine. In long run cases fever, chills and vomiting can also appear. 

If this condition is not properly treated in time then it can lead to damage of the ovaries and fallopian tubes. The damage to the fallopian tube increases the risk of ectopic pregnancy (In this case the fertilized egg in spite of attaching to the uterus is attached to outside the uterus like in fallopian tube, cervix, abdominal cavity). It also makes a female prone to infection and abscess ( a pocket containing pus) formation. In case the abscess bursts it can cause sepsis (which needs immediate medical help as it is severe and can be life threatening). It can also lead to infertility due to scar tissue and blockages.

Malabsorption Syndrome refers to disorders in which the small intestines are unable to properly absorb enough nutrients (like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals) from the food. Reasons

The small intestine plays the major role of absorbing nutrients from the partially digested food into the bloodstream. Causes

It can also result from excessive use of antibiotics and some other drugs like colchicine, tetracycline, irritant laxatives and radiation therapy. Another cause is parasitic disease (eg. giardia, or helminthiasis). Lactose intolerance or lactase deficiency is also one of the reasons behind it. Apart from these it can also occur in case of cystic fibrosis (It is an inherited disorder that mostly cause damage to lungs , but can also cause damage to also the intestines, pancreas, liver and kidneys) and from disease of liver, pancreas (pancreatitis) or gallbladder.

Malabsorption syndrome may also be seen in case of congenital defects like biliary atresia which is a serious liver disorder in which the one or more bile ducts that carry bile from the liver are absent, narrowed or blocked.

Symptoms

Its symptoms depend upon the cause behind it, the type of nutrients which are not absorbed, the duration and severity of the condition. The symptoms also occur from deficiency of unabsorbed nutrients. Hydronephrosis refers to swelling of the kidney that arises when urine is unable to drain properly from the kidney to the bladder. This results in its build up in the kidney. It mostly occurs in one kidney but may develop in both. Homeopathic remedies for hydronephrosis play a supportive role in managing cases of hydronephrosis and providing symptomatic relief. These should be taken only under the guidance of a homeopath, along with  conventional treatment.

Under normal conditions, urine is formed in the kidneys then it passes down through the ureter into the urinary bladder where it stores until it is voided out of the body through urethra. But in case the urine remains in the kidney, or back flows in the kidney, then there are chances of development of hydronephrosis.

Causes

Most times, hydronephrosis can result from any sort of blockage or obstruction in the urinary tract. Blockage mostly in the ureters (I.e. the tubes that connect kidneys to the bladder and drain urine from the kidneys) lead to this condition. This blockage usually arises from kidney stone, but can also arise from scar and blood clot. Due to blockage in the ureter the urine may backflow up in the kidney leading to its swelling. Other reasons  for blockage include a twist or bend in the meeting point of ureter and pelvis of kidney (this junction is known as ureteropelvic junction), an enlarged prostate (BPH – benign prostate hyperplasia) in men that can cause compression and obstruction of the urethra, tumours in pelvis can put pressure on the urinary system and pregnancy that may lead to compression of urethra from growing foetus. Sometimes it can also arise from ureter narrowing due to some injury or an infection.

Next it may occur from vesicoureteral reflux. In this reflux the muscular valve present at the junction of the urethra and bladder does not work correctly. This leads to backward flow of urine into the kidney. Normally urine flows down from kidney to ureter then bladder and urethra. When there occurs a backward flow of urine which is the wrong direction of urine flow then it causes problems with emptying of the kidney resulting in its swelling. Causes

Next they may be filled with somewhat viscous, serosanguineous fluid that contains pus and blood. The type of the contents of the cyst vary depending on if the cyst is infected or not.

The size can vary from a few mm to around 5 cm. These are round in shape and when touched these cyst feels smooth, mostly soft and movable. The small cyst are not painful and tender to touch. But when they are large they can be painful and cause pressure on the surrounding parts. They also become painful if they get infected, damaged or inflamed. 7. Lobelia Inflata

It is prepared from plant puke weed either with fresh plant when in flower and seed or its dried leaves. This plant belongs to the family lobeliaceae. This medicine has a tendency to resolve most obstinate cysts on the scalp. It either makes the cyst dissolve gradually or resolves it by aiding the discharge of its contents.

Some Other Valuable Medicines

In addition to above some of the other important medicines indicated for treating sebaceous cysts include Conium, Phytolacca, Calcarea Carb, Agaricus and Spongia.

Cysts are sac-like pockets or lumps that may be filled with  fluid, semi solid  material or air. Cysts are very common and the majority are benign (non cancerous.) The cysts can occur on any part of the body or under the skin. The size of cyst varies from being small to very large. Homeopathic medicines for cysts are used to treat  sebaceous cyst, cystic acne, Chalazion, ganglion, pilonidal cyst, knee cyst, breast cyst and cyst in male and female genitals.

They are of different types and mostly don’t cause any symptoms. But sometimes they may cause pain. When the lump is filled with pus it indicates an infection and is then called as an abscess.

Causes

There are various reasons behind cyst and the cause depends on the type of cyst. Some of the general reasons include blockages of ducts or sebaceous glands, infection, chronic inflammatory conditions, inherited diseases. In the majority of cases the cyst doesn’t cause pain. They turn painful if they are inflamed, infected or when they rupture.

Symptoms 

Some cyst like cysts of the skin, tissues under the skin, breast cyst, eyelid cyst, ganglion can be felt from outside on examination. But cyst in internal organs like lungs, liver may be asymptomatic and can be first discovered only after ultrasound, CT scan or MRI is done by a doctor for some other purpose. Most cysts are asymptomatic but some may lead to symptoms. Whether the symptoms appear or not depend on the size of cyst , location of cyst, type of cyst and if they are infected or not. For example in case of breast cyst pain, tenderness can occur in the breast. In case of  infection of cyst under skin there may occur discharge of thick yellow matter.  In ovarian cyst menstrual irregularities, pain while intercourse, pelvic pain can arise.

Types of Cysts

There are around 100 types of cyst. Some of the common ones are as follows : 

1. Epidermoid Cysts

They are small non cancerous lump that form under the skin  and are most common on the face, neck and trunk.  They grow slowly, can have no symptoms or it may have pain on touch. They appear as small round lumps on skin. Its other signs and symptoms include swelling, redness, tenderness. They may also discharge thick, yellow, offensive matter. 

2. Sebaceous Cyst 

These are  non cancerous skin cysts that commonly form on the face, neck, or torso. These are fluid or semi fluid filled bumps and are a little harder. Usually these are not painful but in case of large cysts they can be uncomfortable or severely painful and may cause pressure. It can get inflamed and become tender and the skin over the cyst may be red, warm. There may be drainage from the cyst having a foul smell.

3. Acne cyst (Cystic Acne)

These are severe types of acne in which painful, pus filled lumps form under the skin. It may rupture and leave scars.  Infection also spreads when these bursts. They occur from a sum of hormonal changes and trapping of  bacteria, oil, and dry skin cells in the skin pores. These form when this infection goes deep in the skin. They are painful, tender and itchy.  They can occur on the face, neck, chest, back.

4. Chalazion Cyst 

It is a small, painless lump that develops on the upper or lower eyelid. They occur from clogged meibomian glands. If infected they appear red, swollen and painful. 

5. Ganglion Cyst

It refers to a benign (non cancerous), round lump filled with jelly like material that most commonly develop along the tendons / joints. They commonly occur on wrists or hands but may also develop in the ankles and feet. They may become painful when they press on a nearby nerve.

6. Pilonidal Cyst

It is a sac in the skin that develops near the tailbone at the top of the area between the cleft of buttocks. It contains hair and skin debris. When it gets infected there appears  redness, swelling, soreness, pain in it and also discharge of pus that can have foul smell or blood.

7. Pilar Cyst

They are small fluid filled lumps that form under the skin. Though they can occur on any of the body surface but mostly (in 90% of the cases) occur on the scalp.  They are round or dome-shaped and are flesh coloured. 

8. Dermoid Cyst

It is sac-like growth near the skin surface and is a  congenital condition I.e. present at birth. They may contain hair , teeth, fluid, skin tissue, skin glands that produce sweat and oil. Mostly they occur on the face, lower back, inside the skull and in the ovaries. 

9. Baker’s Cyst 

Baker’s cyst is a fluid-filled cyst that develops behind the knee.  It is also known as popliteal cyst. In some of its cases no symptoms are present while in others  symptoms occur like knee pain, stiffness, limited range of motion of the knee. The symptoms may worsen after prolonged standing.

10. Breast Cyst

These are non cancerous fluid-filled lumps within the breast. They can be single or multiple in number. They may be painful or tender. They may  cause nipple discharge and the lump may increase in size and become tender before periods and decrease in size and become non tender after periods.

11. Cyst in Female Genital 

Ovarian Cyst 

These are fluid – filled sacs that develop in ovaries. They may develop in one or both the ovaries. These are common in women of child bearing age group.

They may not cause any symptoms in many cases. While in other cases they may cause symptoms like pain, abdominal bloating, pelvic pain before or during menses, pain while doing intercourse, pain in lower back, pain in thighs.

Bartholin Cyst

It is a small fluid filled near the vaginal opening due to blockage of the bartholin glands around the vaginal opening which secrete fluid for vaginal lubrication. It is painless but when infected there occurs redness , heat, swelling, pain, tenderness in the lump, discomfort while walking / sitting, pain during intercourse and fever.

Nabothian Cyst 

These are lumps which are filled with mucus that develops on the surface of the cervix. These don’t cause any pain or other symptoms and usually come into notice when a doctor examines the cervix for other problems. In case infection occurs in this cyst then discharge from vagina, inter menstrual bleeding or pelvic pain  may occur

Vaginal Cyst

They refer to lumps of  fluid, semi solid matter, air or pus that develop on or under the vaginal lining. They are asymptomatic but when enlarged can lead to pain, itching, discomfort during intercourse, and increase the chances of infection.

12. Cyst in Male Genitals

Epididymal Cyst

It is also known as spermatocele and refers to  a fluid – filled lump that forms on the epididymis (a coiled tube that stores sperms as they mature and carry from testes to the vas deferens). It doesn’t cause any symptoms but when it gets large it may cause heaviness, discomfort and pain in the affected testicle and fullness behind and above the testicle.

Apart from above the cyst can form in glands and various organs like the liver, lungs, kidneys, brain, pancreas, thyroid gland.
