Alcoholic liver disease refers to damage to the liver that result from excessive alcohol drinking for years. Alcohol abuse for years can result in fat build up, swelling, inflammation or scarring (cirrhosis) in the liver. It is a serious issue and can be fatal if not treated well in time. The damage to liver in this occurs from a chemical acetaldehyde which is produced from breakdown of alcohol in the body. Stages of Alcoholic Liver Disease 

It has three stages:

First stage – Alcoholic fatty liver disease is the first stage. In this there occurs a collection of fat in the liver. Generally no symptoms appear in this stage. Complete stoppage of alcohol drinking can reverse this stage.

Second stage – The second stage is acute alcoholic hepatitis. In this swelling and inflammation appears in the liver. In mild cases it can be reversed with treatment but in severe cases it can proceed to liver failure.

Third stage – Thhis is the most serious and severe stage in which liver cirrhosis occurs. Cirrhosis means scarring in the liver. The liver damage is permanent in this stage and it can not be reversed but complete stoppage of alcohol intake can prevent further damage. Liver failure can occur when there is severe damage from liver cirrhosis.

Altitude sickness refers to a group of symptoms that can arise in a person from going at higher altitudes too quickly. It happens due to low levels of oxygen at high altitudes. People who live at high altitudes are adapted to low oxygen saturation, but persons who travel to higher altitudes than their body is used to can develop altitude sickness. Climbing, hiking, driving at higher altitudes too rapidly or climbing at too high altitudes poses a risk of it because the body doesn’t get enough time then to adjust to the decreased oxygen levels. A person is said to have altitude sickness if he gets a headache and at least one other attending symptoms of altitude sickness at a height of 8000 ft. Classification of Altitude Sickness

It is classified into three types:

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) :

It is the  most common and the mildest form of altitude sickness. Its symptoms include dizziness, headache, nausea and muscle aches.

High – Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE):

This form occurs if AMS is not treated well in time and it persists. In this type fluid fills the brain leading to its swelling and hindering its normal functioning. This fluid leaks from blood vessels into the brain that occurs from low oxygen levels resulting in brain swelling. This type needs immediate treatment because it can cause death if not urgently treated. Its symptoms include intense drowsiness, confusion, disorientation, fever, trouble walking and hallucinations (a symptom in which a person sees or hears things not present actually in reality

High – Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)

In this type excessive fluid builds up in the lungs and hinders its normal function. This type is also life threatening and if not treated immediately can cause death. The symptoms of this type are difficulty breathing even at rest, blueness of skin or lips (cyanosis), persistent intense cough, chest tightness / congestion, rattling or gurgling noises in lungs when breathing, confusion and  weakness.

Erysipelas is a bacterial skin infection of the upper layer of the skin. The bacteria causing it is mostly Group A Streptococcus bacterium. Another name for this condition is St. Anthony’s Fire because the rash occurring in it has a fiery appearance. Erysipelas is a skin disorder similar to cellulitis in which an infection occurs in the lower layers of the skin. Use of homeopathic remedies for erysipelas is recommended when the signs and symptoms are mild to moderate in intensity and no complications are present.

Causes 

It occurs from entry of bacteria in the skin through some cuts or sores on the skin.  The bacteria commonly causing it is Group A Streptococcus bacteria. Cuts on the skin, insect bites or animal bites, ulcers on the skin and surgical incisions are some of the injuries that raises risk of developing this condition. Persons suffering from certain skin conditions like eczema (a condition characterised by red, inflamed, itchy skin), impetigo (contagious, superficial infection of the skin mainly affecting infants and children), athlete’s foot (fungal infection of feet), psoriasis (an autoimmune skin condition in which red, inflamed, itchy scaly patches, forms on the skin) that cause breaks in the skin also makes them prone to erysipelas.

Some other health conditions that increase chances of this infection includes diabetes, issues with blood circulation, improper working of the veins or the lymphatic vessels. Lastly alcoholism, obesity, weak immune system and use of injection of drugs like heroin are some factors raising its risk. 

Though it can affect people of any age but is common in infants and elderly people above the age of 60 years.

Signs and Symptoms 

Initially before the beginning of the skin rash there occur fever, chills, shivering, fatigue, feeling unwell, loss of appetite, vomiting and headache. It develops within 48hrs of infection.  Afterwards the skin gets affected. Swollen patches may occur on the skin. These look shiny and have raised edges. It feels warm, is painful and can also be tender to touch. In severe cases blisters (fluid-filled eruptions) or petechiae (pinpoint red or purple spots) appear on the affected skin area. The skin rash occurs mostly on the face and the legs. In the case of the face, the nose and cheeks are commonly involved. The lymph nodes can also get swollen and lymphedema may occur.

Complications

If not treated rightly and in proper time then there is risk of some complications. These includes abscess (pus collection), gangrene (tissue death from loss of blood supply), blood clots, bone infections, joint infection. It is an effective medicine for managing cases in which swelling accompanies the skin rash. Swelling is present with red stripes on skin. 4. Graphites – When Blisters Discharge Sticky Fluid

This medicine works well in these cases when there are blisters on skin that discharge sticky, glutinous fluid. It works best when erysipelas start from the forehead and thereafter spread to the scalp and neck. Apart from this it is also indicated when erysipelas begin in the face and then gradually spread over the whole body. 

5. Sulphur – For Painful Erysipelas

Use of this medicine is recommended for managing painful erysipelas. For using it the pain can be with throbbing, pulsating, shooting or stinging type.  A chief characteristic symptom for using it is erysipelas beginning from the right ear and then spreading over the face. Another symptom that calls its use is erysipelas of the face mainly in eyelids, nose, and left sided ear. The erysipelas migrating from place to place also indicates its use. Next symptom where this medicine is indicated is erysipelas in the legs and feet. Its last indicating symptom is large and shining swelling of the fingers.

6. Lachesis – When it Affects Left Side of Face

This medicine is prominent for managing cases in which rash occurs on the left side of the face. In cases needing it the rash can begin near to the left side of the nose and then extend up and down to the left side face. In some cases the eruption occurs beneath the left eye. This area appears red, swollen and is accompanied with itching. The lower lid is swollen with this. The rash on the face has burning and itching where it is required. Headache may be present along with above symptoms. Other than these Lachesis is indicated when the face is red bloated with heat and swelling that assume purplish hue. Next it is beneficial for cases in which the blisters contain dark coloured fluid. Apart from above open ulcers on the leg on the left side attended with erysipelas also indicates its use. Lastly it is well indicated medicine for managing erysipelas in old people.

7. Pulsatilla – When it Affects Face, Thighs, Buttocks

It is prepared from a plant named Pulsatilla Nigricans commonly known as wind flower or pasque flower. The family of this plant is ranunculaceae. It is used when erysipelas are present on thighs, buttocks and face. In case of face stinging, pricking pain is present. In such cases peeling of the skin also occurs. 

8. Cantharis – For Erysipelas with Blisters

This medicine is significant to manage cases of erysipelas with blisters. The blisters are large in size where it is required. These may exude much watery matter. Burning sensation and pain is also there in them. Other than this it also works well in cases where skin inflammation is there followed by prickling. Another symptom for using it is inflammation of the dorsum of the nose that spread to both cheeks. This is followed by skin peeling.

9. Thuja – For Facial Erysipelas with Swelling

It is a natural medicine prepared from fresh twigs of a plant Thuja Occidentalis having the common name Arbor Vitae. This plant belongs to family coniferae. It is indicated for cases in which the face is affected. The face appears red and hot. The burning redness is prominent on the cheeks. The affected skin tends to peel off when washed.

Sarcoidosis is a disease in which tiny clumps of inflammatory cells (granulomas) grow in various organs of the body (most commonly the lungs and lymph nodes) causing its inflammation. Other parts affected include eyes, skin, heart, liver, brain, kidneys, bones, muscles, joints and spleen. Homeopathy for sarcoidosis should be considered only for supportive treatment, with conventional treatment being necessary for recovery or to reduce the severity of the symptoms. 

Causes

The exact cause of sarcoidosis is yet unknown. But it is thought to be arising from an autoimmune response. In this case the body’s immune system from a misdirected response to certain substances starts to destroy the body’s healthy tissue. But what triggers this response is not clear. As per few researches, bacteria, viruses, dust, chemicals or the body’s own proteins could be the trigger factor. The factors could make the immune system react abnormally that result in collection of immune cells in a pattern of inflammation called granulomas in various organs in persons predisposed to it genetically. The function of the organ in which the granulomas form gets affected. 

Any person can develop it but a person having a family history of sarcoidosis is at more risk of developing it. The chances of its development are little more in women as compared to men. The symptoms mostly appear in people between the ages of 20 and 60 years of age. 

Symptoms

In many cases no signs and symptoms arise. When these occur they depend on which organ is affected by it. In some cases the symptoms develop gradually and remain for many years. While in other cases the symptoms arise all of sudden and also get well quickly.

The general symptoms include fatigue, weight loss, swollen painful joints and swollen lymph nodes. When lungs are affected then the symptoms that arise include dry cough, chest pain, wheezing and shortness of breath. When it affects eyes then the signs and symptoms that may appear include pain in eye, blurring of vision, redness of eyes, dry eyes, itchy eyes, burning in eyes and sensitivity to light. In case of skin involvement there occur skin rash with bumps on skin mainly having red or reddish-purple colour mostly on the ankles or shin bone. These are warm and tender to touch. Other signs include dark or light coloured skin than usual, nodules under skin usually around scar tissue, sores on  nose, cheeks and ears. Next the symptoms from heart involvement includes chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, irregular heartbeat, fainting and edema .

Complications 

Many long term complications can arise in these cases. Firstly, it is related to lungs where it can cause fibrosis which means permanent scarring that makes breathing difficult. In these cases it may also lead to pulmonary hypertension. Secondly in case of eyes it can cause cataract (clouding of lens of the eye) and damage to the retina leading to blindness. 

Next when it affects the heart it may cause disruption of blood flow and abnormal heartbeat.  Other than this in case of involvement of kidneys it may cause kidney stones, hinder kidney function and can lead to kidney failure. Lastly when it affects the nervous system it may lead to paralysis of facial muscles.

Croup which is also known as “Laryngotracheobronchitis” is an infection of the upper airway that occurs in younger children. 1. Viral Croup

Most times initially viral infection occurs that causes croup and is followed by secondary bacterial infection in these cases. The bacteria involved includes Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Haemophilus influenzae.

3. Spasmodic Croup

This type is believed  to arise from allergies like from pollens or from reflux (in which the stomach contents back flow in the food pipe). It occurs all of sudden mostly in the middle of night. Fever doesn’t occur commonly in this type.

Symptoms

It usually begins as a cold. Initially there occurs runny nose, sore throat and mild fever. If the inflammation and this condition progresses, then there occurs the next set of symptoms. Albuminuria refers to a condition in which albumin (a type of protein) abnormally passes in the urine. Albumin is a major type of protein made in the liver that normally circulates in the blood. Homeopathic medicines for albuminuria mainly play a supportive role in managing such cases.

This parasitic disease is classified depending on the body area affected by these worms. 

1. Firstly, it includes lymphatic filariasis that affects lymphatic system and lymph nodes and causes elephantiasis. The worms that cause it are – Wuchereria bancrofti (most common cause) , Brugia malayi and Brugia timori. 

In case of lymphatic filariasis a disease called elephantiasis mainly occurs. In this disease the filarial worm lodges in the lymphatic system causing its damage and blockage and hinders the flow of lymph through lymphatic vessels. This results in backup of the lymphatic fluid, which causes swelling. 

Many people having this infection may not show symptoms in initial stages. In others it causes lymphedema build up of fluid in soft tissue of limbs from blockage in lymph system. Elephantiasis occurs when the filarial worms gets lodged in lymphatic system and blocks flow of lymph. In people whom symptoms appear mainly include swelling and abnormal enlargement of the legs, arms, breasts or genitals (mainly scrotum in males and vulva in females). Both the feet and legs are involved in cases that require it. The lower part of the thigh is also affected along with the above. Other than this it is also indicated when elephantiasis affects scrotum in males (causing swelling called hydrocele). 

3. Elaeis Guineensis – For Swelling and Hardening of Skin

This medicine is prepared from the fruit of a plant called Aouara or Avoira. It belongs to family palmaeceae. It is well indicated for these cases when there is swelling, and hardening of the skin. Most times it is indicated for swelling of the left leg. This leg is also rough and itchy. Skin is also thickened. 

4. Arsenic Album – To Manage Swelling of Lower Limbs and Pain

Arsenic Album is a useful medicine to manage swelling of the lower limbs and pain in such cases. On feet along with swelling hardness and burning of the skin can be there where it is required. Along with this sometimes on the skin brownish white spots may be present. The skin is dry and rough and looks very dirty. Other than above its use is also considered to manage ulcer on leg. Here ulcer covered with grey crust and an inflamed margin is the key feature to use it. Sometimes around the edges of ulcers pus filled eruptions may also be present.

5. Petroleum – For Cases with Rough, Thick, Hard Skin

This is a very beneficial remedy for managing conditions where skin is very rough, thick and hard. It also looks very dirty. Cracks can also be present on the skin.  brown spots on the skin can be present too. The skin is very sensitive and painful in most cases that require its use. Along with this there is marked swelling of the leg on the left side. It may have a purplish color and ooze watery substance. On drying large scabs forms on it. Itching and burning are also felt in it.

6. Merc Sol – For Managing Ulcers on the Skin 

This medicine offers help to manage skin ulcers. In cases needing it there are irregular shaped ulcers with undefined borders  on the skin. They are painful also . Mostly pricking or cutting type of pain is felt in them. Sometimes there may be bleeding from these ulcers also.

7. Natrum Carb – Another Medicine to Manage Ulcer on Skin

It is also valuable medicine to manage skin ulcers. Swelling is marked with ulcers where it is indicated. Burning sensation may be present in it. Sometimes pricking sensation and pulsation are felt in them. Pus which is yellow and have an offensive smell  may appear from it

Some Rare Remedies for Elephantiasis 

1. Bixa Orellana 

This medicine is a herb native to South America. Its use is therapeutically indicated for managing cases of elephantiasis in homeopathy.

2. Calotropis Gigantea 

It is another natural medicine present in homeopathic literature for managing these cases. It is prepared from root bark called Mudar or Yercum of family  asclepiadaceae. This medicine has been successfully used in elephantiasis treatment as recorded in homeopathic books.

3. Rauwolfia Serpentina

This is also a plant based natural medicine for elephantiasis management. For using this medicine mainly odema (swelling) is present around the ankle, upper limbs. 

4. Stillingia Sylvatica 

This medicine is prepared from the root of a plant commonly known as Queen’s delight. This plant belongs to the family euphorbiaceae. Ulcers on skin, itching and burning on skin are few complaints that it can manage.
