Covid-19 is an infectious disease caused by the new coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, or SARS-CoV-2). This virus strain was identified in December 2019. This disease has been declared as a pandemic in March 2020 by the World Health Organization (WHO). Croup which is also known as “Laryngotracheobronchitis” is an infection of the upper airway that occurs in younger children. It is usually caused by a virus that causes inflammation and swelling of the larynx (voice box), trachea (windpipe) and bronchial tubes (that carry air to and from the lungs). This swelling leads to cough and other signs and symptoms of this condition. There is also an obstruction of the airway, a typical barking cough, difficulty in breathing and hoarseness of voice. Homeopathic remedies for Croup are of natural origin and hence are very safe to use for children and have no side effects.

It is a very common condition. It mostly occurs in younger children. The age group most affected with this is from 6 months to 5 yrs of age. But in rare cases it can even occur in children up to 15 yrs of age. It affects boys more commonly than girls. 

Types

1. Viral Croup

It usually results from a viral infection. The most common virus that causes it is parainfluenza virus (types 1 and 2). This virus is responsible for causing infection in around 80 % of these cases.  Apart from this other viruses that can cause it includes adenovirus, influenza virus A & B, metapneumovirus and respiratory syncytial virus. A child may get this infection directly from breathing the air droplets infected with cough or sneeze by an infected child. Other than this it can also spread indirectly. In this case it can occur in a child after touching any object (like toys) / any other surface (which is contaminated with the virus from droplets of cough / sneeze of an infected child) and afterwards touching his / her nose, eyes or mouth without washing and cleaning them properly.  

2. Bacterial Croup

Other than viruses, croup can also be caused by a bacterial infection which is rarer but more severe than the viral one. Most times initially viral infection occurs that causes croup and is followed by secondary bacterial infection in these cases. The bacteria involved includes Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Haemophilus influenzae.

3. Spasmodic Croup

This type is believed  to arise from allergies like from pollens or from reflux (in which the stomach contents back flow in the food pipe). It occurs all of sudden mostly in the middle of night. Fever doesn’t occur commonly in this type.

Symptoms

It usually begins as a cold. Initially there occurs runny nose, sore throat and mild fever. If the inflammation and this condition progresses, then there occurs the next set of symptoms. It mainly includes barking coughs that sound like dog bark or a seal. The cough tends to get worse from crying, anxiety and agitation. Next symptoms are hoarseness of voice, noisy breathing or a high – pitched sound while breathing produced from obstructed air flow (stridor), labored breathing and difficulty in breathing. The symptoms of croup are often worse at night time. Mostly croups are mild and self limiting that lasts less than a week. One must seek immediate medical help if there occurs bluish or grayish skin around the nose, mouth or fingernails pointing towards cyanosis;  noisy / high – pitched breathing sounds during inhaling as well as exhaling; difficult breathing; has difficulty in swallowing; is anxious, listless,  delirious, agitated or restless.

Some of the uncommon complications include bacterial tracheitis (inflammation of trachea that is caused by a bacteria), pulmonary edema (accumulation of fluid in the tissue and air spaces of the lungs) and pneumonia ( an infection which causes inflammation of the air sacs in one or both lungs)

The term ‘Otomycosis’ is formed by joining two words ‘oto’ that means ear and ‘mycosis’ which means fungus. So, otomycosis refers to a fungal infection of the outer ear canal (a  pathway that runs from outer ear to middle ear). It is also known as Mycotic Otitis Externa. It leads to inflammation of the ear canal along with dryness, itching and offensive discharge (otorrhea) from the ear. Symptoms 

It usually affects one side of the ear but in some cases can also affect both the ears. Complications

Water brash also called acid brash is one of the symptoms that a person having gastroesophageal reflux may experience. In a person having GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disorder) the stomach acid backs up into the food pipe even up to the throat. This may lead to production of an increased amount of saliva. Homeopathic medicines for water brash are an effective and natural way to treat its root causes.

A water brash occurs when stomach acid mixes with saliva and rises to the throat. It mostly has a sour taste. The person may also feel heartburn with this due to irritation by the stomach acid.

Causes

Water brash occurs in case of GERD. When we eat food it goes down through the Esophagus (food pipe) into the stomach. When the food reaches the lower end of the food pipe the muscle called Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) relaxes and opens and the food enters into the stomach. After the food has reached the stomach the LES closes. This prevents the food and the acid in the stomach from moving up back into the food pipe. In the case of GERD, this LES gets weak, relaxes and gets open abnormally causing back flow of the stomach acid into the food pipe. It results in symptoms of heartburn, water brash and some other symptoms related to acid reflux.

There are some of the factors that increase the risk of GERD and hence its symptoms including water brash. Firstly, it includes obesity (obese people have an increase in the internal pressure within the abdomen from excessive fat. It leads to back up of stomach acid). Second risk factor is smoking  that leads to relaxation of LES from its nicotine content resulting in back flow of stomach acid. Thirdly, taking certain medicines ( like NSAID’s means non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, birth control pills and some of the antidepressants) also predisposes a person to acid reflux. Another factor is the risk of acid reflux getting high during pregnancy (this is from changes in the hormones that relax LES and pressure to the stomach caused by growing foetus. Interstitial cystitis (IC) also known as painful bladder syndrome is a condition in which there occurs chronic inflammation of the muscle layer of the bladder that causes symptoms like chronic bladder pain/bladder pressure and pelvic pain. The urinary bladder is a muscular sac that stores urine from the kidneys before it is voided out of the body. When the urinary bladder fills up completely it expands fully. This causes an urge to urinate and the bladder muscles squeeze and the external sphincter of the bladder relax to allow urine to flow out. In Interstitial cystitis inflammation of the bladder wall  can result in scarring and stiffness of the bladder. Causes

The exact reason behind this condition is not clear yet. However there are certain factors that are thought to play a role  that irritates and damages the lining of the urinary bladder and lead to this disorder. These include over stretching of the bladder, autoimmune reaction (in this the immune cells of the body due to a mistake starts damaging the body’s healthy tissue from a misdirected response), injury to lining of the bladder. Other factors are weak pelvic floor muscles, infections, allergies, trauma to spinal cord. 

It is more often diagnosed in females as compared to males. The age  when this is diagnosed is mostly during the 30’s or more.  It is also thought to run in families.

Warts are small, hard and elevated growths on skin having a rough texture that are caused by viral infection with HPV (Human Papillomavirus). They are also known as Verruca Vulgaris. Hands are one of the most common locations for warts to form though they can appear on any of the body parts. Other common sites for it are face, neck, feet. Types

Common warts

Common warts are also called vulgar warts. They are very common types of warts that appear on the backs of your hands and fingers. The size of these vary from very small ones having diameter around 3mm to large ones with diameter up to 1cm. They have variable colour. They vary in colour due to skin colour and may be white, pink, grey, yellow or brown in colour. On touch they feel rough and hard.

Flat warts

It is the next type of warts that can appear on hands (mainly back of hands) though the most common site for them is face. They are also known as plane warts. They are mostly small sized, not more than 3mm and can appear in clusters (groups). These have a flat top and on touch they feel smooth. Their colour is yellow, brown, or skin coloured.

Palmar warts

These warts tend to occur from picking at plantar warts (plantar warts are the warts that occur on soles of feet). These warts vary in colour and can be painful. They can appear in groups and then these are called mosaic warts.

Periungual and subungual warts

Periungual warts refer to the ones that appear around fingernails and subungual warts indicate the warts that arise under fingernails. Nail biting and hangnails  ( a torn piece of skin / tag that hangs loosely around the fingernail) makes a person prone to get these warts. Causes

They are caused by a virus known as human papilloma viruses (HPV). Among around  150 types of HPV only few are known to cause warts.

The warts of hands tend to occur when HPV gains entry in the body through any cut, crack, scratch on the topmost skin layer.

The virus causes multiplication of skin cells at a higher speed than what occurs under normal circumstances. It leads to outgrowths on the skin called warts.

Warts are contagious and are transmitted by skin to skin contact with people having warts. A person having warts in one place can also spread to another body part of his own if he touches a healthy body part with hands infected with the virus from touching the wart.

A person (if there is any crack or break in his skin that came in contact with HPV infected object / surface) can get the HPV infection and warts even from touching the object (like towel, door knob, door bell) or any other surface that has been previously touched and infected by wart of a person. Reasons

Everyone tends to experience temporary hand weakness at some point of their life. It can be due to tiredness, a result of doing over exertion which usually recovers in some time. However, in many cases it could be arising from some medical reasons. Hand weakness can arise from several medical reasons. 

Hand weakness mainly arises when the muscles of hands or the nerves that control it get damaged, diseased, fatigued and are not able to work properly. Less commonly it can result from joint diseases or disease of bone, fractured hand bones, skin issues that reduce skin elasticity or disease of blood vessels that causes reduced blood supply, burns, nutritional deficiency, alcohol intoxication and side effects of some drugs like corticosteroids when used for a long time.

First medical reason behind hand weakness is carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) – it is one of the most common reasons behind hand weakness. It arises from compression of the median nerve while travelling through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. It is mostly caused by overuse and repetitive activities/strain injury of the wrist and hand eg. typing, some machine use with hands, piano playing for long hours from long time. It results in numbness, tingling, pain, burning sensations in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and radial half (thumb side) of the ring finger. It can also lead to weak grip strength in hands and lack of coordination of hands. 

Secondly, it can arise in case of diabetic neuropathy (Damage of the nerves  mainly feet and legs initially followed by the hands and arms from uncontrolled blood sugar levels for a very long time). It can also arise in case of a herniated disc (slipping of some part of the soft jelly of the intervertebral disk from the centre  out of its tough exterior part) in the upper part of spine (cervical spine).  

Additionally, it can occur in brachial plexus injury or disorder. In this there occurs trauma, injury or inflammation of the network of nerves arising from the neck region (brachial plexus) responsible for sending signals from spinal cord to shoulder, arm and hand.

Another cause is median nerve palsy. The median nerve begins from the brachial plexus and enters the hand through the carpal tunnel. Any damage to this nerve can lead to problems with hand, wrist, thumb movement; and hand weakness.

Other than this it can happen in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) which is a degenerative  nervous system disease  in which nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord responsible for controlling muscles are affected. Initially it presents with twitching, stiffness and weakness of muscle beginning in hand, feet, arms, legs.

Other nerve conditions where hand weakness can arise includes  Guillain Barre syndrome – GBS (an autoimmune disorder where  immune system of body attacks the nerves of peripheral nervous system and cause weakness, tingling and numbness in the limbs) and multiple sclerosis ( a progressive disorder where immune system damages the protective myelin sheath of the nerve fibres hindering communication between  brain and the rest of the body ). 

Apart from above weakness of hands can appear from damage or disease of muscles. Red eyes refers to redness of the white portion of the eye (sclera).Here the white of the eye may look pink, red, bloodshot or may appear to have pink/red lines on it. Sebaceous cysts are non-cancerous (benign) bumps under the skin that are filled with semi – solid material. They are very common and mostly found on the scalp, face, neck and back, though can develop anywhere on skin except the palms of hands and the soles of feet. The term sebaceous cyst refers to either an epidermoid cyst which originates from the epidermis (top layer of the skin) or a pilar cyst that originate from the hair follicles.

As these cyst don’t originate from sebaceous glands and don’t contain sebum, So the term sebaceous cyst is inappropriate for them. The true sebaceous cysts are the ones that  originate from sebaceous glands (glands in the skin having an opening in the hair follicle gland where it secrete oily matter known as sebum). Causes 

The epidermoid cysts develop from the skin. The surface of the skin, known as the epidermis consists of thin layers of cells. These cells are constantly shed off. The epidermoid cysts develop from inward movement and trapping of skin cells and multiplying there in spite of moving out on the skin surface and shedding outside. They can also develop from any damage that causes cells on top of the skin to be implanted in the lower layer. They can  follow irritation or injury to the skin too.

The true sebaceous cysts can form due to deformed, damage or blockage of the duct of the sebaceous gland (this duct act a passage from where the sebum / oil is able to leave). It can follow a trauma like a surgical wound or scratch on the skin.

Sometimes the cyst is linked to genetic conditions like Gardner’s syndrome (a rare genetic disorder in which there occurs multiple polyps in the colon i.e. large intestine along with some other tumours outside the colon. The other tumours outside the colon may include fibromas, epidermoid cyst, desmoid tumours, osteomas of skull). 

In many cases no cause can be ruled out behind the sebaceous cyst.

Symptoms 

They are felt as a lump under the skin. They grow very slowly, are harmless and usually do not cause any problem but can be uncomfortable and cosmetically look bad. 

Though they can occur on any body part, they are more common on the scalp, face, neck, back, chest and ears. In males they commonly develop in scrotum and chest. They may contain fibrous tissue, fluids. They may also contain keratin (a strong protein present in the skin, nails and also teeth). Next they may be filled with somewhat viscous, serosanguineous fluid that contains pus and blood. The type of the contents of the cyst vary depending on if the cyst is infected or not.

The size can vary from a few mm to around 5 cm. These are round in shape and when touched these cyst feels smooth, mostly soft and movable. The small cyst are not painful and tender to touch. But when they are large they can be painful and cause pressure on the surrounding parts. They also become painful if they get infected, damaged or inflamed. When infected or inflamed the skin over the cyst becomes red, tender and sore.  A thick, yellow,  cheesy, bad smelling material may sometimes drain from the cyst. The cyst should not be scratched, pricked popped or squeezed to prevent chance of infection. These cysts are commonly found in the hairy areas of the body. In long standing cases the hair on the surface of skin above the cyst may be lost. Most times no complications occur in it. But sometimes few complications can arise. The first complication that can arise is its fixation if it extends deep in the body and connects to underlying tissue and forms a fixed lump that does not move. Next complication is infection (when bacteria gain entry in the cyst) resulting in abscess formation. Other complications include inflammation and rupture of the sebaceous cysts. Very rarely epidermoid cysts can lead to skin cancer.

7. Lobelia Inflata

It is prepared from plant puke weed either with fresh plant when in flower and seed or its dried leaves. This plant belongs to the family lobeliaceae. This medicine has a tendency to resolve most obstinate cysts on the scalp. It either makes the cyst dissolve gradually or resolves it by aiding the discharge of its contents.
