7 Best Natural Homeopathic Medicines to Treat Gout

homeopathic medicine for gout

Gout is an inflammatory joint disease that arises due to increased uric acid levels in the blood. Though any joint in the body can be affected by gout but the joint at the base of the great toe has a higher chance to be affected in majority of cases. Normal uric acid levels in blood are 3.5 to 7.2 mg/dL.  Uric acid level more than this indicates hyperuricemia (high uric acid). Increased uric acid is not a disease and not dangerous. However, if excess uric acid levels lead to the formation of crystals in between the joints, gout can develop. In some people, excess uric acid levels also lead to the formation of kidney stones.  Please remember, not everybody who have high levels of uric acid, develop gout. High level of uric acid in blood without any symptoms is termed asymptomatic hyperuricemia.

Homeopathic medicines offer a very effective treatment for various joint complaints, including gout. These medicines can be a big boon for all those who suffer from high uric acid and gout. Homeopathic medicines, along with proper dietary management, can lead to remarkable recoveries in cases of gout. Homeopathic medicines for gout help relieve symptoms like pain, tenderness, stiffness and also reduce the associated inflammation and swelling in joints. These medicines work by reducing overproduction of uric acid in the body and, where need be, by accelerating the removal of this waste product through the kidneys. In mainstream medicine medicines, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti – inflammatory drugs) and corticosteroids are used to treat gout. These medicines give temporary relief and also have a tendency to cause side effects with prolonged use. On the other hand, homeopathic medicines do not have any adverse effects and give long-term relief and cure with regular course of medication as guided by a homeopathic physician.

Homeopathic medicines offer help in both acute and chronic gout cases. Initially, they treat an acute attack of gout. Following this, the homeopathic treatment helps to treat the chronic tendency of gout.  With these medicines, there is a gradual decrease in intensity and frequency of gout attacks. And with further treatment, a permanent cure occurs in most of the cases.

After medicine selection, the potency, dosage and repetition is finalised as per every individual case. So, it is advised to get every case of gout evaluated by a homeopath for correct prescription and best results. Signs And Symptoms Of Gout

Gout symptoms occur due to the deposition of uric acid crystals in the joint spaces and or in the connective tissue of the joints. The main signs and symptoms are as follows:

1. Pain in joints: Gout is a very painful condition, mainly affecting the metatarsal– phalangeal joint at the base of the big toein most cases. Gout affecting big toe joint is named podagra. Pain occurs suddenly and in most cases, joint pain starts during the night and reaches maximum within 12 hours of its beginning.

 Joints affected

Gout mainly affects the joint (metatarsal–phalangeal joint) at the base of the big toe but it can affect other joints as well. The other joints that can be affected by gout include ankles, heels, knees, wrists, elbows, fingers, and shoulders.

Duration of a gout attack

One episode of gout can last from 3 days to two weeks. In between two gout attacks, no symptoms occur at all.

2. Swelling, redness and heat in joints

3. Tenderness of the joint: Joint is painful even to slightest touch, even the little contact with bedsheet seems unbearable.

4. Stiffness of joint and limited range of motion of joint

5. Tophi: Deposits of hard, painless deposits of uric acid, called tophi can appear as lumps under the skin and around the joints from long-standing increase in uric acid levels.

Causes And Risk Factors

The main cause of gout is an increase in uric acid levels in the blood.

The following factors increase risk of gout

1. Dietary factors: Eating food products rich in purines tend to raise the levels of uric acid in the blood. Some foods that are high in purines include meat, fish, seafood, shrimp, shellfish, beans, dried mushrooms, and spinach. Besides excessive alcohol, intake is strongly linked with an increased risk of gout. Drinking sugar-sweetened beverages are also linked with gout.

2. Some medical conditions make a person susceptible to gout. These include kidney disease, metabolic syndrome (It is a group of conditions including hypertension, abdominal obesity, and insulin resistance and abnormal lipid levels), psoriasis, haemolytic anemia, diabetes and hypertension.

3. A positive family history of gout increases risk

4. Obesity also increases susceptibility

5. Males are at higher risk of developing gout as compared to females. In females, chances are more of developing gout after menopause.

6. The use of certain medicines, like thiazide diuretics, is linked with gout attacks. Some other medicines associated with gout attack are aspirin, beta blockers, immunosuppressive drugs ciclosporins and excessive use of vitamin D supplements.

7. Recent surgery or a physical trauma

Pathophysiology

In our body, when purines (present in certain food and drinks) break, then uric acid is formed. This uric acid is expelled via kidneys in urine.  Gout occurs when there is an increase in the uric acid levels in the blood. Uric acid levels increase either due to its overproduction (in 10% of cases), or decreased elimination of the uric acid from the body by the kidney (this is cause in 90% of the cases). As a result of increased uric acid levels in blood, uric acid crystals (known as as monosodium urate crystals) start accumulating in joints and soft tissue around it.  These are sharp, needle-like crystals that trigger an inflammatory response, resulting in gout.

Complications Of Gout

1. A person may get recurrent attacks of gout each year

2. Joint erosion, damage and destruction

3. Formation of tophi (nodules under skin from deposits of urate crystals) that can form in any area like fingers, feet, hands and Achilles tendon. Tophi become tender during gout attack, at other times, are entirely painless.

4. In some cases, urate crystals tend to accumulate in urinary tract, leading to kidney stones.

Diagnosis And Investigations

1. Uric acid levels in blood: It is the most common test recommended in case of gout in which levels of serum uric acid are in blood are found to be elevated in gout. But its role in confirming gout is limited, as it is seen that many people have high uric acid level in blood but do not have gout, while some people have gout but their blood uric acid levels are normal.

2. Synovial fluid test: In doubtful cases, this test is suggested as it gives confirmatory diagnosis of gout. In this test, fluid from the affected joint is drawn with needles and checked under microscope. In case of gout, urate crystals are seen in this fluid.

3. Ultrasound of joint: It may help to check urate crystals in joint.

4. X-ray of joint: It may not be helpful in acute cases but in chronic cases, it may show joint erosions.

Top 8 Homeopathic Remedies for Urethral Stricture Treatment

Urethral stricture refers to narrowing of the urethra due to scar formation. The urethra is the lowermost part of the urinary tract through which urine passes out from the urinary bladder. Urethral stricture is more common in males than in females.

Homeopathy, which is a completely natural science of healing, can be very beneficial in the treatment of urethral stricture. In the beginning of homeopathic treatment, these medicines work to provide wonderful relief in signs and symptoms of urethral stricture, like straining to urinate, weak / split urine stream, frequent urge to urinate, interrupted urine and ensure that passage of urine becomes normal again and there is no pain in the process. Once the symptoms are alleviated, it aims to dissolve the scar in the urethra for long-term recovery.

In mainstream medicine, frequent dilatation and surgical intervention is often recommended in cases of urethral stricture. These procedures carry a risk of many side effects. Additionally, they offer temporary, short-term relief as there is always a chance that the stricture appears again. On the other hand, homeopathy treats it very gently and offers long-term relief without any adverse aftereffects. In many cases of mild to moderate intensity, one can get away with surgical intervention too. The earlier the homeopathic treatment is started, the higher are the chances that surgery won’t be required in such cases.

Homeopathy works as per the Law of Similimum, which means while selecting the homeopathic medicine for any individual case, a medicine is chosen which matches most closely with the symptoms of the individual. In urethral stricture cases as well, this law is applied. Once the medicine is finalised, the potency and dosage of that medicine is also decided as per homeopathic principles. The potency and dosage vary from case to case as per the age of the person, the intensity of symptoms and chronicity of the complaint.

Homeopathy is 100 % safe for treating urethral stricture as it uses medicines prepared from natural substances which do not have any chemicals or toxins in them.

The bladder does not empty in one go and the flow of urine starts then stops and starts again several times (interrupted urine stream). At times, urine is passed drop by drop. The patient always feels as if some urine is still left behind in the bladder. Dribbling of urine occurs after passing urine. Clematis helps in establishing the proper flow of urine in a stream. Causes Of Urethral Stricture

The main cause behind urethral stricture is scar formation within urethra from an injury or instrumentation or surgery. The causes are enumerated as follows:

1. Trauma or injuryto the urethra: The trauma may follow any hit or blow on the urethra/ trauma to pelvis. Falling on the bar of a bicycle is very common injury that can lead to urethral stricture.

2. Instrumentation: Endoscopy, catheter introduction

3. Surgical operations (Post-operative Urethral Stricture): It  may follow a prostate operation, kidney stone removal surgery, hypospadias surgery (to correct urethral opening position in penis)

Homeopathic Medicines for Migraine

Migraine is a disorder characterized by headache, specifically affecting one side of the head (i.e. unilateral side). Migraine headaches are mostly throbbing or pulsating in nature. Common accompanying symptoms are nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light, and noise.

Homeopathy carries an excellent scope for treating migraine.  Homeopathic treatment is required in two phases to bring relief, especially in migraine. First, during acute migraine episodes, homeopathic medicines help to relieve pain in the head and its attending symptoms like nausea and vomiting. Once acute pain subsides, the treatment should not be stopped. Relief from acute pain is the first phase of treatment. The treatment is required further, which becomes the second phase of treatment, where homeopathy works in treating the chronic tendency of migraine. These medicines help to prevent the recurrence of migraine and also reduce one’s dependency on medicines. Homeopathic medicines do not work superficially but go to the core of the problem and focus on rooting it out in the second phase of treatment.

Safe option with zero side effects

Homeopathy treats migraine with zero side effects as the medicines used for treatment are of natural origin. Homeopathic medicines work in a very natural and safe way. The basic approach of these medicines is to stimulate or boost the body’s self-healing mechanism to a level where the body can heal itself naturally. Homeopathic medicines are safe to use among people of all age groups.

The time it will take to cure any case of migraine depends on several factors. These include the duration of the complaint, its frequency and severity. In addition, the response of the person’s body to homeopathic medicines decides for how long the homeopathic treatment needs to be continued for a complete cure.

Individualized approach

The basic underlying fundamental principle of homeopathy is treating every case following an individualized approach to get the best results. Homeopathy works wonders only when the medicine is prescribed as per the characteristic key symptoms in every individual case and not just as part of a hit-and-trial method. For example, Belladonna, though the most often recommended medicine for migraine, might not help in all cases. A case where sun exposure triggers headache might need the medicine Glonoine, and in a case where nausea and vomiting are marked with headache, medicine Iris Versicolor may be recommended. Cases with ‘aura’ symptoms may need some other medicine. So, proper consultation from a homeopathic physician with thorough knowledge of the subject is required who will prescribe medicines after detailed evaluation of the case.

Top 10 Homeopathic Medicines for Migraine

The top-ranked homeopathic medicines for migraine are Belladonna, Glonoinum, Iris Versicolor, Epiphegus, Spigelia, Sanguinaria Canadensis,  Nux Vomica, Kali Phos, Natrum Muriaticum and Gelsemium.

1. Belladonna – Top Grade Medicine For Migraine

Though there are numerous medicines available in homeopathy to manage migraine, Belladonna occupies the top position. I can bet this medicine to relieve migraine headache. It is a brilliant medicine to help relieve headaches with intense throbbing, pulsating type of pain.  Beside, there is a feeling of  extreme fullness in the head along with a sensation as if the head would burst. Light seemingly worsens the headache. Noise may get unbearable. In some cases, exposure to cold air may trigger a migraine episode. In others, a head bath with cold water can bring on migraine headache. Manual pressing of the head is the only way one can get some relief.

When to use Belladonna?

This medicine can be used when there is throbbing/pulsating  (beating with strong regular rhythm) headache with a sensation as if the head would burst.

How to use Belladonna?

This medicine can be used in 30C potency twice or thrice a day as per the intensity of pain.

2. Glonoinum – For Congestive Headache

Glonoinum, though mentioned at second position, is as effective as Belladonna for treating migraine with fullness and congestion in head. Those needing it feel excessive blood rush into the head. The head feels very large, as if it would burst. Patients who suffer are seen holding their heads tightly. The eyeballs seem to protrude. Extreme heaviness in the head along with unbearable heat occurs. Uncovering the head relieves the headache. Headache gets better with sleep. However, walking may worsen the headache. Apart from congestive headaches, Glonoinum is a leading medicine administered for headache related to migraine triggered by sun exposure.

When to use Glonoinum?

The use of Glonoine is highly recommended to manage congestive, bursting type of headache triggered by sun exposure.

3. Iris Versicolor – For Migraine With Nausea, Vomiting Or Acidity

To manage headache with nausea, vomiting and acidity no medicine does a better job than Iris Versicolor. Though some other medicines can be extremely useful, Iris Versicolor is the first choice. It is best suited when acid reflux leads to a headache. In cases needing it, vomiting of acidic, sour, bitter nature is observed. Bitter, acrid belching with heartburn (intense burning behind the sternum) and burning in the throat is well marked. Other than heartburn, burning may be noted in any part of the alimentary canal. It is used when a slightest deviation from routine work brings on a migraine attack. Although it works for migraine on both sides of the head, comparatively better results are seen when the headache occurs on the left side. A peculiar accompanying symptom is increased saliva with constant inclination to spit.

Use of Epiphegus is especially suggested for migraine attacks triggered by either mental or physical exertion.

In most cases, the pain begins in the back of the head (occipital region), extends upwards and settles over the left eye. The pain is intense, throbbing and pulsating. A sensation of a tight band around the head is felt. Stooping seems to worsen the headache. Severe pain in the eyeballs may be an accompanying factor. Eye movement worsens this pain.

Causes

1. Migraines are believed to arise due to brain changes affecting nerve communication, and are also thought to originate from brain changes affecting blood vessels. Some believe that both these factors play a role. These changes send pain signals to the brain.

2. Other than these, decrease in the level of brain chemical serotonin may be a causing factor, the research for confirmation of the role of serotonin in migraines is still ongoing.

3. Genetics is also thought to play a role in migraine as persons having migraine often have a family history of migraine. About two thirds of the migraine cases have a family history of migraine. If a person has one parent with migraine then he/she has 50 percent chance to suffer the same. Both the parents suffering from migraine increases  the risk to 75 per cent in their children.

4. In some cases psychological conditions like anxiety, depression, are linked with migraine

Symptoms of Postnasal Drip

Postnasal Drip is characterized by excessive mucus production by the nasal mucosa. This mucus then collects in the back of the nose or the throat, giving rise to:

1. Sensation of mucus falling from the back of the nose

2. Hawking and an urge to clear the throat frequently

3. A sore throat, and chronic cough

4. Hoarse voice

5. Bad breath

6. Painful ear infections

Causes of PND

It can be caused by multiple reasons which are as follows:

1. Cold, & flu: These viral infections affect the nose and the throat. Among these, flu is more severe than cold. These can cause PND along with other main symptoms of nasal congestion, nasal discharge, sneezing, sore throat, body aches, and fever.

2. Sinusitis: It refers to swelling and inflammation of air-filled spaces within the skull. It can lead to PND with other symptoms of headache, nasal discharge, nasal blockage, pain/ tenderness around eyes, cheeks, nose, forehead, sore throat, and cough.

3. Nasal allergy (allergic rhinitis): It refers to a response to a specific allergen (like dust mites, pollens) causing sneezing, runny nose, itchy watery eyes, stuffy nose. PND may accompany these symptoms.

4. Non allergic rhinitis: In this form of rhinitis, symptoms similar to allergic rhinitis appear but there is no allergic reaction.

5. DNS (deviated nasal septum): A condition in which the wall that divides nasal cavity into two halves is displaced to one side. As a result, one side of the nasal cavity becomes small, hindering mucus drainage causing PND.

6. Gastric reflux: The backflow of stomach acid from the stomach into the food pipe, throat and mouth

7. An object stuck in the nose in children can be one of the causes

8. Some medicines: Medicines that help treat high blood pressure, and birth control pills can trigger PND

9. Pregnancy

10. Swallowing disorder: In the case of swallowing disorders, the root cause lies not in excess production of mucus but rather in inadequate clearance of the throat

11. Weather change, cold weather, dry air, and eating some food items like highly spicy food

Pathophysiology

Our nose and throat produce small amounts of mucus continuously. This mucus has three functions. Firstly, it keeps the nasal membrane moist, secondly, it helps trap and filter any inhaled foreign matter (like virus and bacteria) and thirdly it fights infection. This mucus is being swallowed unaware by everyone. But when due to whatever reason the production of mucus increases, it starts to accumulate in the back of the throat. When excessive or thick mucus drips down the throat from the back of the nose, then only one becomes aware of it. The irritants in the mucus can activate receptors in the respiratory tract resulting in protective cough.
