Is mucus in your chest troubling you? Try out these Homeopathic remedies

Mucus is normally made in our body daily in certain amounts. Mucus produced by the respiratory system is called phlegm/sputum that keeps the respiratory tract moist and functions to save us from bacterial and viral infections by trapping infectious agents (like virus, bacteria). In case excessive mucus is produced in lungs, it causes chest congestion that could be indicative of a medical issue which needs to be addressed and treated. Some of the reasons for excessive mucus in the chest are bacterial and viral infections, common cold, flu, asthma, acid reflux, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), allergies, smoking and cystic fibrosis. It can be attended with cough (wet productive cough) and expectoration (spitting out mucus) produced in the respiratory tract. The color of the mucus varies from case to case depending on the cause behind it —breathing difficulty, wheezing, chest congestion, chest pain, fever, stuffy nose, sneezing, fatigue, body aches.

The phlegm expectorated may also vary in colour. Mostly clear phlegm indicates allergies, yellow or green mucus indicates a viral or bacterial infection and red mucus may arise from bronchitis, pneumonia, lung cancer.

Homeopathic medicines are highly effective to help clear mucus from the chest. These medicines act as natural expectorants which help to thin out and loosen the mucus from the chest making it easier to be coughed out. Viral or bacterial infection can lead to mucus in the chest. Infections such as cold, flu could be the main reasons. It arises when infection from the upper respiratory tract (nose, throat, sinuses) reaches lower respiratory tract (bronchial tubes, lungs). COVID -19 though does not lead to mucus in the chest but can cause pneumonia that causes chest congestion.

2. COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)

It refers to a group of lung diseases, chronic bronchitis and emphysema, that make breathing difficult for a person. Inflammation of bronchial tubes that carry air to and from the lungs is called bronchitis. It can lead to excessive mucus production in the chest. In emphysema, air sacs in lungs are damaged causing shortness of breath

5 Best Homeopathic Medicines for Varicocele

Varicocele refers to an abnormal enlargement of veins (pampiniform plexus) in the scrotum (a sac that holds the testicles). Varicocele may lead to discomfort but mostly it causes no symptoms. It is a very common problem and around 10 to 15 out of 100 males are found to suffer from this problem. Though not a life threatening problem, it can lead to low sperm count and male infertility.

Homeopathic Treatment Of Varicocele

Homeopathy is very effective in mild to moderate cases of Varicocele and prevents surgery in most cases. The medicines act at the root of problem to bring excellent results. They stimulate the self-healing mechanism of the body to aid natural cure. As the healing system of the body is strengthened, the disease is completely eradicated. The homeopathic medicines improve blood flow in veins and provide relief in pain and swelling of scrotum.

Homeopathic medicines for low sperm count

To deal with low sperm count which can occur in people suffering from Varicocele, the two most important homeopathic medicines are Radium Bromatum and X-ray. It is advised to consult a physician to take these medicines who will properly guide you regarding potency and repetition of medicines.

What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Varicocele?

Varicocele may not lead to any symptoms in many cases. However, some signs and symptoms may indicate Varicocele:

1. A lump in scrotum/swelling in the scrotum: In most cases of Varicocele, a lump or swelling is present in the scrotum. In case of small Varicocele, lump may be felt but may not be seen. In large Varicocele, the enlarged and twisted veins in scrotum are visible looking like a bag of worms.

2. Side: Varicocele mostly is one-sided. Either side can be involved, however, chances of left-sided Varicocele remain higher. Varicocle is 80-90 per cent times common in left testicle. In rare cases, both sides can be involved.

3. Pain: Varicocele is usually painless but in a few cases, might also cause pain. The pain in the scrotum is usually dull, throbbing-like but rarely sharp in nature. Increased temperature in testicles, increased pressure in scrotal veins and stretching of nerve fibers in the spermatic cord from dilated veins may be a contributing factor in causing pain. The pain may worsen as the day progresses, while standing or after physical exertion. Pain may get better by lying on the back. The testicles may feel heavy as well.

4. Size: The affected testicle may look smaller than the other.

5. Growth of left testicle at low pace during puberty.

6. Varicocele may lead to decreased sperm production, reduced sperm motility and quality of sperm might reduce too. Shape of the sperms may become abnormal. Infertility may also arise in some cases. Lastly it can cause atrophy/shrinkage of size of the testicles.

What are the causes behind Varicocele?

1. There are two testicular arteries that supply oxygenated blood to testicles and two testicular veins which carry deoxygenated blood from testicles to heart. There is a network of small veins called pampiniform plexus in the scrotum (which holds the testes) that carries deoxygenated blood from testicle to testicular vein. The reason behind Varicocele is not clear yet. However, it is thought to arise from pooling of the blood in the veins of pampiniform plexus. This happens when the valves inside the veins of spermatic cord, that allows one-way blood flow, do not work the right way as they should. It prevents blood from flowing properly in needed direction resulting in the back (reverse) flow of blood causing the veins with in scrotum to widen and enlarge resulting in Varicocele.

Spermatic cord is a tube that hangs testes in scrotum and contains testicular artery, lymphatic vessels, pampiniform plexus, nerves and vas deferens which carry sperms from testes to penis).

2. Deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot in one of the deep veins of body usually in legs), thrombosis (blood clot within blood vessel) of pampiniform plexus are some of the rare causes of Varicocele.

3. It usually affects males between 15-25 age group.

4. Tobacco smoking may increase risk of Varicocele.

Classification

Based on size and clinical examination these are classified as follows:

1. Large varicoceles: These can be easily detected by simple inspection (looking over) and appear like bag of worms.

2. Medium varicoceles: These are the ones that are detected by palpation with fingers even without any bearing down by patient.

3. Small varicoceles: These varicoceles can only be detected during strong bearing down (valsalva).

Another classification is as follows:

1. Pressure type Varicocele: In this spermatic vein fills with blood resulting in grade I Varicocele.

2. Shunt type Varicocele: In this intense build-up of blood damages spermatic vein and also other veins causing larger varicocele including grade II and III.

Grading system of size of Varicocele

Grade 0 – When varicocele is not detected physically and can only be seen on conducting an ultrasound of scrotum

Grade I – When varicocele is felt only on palpation (checking with fingers) during valsalva maneuver when standing

Grade II – when varicocele is palpable when standing even without valsalva maneuver but not visible

Grade III – When it cause visible scrotal deformity i.e. varicocele is visible through scrotal skin

Grading as per colour Doppler, given by Sarteschi, is as follows:

Grade I – In this reflux occur at groin level during valsalva. There is no testicular enlargement.  Deformity of scrotum is absent.

Grade II – Reflux occurs at the level of proximal part of pampiniform plexus only during valsalva. There is no testicular enlargement or deformity of scrotum.

Grade III – In this grade, reflux occurs in distal vessels at level of lower scrotum during valsalva. There is absence of testicular enlargement or scrotal deformity.

Grade IV – There occurs spontaneous reverse blood flow increasing during valsalva and in addition to this, scrotal deformity and testicular hypertrophy (enlargement) may also be there.

Grade V – There occurs reflux in dilated pampiniform plexus at rest that increases during valsalva and is always attended with testicular enlargement.

Complications

1. Impaired sperm production: A certain body temperature is required in testes for normal good quality sperm production, maturation and function. The heat in scrotum is approx. 5degree less than that of the belly. The pampiniform plexus works to cool down blood in testicular artery prior its entry to testicle. If there occur enlargement of veins in pampiniform plexus its normal functionality drops resulting in overheating in testes that affects normal production of sperms. When microscopic semen examination is done in case of Varicocele, stress pattern is seen. The sperm count becomes low, the sperms show poor motility and there is increase in number of abnormal sperms.

2. 4 out of 10 males having Varicocele face infertility.

3. Low testosterone production by Leydig cells in testes

4. In boys, varicocele may slow testicle growth during puberty

5. Atrophy of testes

What other conditions needs to be ruled out when making diagnosis of varicocele (differential diagnosis)?

1. Hydrocele: Swollen scrotum from collection of excessive fluid in the sheath (tunica vaginalis) surrounding a testicle.

2. Epididymitis: Inflamed epididymis (a coiled tube at the back of testicle that stores sperms while they mature and carries sperms from the testes to the vas deferens).

3. Spermatocele: cyst developing inside the scrotum

4. Trauma

5. Testicular and paratesticular tumour

6. Testicular torsion: An emergency condition in which spermatic cord that carries blood to testes rotates and twists

7. Inguinal hernia: Bulging of the contents of the abdomen through a weak spot in lower abdominal wall

Diagnosis and Investigations

1. Physical examination: A physician can make a clinical diagnosis by visually checking scrotum and by palpation (checking with fingers and hands of scrotum). In many cases, Varicocele cannot be seen or felt in lying down position. So the doctor may also examine scrotum in standing position.

He may ask you to stand up, take a deep breath in standing position and to hold the breath and bear down to do the scrotal examination and check for any enlarged veins in it. It is called as Valsalva maneuver.

2. Scrotal Doppler ultrasound: Doctor may recommend doppler ultrasound of scrotum to confirm diagnosis and rule out any other cause of the symptoms.

Veins of pampiniform plexus wider than 3mm with blood flow in the wrong direction during valsalva maneuver is indicative of Varicocele. If it is Varicocele, grading will also be done with its help. Ultrasound also checks the size of testicles.

3. In case of Varicocele on the right side, it is important to rule out any mass or tumour in abdomen that may be the cause. There is a possibility of renal cell carcinoma in case of isolated right-sided Varicocele. It could be occurring from vena cava obstruction from right renal cancer vein tumour thrombus. If suspected CT scan is recommended.

Though having a swelling and lump in scrotum might be indicative of Varicocele, as it is one of the reasons behind it, but just on this basis, it cannot be confirmed as Varicocele. Other possible reasons could be hydrocele, spermatocele, epididymitis, tumour, so a proper case study and investigations (mainly ultrasound of scrotum) is required to reach a proper diagnosis.

Why is Varicocele more common on left side?

The reason could be the different path followed by both internal spermatic veins. The right internal spermatic vein terminates directly in inferior vena cava having low pressure while the left-sided internal spermatic vein connects with left renal vein with comparatively high pressure. Additionally, the particular angle at the junction of the left internal spermatic vein and left renal vein contribute to high chances of left-sided Varicocele.

Do I need to undergo any investigation to diagnose Varicocele?

Yes, for confirmatory diagnosis of varicocele, a doppler ultrasound of scrotum is required.

Does Varicocele go away on its own without treatment?

Once Varicocele occurs, it does not go away onits own. It is always advised to seek medical treatment in such cases.

Top 7 Homeopathic Medicines for H.Pylori Infection

H. pylori is a bacterium named Helicobacter Pylori that causes stomach infection. In most cases, H. pylori remains in the body without causing any illness with the carrier being unaware of its presence and only in 20 per cent persons, it causes gastric issues and symptoms. Two gastric conditions that it can cause are gastritis (stomach inflammation) and peptic ulcers (open sores in the lining of the stomach or the initial part of the intestine called duodenum). H. pylori bacteria penetrates the lining of stomach and duodenum and starts multiplying. It secretes Urease enzyme which converts urea to ammonia. Ammonia helps this bacteria to survive in the stomach acid. With its multiplication, the lining of stomach and duodenum starts getting damaged resulting in gastritis or peptic ulcer.

Besides these, H. pylori infection is also a risk factor for stomach cancer. The infection is contracted through contaminated food and water. It is transmitted through direct contact with stool, vomit, saliva and other body fluids of an infected person. Few factors increases risk of this infection like unavailability of clean water, living in crowded environment, living with someone having this infection and living in a developing country as sanitary conditions are unhygienic.

Homeopathy is a wonderful healing science that treats H. pylori with natural and safe medicines. In H. pylori infection, homeopathy is the best alternative treatment. Homeopathy works especially well in the initial stages of H. pylori infection by providing symptomatic relief as well as preventing further progression of the infection. However, even in cases where pathological changes in the gastric tract such as gastric ulcers and gastritis appear, homeopathic medicines have a good scope of healing the H. pylori infection but only when the case is mild in intensity without any complications. Conventional mode treats this complaint with the help of antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors and histamine blockers. These may have certain side effects with prolonged use. However, homeopathic medicines for this infection are totally side effect free.

Homeopathic medicines stimulate the disease fighting mechanism of the body to fight the H. pylori infection. As the healing system of the body is strengthened the infection is eliminated. This is a gradual process for which medicine needs to be taken for several months together. The results vary from case to case as per the intensity of problem. Homeopathy is recommended when infection is mild to moderate in severity. But in severe cases like perforated ulcer or when bloody/ black tarry stool is present or in cases of stomach cancer, urgent medical help should be taken from conventional mode as homeopathy has limitation in helping such serious cases.

In homeopathic treatment of H. pylori infection the medicine prescription, its dosage, potency, repetition are decided individually for every case. The medicine is selected as per the peculiar symptoms presented by the sufferer after detailed case evaluation. Individualized prescription is key to get best results in these cases. So it is advised to always consult an expert homeopath for correct prescription and self-medication should be avoided. Homeopathic treatment as per guidelines of a homeopathic physician leads to great results in such cases.

Homeopathic medicines to treat H. pylori infection are derived from naturally occurring substances. Hence these are totally harmless and treat this condition in a very safe, gentle manner.

8 Best Homeopathic Medicines for Urticaria

Urticaria, also called hives or ‘nettle rash’, refers to raised, elevated, itchy bumps (wheals also called welts) on the skin surface that results from an allergic reaction to certain allergens. Hives can be accompanied by burning, and stinging pain.

There is excellent scope to treat urticaria in homeopathy with natural homeopathic medicines. Homeopathy proves helpful for treating hives that have occurred recently (acute) as well as the ones that have been there for longer duration (chronic). Homeopathic medicines initially help to clear the acute outbreak of wheals. These medicines help to heal the welts along with relief in itching, burning, and stinging sensations. Afterwards, these help to reduce the recurrence and intensity of urticaria gradually.

To overcome this complaint entirely, homeopathic remedies work on treating its root cause. The reason behind urticaria is a hyperactive immune system and overproduction of histamine in response to an allergen leading to welts on the skin and attending symptoms like itching, burning, and stinging. So, to completely cure this condition, homeopathy works in optimizing the immune system and lowering the overproduction of histamine naturally. With homeopathic treatment, the dependency on use of antihistamines and other conventional medicines is also reduced. Additionally, homeopathy has an advantage of being safe and natural with no unwanted adverse effects.

In homeopathy there is no particular medicine which can be used in every case of urticaria. Rather the most suitable medicine has to be selected from the list of different medicines for urticaria as listed in homeopathic therapeutics. Homeopathic medicines for treating urticaria are selected as per the individual characteristic symptoms, the type of urticaria, its trigger factors, and the worsening & relieving factors in its symptoms. It is best to get any case of urticaria evaluated by a homeopathic doctor and take medicines as prescribed and self-medication be avoided.

Homeopathy is recommended for mild to moderate cases of urticaria. But in severe cases and cases of anaphylaxis, urgent help from conventional systems should be taken as it is a life-threatening condition and homeopathy has limitations to help such cases.

What Are Its Causes?

The reason behind hives is usually an allergic reaction due to an overactive immune system. This reaction may occur from the consumption of certain food products or touching something to which a person is allergic to. Hives result when there is release of histamine (a chemical produced by immune system during an allergic reaction to get rid of allergen) from mast cells and basophils under the skin’s surface. This results in dilatation of blood vessels under the skin and inflammation. Following this, these vessels become leaky, and cause fluid to accumulate under the skin causing wheal formation, and swelling. People who have allergic tendencies are at risk of hives. Other than allergies, hives may also result from other non-allergic conditions like stress, tight clothes and infections. Many times, in over half of the cases, the exact causes and trigger factors cannot be ascertained.

What Triggers It?

The main triggers include consumption of foods such as eggs, nuts, and shellfish. Also certain medications like some antibiotics, NSAIDs, even exercises, scratching, alcohol, insect bites may also trigger it. Other triggers include sun exposure, stress, extremes of heat or cold, some intestinal parasites, animal dander, pressure on skin, dust mites, water application, certain plants, such as poison ivy. In some cases, viral infections (like common cold, mononucleosis, hepatitis), and bacterial infections (urinary tract-infection, strep throat) may trigger it. Sometimes it can arise in patients who have thyroid and Celiac’s disease (gastric disorder in which an immune response in the small intestine is triggered from eating gluten that damages the small intestine).

What Are Its Signs And Symptoms?

Wheals: It is the major sign of urticaria. It refers to raised, elevated, smooth-surfaced, itchy bumps on the skin with clearly defined edges. They are itchy. Also, burning, and stinging sensation may appear.

Anaphylaxis is a severe life threatening condition and thus it should be treated urgently.

Some of the predisposing factors for corns are:

1.Wearing shoes that are too tight or too loose

Complications

If corns are left untreated,  they may grow in size. These may become painful making walking difficult. Secondly, there are chances of corn becoming infected. The redness of corn along with the oozing of fluid may be indicative of infection. If someone has some medical condition like diabetes which results in poor blood flow to feet, then the chance of complications increases.

Signs and Symptoms of Pilonidal Cyst / Sinus

Sometimes Pilonidal Cysts do not give out any signs/symptoms. However, if it gets infected following signs and symptoms may appear:

1. A dimple or swelling, and pain in the cleft of the buttocks. The size of the cyst may be small or large. However, the cleft of the buttocks is the major location where ‘Pilonidal Cyst’ forms, rarely it may form in some other areas as well like the armpit, between fingers, navel, cheek, or genital area.

2. When this dimple gets infected a cyst is formed (a fluid-filled sac) that may turn into an abscess (pus-filled lump)

3. Redness, itching, and tenderness in the swollen area

4. Discomfort while sitting also arises from this cyst

5. Formation of sinus tract/holes in the skin. The sinus tract is a channel that starts from the source of infection and opens on the surface of the skin. Drainage of pus or blood from the ‘Pilonidal Sinus.’ The pus may be white or yellow or may have an offensive odour

6. Hair protruding from the affected area may be seen

7. Nausea, tiredness, and low-grade fever may also appear along with the above features in some cases.

Pilonidal Cyst And Its Causes

The exact cause of the Pilonidal Cyst is not clear. But a theory states that initially, loose hair penetrates the skin of the cleft between the buttocks. Friction (as from riding a bicycle) or rubbing makes the hair go deep into the skin. The body, considering this hair to be a foreign article, forms a cyst around it to push it out from the skin. If left untreated this cyst may lead to an abscess (pus-filled lump) or it may break open, and form a tract that emerges on the surface of the skin (which is called a Pilonidal Sinus). However, as per another theory, the trauma to the area between the buttocks is what may create this cyst.

Risk factors

Though anyone can get a Pilonidal Cyst but there are certain factors that increase the risk of a Pilonidal Cyst as follows:

1. Excessive body hair (especially thick and stiff) on the back

2. Inactive lifestyle, excessive sitting (as office workers, drivers) that puts pressure on the coccyx area

3. Obesity

4. The age group most prone to developing a Pilonidal Cyst is between 20 – 35 years

5. Pilonidal Sinus is more common in men compared to women. Men are three to four times more likely to get Pilonidal Cyst than women.

6. Having a family history of Pilonidal Cyst (if thick, rough body hair runs in family)

7. Having congenital Pilonidal dimple

8. Excessive sweating
