Allergies Making Life Miserable? Homeopathic Remedies Are Natural Solutions

homeopathy for allergy Allergy refers to a sudden hypersensitive reaction, presented with a number of symptoms. Allergen is an agent that is considered harmful by a sensitive/allergic person but doesn’t have any effect on other persons. The main allergens include dust mites, pollens, animal danders, certain food like eggs and shellfish etc. The main allergies include nasal allergy, allergic cough, food allergies, dust allergy, and skin rash. The allergic reactions to Hair dye are also prevalent in some. The homeopathy treatment for allergies not only helps in giving relief in acute attacks of allergy but also promises to effect a cure and exact the condition from its root. The cure is possible by application of properly selected constitutional medicines to the patient. In homeopathy, the allergies are treated not on the basis of the allergen triggering the allergic response, but by the characteristic individual symptoms narrated by the patient. These characteristic symptoms are, in essence, the key to unlocking the most suitable medicine required. Homeopathy for allergy works by moderating the overactive immune system. In this article, various types of allergies and their corresponding  medicines have been discussed.

Homeopathy for Allergy

1. Apis Mellifica: Apis mellifica holds a prime position to treat the hives or urticarial rash due to allergic reactions. This medicine can be utilized in all cases of allergic hives that result in violent itching with burning and stinging sensations. The patient may be relieved by cold applications. The skin is sensitive to touch. Swelling also accompanies. Slight betterment in the skin symptoms in the open air is another prominent factor which, if present, confirms that this medicine should be used.

2. Arsenic Album: Arsenic Album is a frequently used medicine for treating nasal allergy. The symptom that points towards this medicine’s implication is fluent and burning discharge from the nose with much sneezing. This may be accompanied by watering from eyes with burning.

3. Natrum Mur: Natrum Mur is suitable medicine for both nasal and skin allergies. The important pointers for using Natrum Mur in nasal allergy are running nose with sneezing and breathing difficulties, and in skin allergies, it is used mainly when excessive itching is present that mainly gets worse in a warm room and better in open air. Craving for salt is usually noted in all the patients requiring Natrum Mur.

4. Sulphur: When it comes to skin allergies, Sulphur is the foremost and an infallible medicine for allergies. This can be employed in all those cases of skin allergy where excessive itching with extreme burning sensation is present. Skin usually remains dry. The patient scratches the skin and gets relief. These are all the local skin symptoms for using this medicine. The constitutional symptoms used for selecting this medicine for chronic treatment include an aversion to bathing, unhealthy dirty looking skin, craving for sweets and an utmost heat in the whole body.

Various Allergies and Homeopathy

1. Nasal Allergies (Allergic Rhinitis)

The main causative allergens towards exciting an attack of nasal allergy are dust mites, animal danders and pollens. The main symptoms of allergic rhinitis include sneezing, fluent discharge from nose, dropping of nasal discharge back into the throat which is referred to as postnasal drip in some cases, itching in nose, throat and ear, and a discharge from eyes with itching in them. The natural medicines that show excellence in treating nasal allergies include Allium Cepa, Arsenic album, Arundo Mauri, Kali Bichromicum and Gelsemium. The first two mentioned medicines vis-a-vis Allium Cepa and Arsenic album are natural medicines for nasal allergy. They both work well when the symptoms are running nose with sneezing, burning in nose and eyes. But there is a very fine line of demarcation that decides the application of medicine out of these two, which is that if the patient feels better in open air and worse in warm room Allium cepa is selected, and for the exact opposite condition in which patient is relieved in warm room and worse in open air then Arsenic album becomes the choice of medicine. The next medicine Arundo mauri is the best choice when extreme itching in nose, eyes, and throat predominate with sneezing and fluent nasal discharge. The use of medicine Kali bichromicum is called for in those patients of nasal allergy in whom the nasal discharge dropping into the throat (postnasal drip) stands out to be a dominant feature along with sneezing. The last medicine Gelsemium is prescribed when the running nose and sneezing are present with pain in head and a feverish feeling. The above mentioned medicines can also be used as remedies for seasonal allergies .

2. Allergic Cough (Allergic Asthma)

Allergic cough mainly presents itself as cough with difficult breathing, suffocation, chest tightness and wheezing/whistling sounds from chest. The medicines of immense help in allergic cough include Arsenic album, Ipecac, Bryonia and Sambucus. The selection of medicine to treat allergic asthma is based upon the dominant symptoms of the patient. Arsenic album is selected when cough with chest tightness and suffocative attacks is the main complaint of the patient. The patient feels that this problem is worse at night time and has to sit up for relief. Warm drinks usually bring relief to this person. For using Ipecac in allergic cough, the main symptom is a violent loose cough with wheezing sounds due to the loading of mucus in the chest. Sometimes vomiting accompanies cough and relieves the patient. The next medicine Bryonia Alba gives good results when the cough is dry. This may be accompanied with chest pain and difficult breathing. Mainly the person over all feels better on lying down and worse on walking. The last medicine Sambucus is of supreme importance when nasal blockage is present with suffocative cough. Due to nasal blockage, the patient wakes suddenly at night with symptoms of difficulty in breathing and suffocation.

4. Skin Allergies

The skin allergy includes rash with itching, eczema (allergic dermatitis) and urticaria (hives). In urticaria the skin gets raised in patches with itching. The best medicines that come into play for treating allergic skin rash are Sulphur, Apis mellifica and Urtica Urens. Sulphur is a well known allergy medicine for treating skin complaints. Sulphur can be prescribed in all types of allergic skin rash where dryness, itching and burning sensations predominate. Apis mellifica is of great help in treating urticarial rashes where intense itching with burning stinging sensations and swelling of skin is present. Cold application may relieve the patient. Swelling of face may also be present. Allergic rash with asthmatic symptoms yield wonderfully to this medicine. Urtica urens is the first choice when eating shellfish has excited the skin rash with violent itching and heat.

The common food allergens leading allergic reaction are Egg, shellfish, nuts, wheat and milk.

The medicines for egg allergy are Carbo veg, Nux vomica and Sulph. Carbo veg and Nux vom are the natural medicines for egg allergy where gastric symptoms predominate. Carbo veg is prescribed when loose offensive stool, gas in stomach, nausea, vomiting follows eating eggs. And if this is accompanied with pain in abdomen Nux vomica is selected. For combating with shellfish allergy, the best natural medicine is Urtica Urens. This medicine can be taken by all those patients in whom sudden hives with violent itching and burning follows eating shell fish. This medicine has excellent power to control such symptoms.

The food allergy to wheat can be controlled with medicines that include Lycopodium, colocynth and Natrum Mur. Lycopodium can help in controlling the gastric symptoms. Lycopodium can be used when loose stool with gas in abdomen predominates. Colocynth is used when cramping pains in stomach accompany loose stool, and Natrum Mur is used when skin rash occur either independently or along with gastric trouble after taking wheat.

Nasal Allergies and Homeopathy

Nasal Allergies in Summer

Dr. Vikas Sharma

Have you been sneezing very often this summer? Do you have itching in the nose , roof of mouth and eyes? Are you getting a watery discharge from your nose? If yes then there are good chances that you have Allergic rhinitis. Allergic rhinitis refers to an allergic condition that occurs in the upper respiratory tract and also in the conjunctiva of the eyes. This is usually a harmless condition but can throw one’s life out of gear. Most of the people who suffer from its seasonal form, have recurrent episode in late spring, summers and fall. Homeopathy provides a great hope for all those who suffer from it in treating this kind of allergy from its base and thereby stopping its annual recurrence.

People who suffer from allergic rhinitis usually have these following symptoms-  1) Sneezing , which may occur any time and can occur in bouts ; where one may  even have 20-30 sneezes in a row . Morning sneezes are very common in those suffer from allergic rhinitis. Such sneezing episodes may occur as early as one wakes up .2) Runny nose – sneezing is accompanied by profuse watery discharge from the nose. Along with other symptoms one may also have same king of watery discharge from eyes. 3) Itching in the eyes, nose and the roof of the mouth – itching in the nose roof of moth and eyes are very common symptoms in allergic rhinitis. Most patients complain of a “crawling” sensation in the nose and the roof of the mouth. 4) Some patients may even suffer from breathing difficulty if the attack gets serious. This kind of breathing difficulty is usually noted in spring weather during wheat harvest season. 6) Fever may also be present in some individuals during a severe attack of allergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis usually occurs in two forms. The kind of allergic rhinitis that one would have it in only a particular weather is called as Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis. Late spring, summers and early autumn is the main weather when it occurs.  Such kind of allergic rhinitis occurs due to sensitivity to pollens from trees, grasses or weeds, or to airborne mold spores. The second type is the ‘Perennial Allergy’ and occurs all the year around. In such kind of allergic rhinitis ,the sensitivity is mainly to substances that one encounters daily . Examples of Such substances are – cockroaches, dust mites, pollution and animal dander.

Homeopathic medicines are one of the best forms of natural treatment for allergic rhinitis. They works both ways – By controlling the acute symptoms and also treating the chronicity of allergy; thereby gradually stopping the recurrence of attacks. Homeopathic medicines work by desensitizing the overactive immune system in allergic rhinitis patients. Homeopathic medicines Natrum Mur, Sabadilla , Allium Cepa  lead the homeopathic table in treating allergic rhinitis and can treat both the acute as well Chronic nature of the disease. Allium  cepa and Aralea Racemosa  are  very effective in treating allergic rhinitis that occurs in spring . Lately, some medicines have been introduced in Homeopathy which have  been found to very effective in treating allergic rhinitis – they are Galphimia Glauca , Histaminum  and Luffa Operculata.

ALLERGIES AND HOMEOPATHY

It is spring time. There is so much of optimism in the air that people get frenzy. It is such a euphoric time in the year that people get eccentric while enjoying and find outrageous ways of doing it – Holi in India, Fallas in Spain and the Great Toad Derby (Toad race) in California. Spring all over the world is a time for celebrations and fairs, but for some this time is not so fair. Staying indoors is the only option. At times even this option also proves unsuccessful. It is time for the dreaded allergies to come up and pollen is the main cause. Though high pollen counts can affect numerous types of allergies, from eye allergies (conjunctivitis) to skin reactions (dermatitis), the most common spring allergy is allergic rhinitis (symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, nasal congestion or headaches) and asthma.

For those who suffer from allergies, their immune system has mistakenly learned to remember the pollen released by various plants as potentially harmful, and responds with the familiar allergic symptoms. The specific types of pollen and the time of their release depends upon the local climate and varies around the country.

Weather can influence the timing and severity of the problem. A mild winter often leads to a more severe pollen season. If the spring is warmer and wetter than usual, that can provoke more grass to grow earlier, leading to a more severe situation during the late spring and summer already been released out of the air. An important component of the allergy management plan is to go in for a thorough homoeopathic treatment, avoiding the pollens and molds that make you sneeze and wheeze.

Can such seasonal allergies be totally cured with homoeopathy? Yes, if one is able to get a good homoeopathic treatment. But as allergy is a thousand-headed monster, it may take two-three seasons before one can get completely cured.

Why should one use homoeopathy for treating allergies?

a) First of all, it prevents further deterioration as it is often the noted conditions such as allergic rhinitis that can progress into asthma. b) Safe treatment-homoeopathic medicines do not have any sedative effect as some of the other conventional drugs used to control allergy do. c) Non-toxic-homoeopathic medicines are highly diluted, thus there are no chances of developing drug-toxicity. d) The homoeopathic system uses the body’s own healing system to work for it.

Does homoeopathy believe in treating only the chronic state of allergies or are there medicines that can take care when one gets those acute flare-ups in spring?

The treatment is aimed at controlling both acute and chronic problems though a different set of medicines might be used to control the acute attacks of allergy. A constitutional approach is often the best way while treating the chronic state. Prescription based on a thorough analysis of a person’s physical and mental characteristics is what called as “constitutional approach” in homoeopathy. profile pic

When eyes of such people come in contact with allergens, there is the release of chemicals including histamines producing allergic symptoms. Some examples of the allergens that can trigger eye allergies include – grass, weeds, pollens, dust mites, molds, pet danders, smoke, and perfumes. In some people, eye allergies may also arise from the use of eye drops, or cosmetics. Having a family history of allergies puts a person at risk to get eye allergies.

Symptoms of Eye Allergies

The main symptoms of eye allergies include itching in the eyes, watery eyes, redness of eyes, burning in eyes and swollen eyelids. People may usually experience accompanying nasal symptoms that include a runny nose, stuffy nose, sneezing and itching in nostrils.
The symptoms of eye allergies appearing only during a particular time of year or a specific season are referred to as seasonal allergies. Triggers for seasonal allergies mainly include pollen, weeds, and grass, and these may be a reason for itchy eyes.
When the symptoms of eye allergies are present all year round, they are referred perennial allergies. Dust mites and animal danders are common causes of perennial allergy.

Common Eye Allergies

Main eye allergies include allergic conjunctivitis (seasonal and perennial), vernal keratoconjunctivitis, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, and contact allergic conjunctivitis.

Allergic conjunctivitis is of two types seasonal (arising in a particular season) and perennial (present all the year around). The symptoms include itchy, red eyes with watery discharge and burning in the eyes. The nasal symptoms that can accompany are a runny nose, sneezing, and nasal congestion.

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis is also known as spring catarrh. It usually occurs in young children and males are more affected by it. Eczema or asthma may be present in persons having this condition. Its symptoms are seen during the spring season, like itchy eyes, watering from eyes, thick stringy mucus discharge from eyes, sensitivity to light, papillae formation in eyelids and sensation of foreign body in eyes. Vision impairment can occur if it is left untreated.

Atopic keratoconjunctivitis is the inflammation of both the conjunctiva and cornea. It usually affects older patients. A history of allergic dermatitis may be present. Symptoms of atopic keratoconjunctivitis include severe itchy, burning, red eyes, thick mucus discharge from eyes that may cause the eyelids to stick together. If left untreated or not managed well, permanent scarring of the cornea can occur, causing visual changes.

Contact allergic conjunctivitis is a result of irritation by contact lenses or from the proteins in tears that tend to bind to the surface of the lens.

Nasal Allergy treatment with homeopathy

Allergies are fast emerging as a major threat to our health. There are three basic reasons why one should prefer homeopathy for this problem.

One, it is the most natural and safest treatment. As it is based on the principle of ”like cures like” it forms a natural way of conditioning our healing responses also. The substances used in homoeopathy are in a highly diluted state and they act very safely – without any side-effect. Two, as it is a natural form of medication it does not suppress the disease. Three, the beneficial effects achieved with homeopathic medicines are lasting and do not vanish once the treatment is stopped.

What is allergic rhinitis?

It is nasal allergy which is also referred to as hay fever. This mostly affects our nasal path (nose tract) and the conjunctiva of the eyes. Its symptoms are frequent sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, congestion, and itchy eyes, nose, and roof of the mouth or the throat.

Allergic rhinitis is like any other allergy. The only difference is that the fight between the antigen and the antibodies takes place in the nose, eyes, etc.

As we breathe, we take in many substances along with the air. Substances such as pollens, animal dander and smoke (allergens), for some individuals, are countered by the body’s own defence system in our nose. They are attacked by the already developed antibodies in our system. This is called an allergic reaction, which also results in the release of an inflammatory chemical called histamine. It causes the swelling of the mucous membranes in our nose, sinuses and eyes, leading to a runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing.

The most common allergens are pollens (released by trees, grasses or weeds.), animal dander, dust mites, molds, dust and smoke. For those who have seasonal allergies, pollens are the main culprit, and for those who suffer all the year around animal dander, dust mites, cockroaches and molds are the culprits.

But it is actually no fault of the person who suffers from this allergy. It is your body’s own watchdogs that have (by mistake) started fighting the substances that are not at all harmful to you. The hereditary factor plays a major role. If one of your parents is suffering from any kind of allergy the chances are that you would also develop an allergy of some sorts. If both parents suffer from allergy, the risk for you to develop allergy is 70 per cent.

The homeopathic medicines used in treating allergic rhinitis are Sabadilla, Natrum Mur, Arundo, Allium Cepa, Histaminum and Wyethia. Another medicine that has been introduced and has a great role in treating allergic rhinitis is Glaphimia Glauca. The medicines mentioned are for information only. Self-medication can be harmful.

Nasal Allergies In Autumn

image

Are you sneezing dozens of time in a day? Is your nose dripping like water from a tap? Are you getting itchy and watery eyes and all of this has been there since the last few days or weeks? If yes, than it is probably due to the fact that you are suffering from seasonal allergic rhinitis or autumn allergy. This kind of upper respiratory allergy develops due to the increased presence of allergens (allergy causing substances like pollen etc.) in the environment during the months of September to early November. An extension of this kind of allergy occurs in the months of April and May.

5 Best Homeopathic Medicines for Allergic Rhinitis

Are you suffering from frequent sneezing attacks, runny nose and itchy eyes? If yes, then you are suffering from allergic rhinitis, simply called nasal allergy. Also known as hay fever, this condition sometimes causes breathing problems and is then called hay asthma. Homeopathic medicines can provide significant relief to those who suffer from allergic rhinitis not only temporarily but also a long-term cure for nasal allergy.

Top Homeopathic Medicines for Allergic Rhinitis

The top five homeopathic medicines to treat allergic rhinitis are Natrum Mur, Sabadilla, Arsenic Album, Allium Cepa and Arundo Mauritanica. Two medicines that require a special mention in homeopathy are Galphima Glauca and Histaminum. Both of them have been lately introduced in homeopathy and have done wonders in treating the acute symptoms of allergic rhinitis.

1. Natrum MurTop-grade medicine

It is the leading homeopathic medicine for treating allergic rhinitis. It covers nearly all the problem areas and is the most widely used homeopathic medicine for treating nasal allergy. Violent sneezing and runny nose is the foremost guiding symptom to put it into use. The nasal discharge is thin and watery resembling the raw white of an egg. This discharge may flow for a day or two followed by nasal blockage which makes breathing difficult. Frequent sneezing occurs early in the morning and a sensation of a small worm wriggling in the nostril is felt. Loss of smell and taste may also be noted.

When  Should one use Natrum Mur?

It is the first choice of every homeopath for treating almost every case of allergic rhinitis. Whenever a person is having intense sneezing and runny nose, this medicine can be given without a second thought. It is suitable for persons of all age groups .

2. Sabadilla – for complaints worsening from strong smells

It is a natural medicine sourced from seeds of Cebadilla plant. It is used when a person is oversensitive to strong smells.  The most noteworthy symptom to use this medicine is marked sneezing, along with runny nose which gets worse with strong odors, for example, perfume. It is followed by watering and redness in the eyes. Stuffed nose may sometimes add to your woes.

When to use Sabadilla?

Sabadilla can be given to persons who have a runny nose after exposure to strong odors e.g. perfume, along with sneezing .

3. Arsenic Albumfor watery nasal discharge with a burning sensation

Though placed at number three, it is equally effective as the above-mentioned two medicines. The only difference is that it is prescribed by a homeopath based on different symptoms. It is recommended when there is thin watery nasal discharge that causes a burning sensation in the nose, and excoriation which means peeling away of the skin of the nostrils. It is accompanied by sneezing. The patient’s condition worsens in the open air, but feels better indoors. Sometimes, you might have a stuffy nose along with the above-mentioned symptoms.

When and how to use Arsenic Album?

This medicine can be used when watery discharge flows from the nose that causes burning sensation and excoriation (damage or peeling of skin) in nostrils, along with sneezing. Use of this medicine is recommended in both low and high potencies. In the beginning, one may use 30C potency once or twice a day. For using high potencies, prior consultation with homeopathic physician is a must.

4. Allium Cepa for irritating, burning nasal discharge and non- irritating  eye discharge

The most pressing indication to use this medicine is profuse, watery irritating burning nasal discharge and copious, non-irritating eye discharge. In severe cases, the nasal discharge burns and corrodes (damages) the nose and upper lips due to acidic nature. It is accompanied by sneezing. Allium is also recommended when sneezing and nasal discharge worsen on entering a warm room and get better in open air. It is also effective when intense sneezing occurs on rising from bed. When nasal allergy worsens in spring or early in the month of August, Allium Cepa is the most extensively used remedy.

When and how to use Allium Cepa?

Nasal discharge that causes burning, corroding in nose and upper lip, with non–irritating eye discharge is the classic indicator to use this medicine. This medicine can also be used in both low and high potencies. It is safe to use it in 30 C potency in the beginning, once a day to thrice a day depending on the severity of symptoms, but for high potencies like 200 C or more, prior consultation with homeopathic physician is strictly advised.

5. Arundo Mauritanica – for itching in nostrils, with sneezing

The most outstanding symptom pointing to its use is itching in nostrils and sneezing. Itching of palate (roof of mouth) and eyes is also felt along with burning sensation.

When and how to use Arundo?

The key symptom is itching in nostrils with intense sneezing. It can be taken two to three times a day in 30C power.

Note Whenever taking any of these medicines, you may continue for about 2 to 3 weeks. If symptoms persist or you wish to continue any of these medicines beyond 3 weeks, it is strictly advised to seek consultation from a homeopathic physician. Also, do not take high potencies without consulting a homeopathic doctor.

What causes allergic rhinitis?

It is a part of the reaction of the body to a misdirected defense response from the body. This occurs when the body’s own defense cells called antibodies start attacking substances like pollen, wheat threshing dust, dust, etc. In other words, the body’s defense cells, which are meant to fight micro-organisms like bacteria and viruses, start attacking substances like pollen which are otherwise harmless to our body. This interaction between the defense cells (antibodies) and substances like pollen, wheat threshing dust (antigens), etc. results in the production of a substance, histamine, which is responsible for all local symptoms produced during allergies.

What are the symptoms?

Some symptoms arise immediately after exposure to the allergen and some of the symptoms may develop later. Its pertinent to mention here that symptoms of allergic rhinitis are not life-threatening but can seriously affect the quality of one’s life. The symptoms may occur only in a particular season or all the year around, which depends on the type of allergic rhinitis.

Following symptoms arise immediately on exposure to allergen:

– sneezing that can range from a few to many

–  profuse watery discharge from the nose

– itching in the nose, eyes, roof of the mouth and throat

– watery, red eyes

Following symptoms may occur later:

– blocked stuffy nose

– cough

– sore, scratchy throat

– headache

– blockage in ears

– reduced sense of smell

– fatigue, irritability, feeling ill

– difficulty in breathing in some patients

-dark under-eye circles

What are the two types of allergic rhinitis?

The two types include seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis

It occurs during a particular time of the year i.e. in spring, summer and early fall. It occurs from response to outdoor allergens like pollen. It occurs during this time because pollen count is high with trees and weeds in full bloom.

Perennial allergic rhinitis

Its symptoms can occur throughout the year. It happens from exposure to indoor allergens like dust mites and pet dander. The symptoms may worsen in winter when time spent indoors increases.

How homeopathy helps in curing allergic rhinitis?

In allergic rhinitis, homeopathic medicines work by optimizing the overactive immune system. Homeopathic medicines provide a stimulus (in a highly diluted form) to the body similar to what the trigger or allergen would have produced, leading to the gradual desensitization of the immune system. Homeopathic medicines used for treating allergic rhinitis mainly come from plants or organic substances. So, they do not have any side-effects and help in recovering naturally.

What are the common allergens that trigger nasal allergy?

The common allergens that can trigger nasal allergy are as follows:

–   different kinds of pollen (powder coming from flowering plants): Tree pollen, grass pollen

–  weeds

–  mites in the dust inside our homes

–  mold

–  animal dander (tiny flakes shed from skin) from pets like dogs, cats

–  wood dust

Allergic rhinitis occurs from allergies but there are certain external factors that can trigger or aggravate allergic rhinitis. Some of these include strong smells like perfumes, cigarette smoke, wind, cold temperature, wood smoke and fumes.

 Who is at risk?

Though anyone can suffer from it, those having a family history of allergic rhinitis or some other allergies are at more risk. People who have atopic eczema and asthma are also highly prone.

Is allergic rhinitis contagious?

No, it is not contagious. It means it does not spread from one person to another via inhalation of respiratory droplets from the person suffering from allergic rhinitis.

How to know if it is allergic rhinitis, cold or flu?

Many people tend to confuse allergic rhinitis with cold or flu due to some similar symptoms. Here are some points to differentiate between these two conditions.

– In allergic rhinitis, sneezing and thin clear watery nasal discharge and symptom may last for many weeks, longer (even all the year around) than a cold.

– In allergic rhinitis, itching in the nose, throat, eyes, mouth is common and fever is absent. Allergic rhinitis is an allergic reaction and not contagious. However, in case of cold or flu, the nasal discharge tends to be thick and a person can also have fever. Sneezing and sore throat may also occur. In most of the cases, cold happens from a virus and it is contagious. It lasts from 3 days to a week and in extreme cases, not more than two weeks.

Can allergic rhinitis lead to any complications?

Yes, sometimes a few complications can arise from allergic rhinitis. These include development of asthma or worsening of asthma, frequent sinus infections, frequent ear infections. The symptoms may cause poor sleep or inability to sleep at night.

Can hay fever be prevented?

Though allergic rhinitis cannot be prevented but some preventive measures can help reduce the intensity of its symptoms. These are as follows:

– During seasons when pollen is in the air,  prefer staying indoors as much as possible

– When pollen count is high, keep the windows closed

– Wash hands immediately after handling pets

– Change clothes or take shower as soon you come home after being outdoors

– Use dust and mite-proof bedding covers

– Use air conditioner to decrease amount of allergens in the air

Role of Vitamin D in managing allergic rhinitis symptoms

According to a research paper published in Asia Pacific allergy journal (The role of Vitamin D in allergic rhinitis), decreased levels of Vitamin D worsens allergic rhinitis symptoms. Vitamin D controls or modulate defense cells (over-activation of which increases allergic rhinitis symptoms), so vitamin D levels are very important to treat allergic rhinitis.

As per research paper European Respiratory Journal, in persons with low vitamin D levels, the symptoms of allergic rhinitis were severe. A trial was done in which placebo (plain non medicated pills) was given to 50 pc of the persons who participated in the trial and the rest 50 pc were given oral vitamin D (chole-calciferol 1000 IU) for thirty days.

It was seen that there was significant reduction in the symptoms of allergic rhinitis in those who were given vitamin D supplement but symptoms persisted in those who received placebo.

In a similar experiment by the Pediatric Department of University of Lordz in Poland, a trial was done on children.  It was seen that in children who received vitamin D 1000 IU daily, there was significant reduction in allergy symptoms.

From the above-mentioned papers, it is clearly evident that vitamin D 1000 IU daily during allergy period can offer significant relief.

Top 3 Natural Homeopathic Medicines for Pollen Allergy

pollen allergy homeopathy

The sudden appearance of symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes as a result of inhaling pollens is known as a pollen allergy. An inflammatory response against the pollen grains is triggered by the immune system of a person allergic to pollen. Of the many substances that can cause a seasonal allergy, pollens remain one of the most common triggers. Pollen is a powdery substance produced by flowers, weeds, trees, and grass. Most trees produce pollen during the spring season; flowers and grasses produce pollen during the summertime, and late-blooming plants like ragweed produce pollen around late summer and early autumn. Homeopathic medicine for allergy caused by pollen grains can treat acute allergic reactions, as well as chronic allergic tendencies.

The pollens are spread by the wind and other means to fertilize plants of the same species. All of us tend to inhale pollens while breathing, and they don’t cause any problem for most of us. However, people who are allergic to pollen grains show the symptoms of an allergy. A pollen allergy is also known as Hay fever, and it usually subsides with the onset of cold weather.

Symptoms of a Pollen Allergy

Since every plant has its own pollinating period, the symptoms of pollen allergies are triggered when the particular plant is producing pollen. A person who is allergic to a specific type of pollen will develop allergic symptoms only when exposed to that particular pollen. The main symptoms of a pollen allergy include:

– A runny nose

– Sneezing

Stuffy or blocked nose

– Watery, itchy, red, swollen eyes

– Itchy, scratchy throat

– Cough

Asthmatic reaction with wheezing, breathlessness, and coughing

– Worsening of sinusitis complaint

Homeopathic Remedies for Pollen Allergy

Homeopathic medicines can effectively treat an acute allergic reaction and also work well to manage the chronic tendency towards pollen allergy. With the use of homeopathic treatment, the intensity and occurrence of the symptoms gradually decrease with every attack.
Antihistamines are most commonly used to treat allergic reactions in the conventional system of medicine. While they help deal with an acute allergic reaction, they only work on a short-term, temporary basis. Excessive use of these medications can cause side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, restlessness, nausea, and confusion.
Homeopathic medicines, on the other hand, have no side effects. They help moderate the overactive immune system and are a safe, natural treatment for seasonal pollen allergies.

Causes of Pollen Allergies

The most common cause of pollen allergies is, of course, pollen grains spread by plants. The common sources of pollens include grass, trees, and weeds.

Grass – The common grass species that tend that cause pollen allergies include ryegrass, Timothy, and Bermuda. The pollination periods of these grasses are different, and a person allergic to a specific type of grass pollen will develop allergies in the corresponding season.
Ryegrass produces pollen throughout Spring to Fall, while Timothy produces pollen during the months of June and July. Bermuda produces pollen from May to September.

Trees – The common trees that are known to cause pollen allergy are birch, oak, and cedar. The pollinating period of these trees during the Spring season.

Weeds – The common weeds that tend to trigger allergies are ragweed and sagebrush. The peak levels of pollen production of ragweed are around mid-September. The pollinating period of sagebrush is mid-August to late September.

Pollen Count

The pollen count is defined as the amount of pollen present in the air at a given place. It is calculated over a period of 24 hours as the number of grains per square meter of air. On the basis of this calculation, the pollen count is divided into high, medium, low, or absent. It includes three types of pollen including weeds, grasses, and trees, as well as mold spores.
The pollen count affects the symptoms of a pollen allergy. A low pollen count does not affect too many people (except for those who are highly sensitive), while a medium-to-high number can give rise to allergic symptoms.
The pollen count in the local area can be checked online through National websites that are updated daily.

The Mechanism of a Pollen Allergy

When an allergen (like pollen) enters the body of a person with a sensitive immune system, it triggers the production of antibodies to fight the foreign particles. These antibodies are small proteins that lock onto the pollen grains, and they also bind to other white blood cells.
The next time pollen enters the nose; these cells break open to release histamine, which is a chemical released by the body to direct an inflammatory response against the foreign bodies. A large amount of histamine released causes itching, swelling of affected tissues, mucus production, muscle spasms, and other symptoms of an allergy.

Preventing Pollen Allergies

Preventing exposure to the allergens is the best way to deal with pollen allergies, especially during the high-allergy seasons. Some measures that can help prevent and manage a pollen allergy include:

Stay informed about the pollen count in your area and avoid exposure to the allergens on high and medium pollen count days. Those who are extremely prone to developing an allergic reaction should be careful even during low pollen counts.

Know your Allergens – Ask an allergist and observe for yourself the allergens that set off your allergies. Avoid exposure to those allergens, especially during the peak allergy season, and take measures to ensure that the allergy does not get triggered.

When the pollen counts are high, it is best to remain indoors in an air-conditioned environment with closed windows.

If you are planning to be outdoors while the allergy season is on, try to be outdoors when the pollen counts are low. Usually, plants pollinate between 5 am to 9 am, so early morning outdoor activities should be avoided. Walking a dog during these hours is also not advised since animals can trap pollen on their fur. Pollen also tends to flow more through the air on windy days.

Using masks to filter out pollen when outdoors is a good way to prevent exposure to the allergens.

Pollen grains can follow you into the house through the clothes, hair, and pets. Changing clothes and showering immediately upon returning home is strongly advised.

Sunglasses should be used to keep the pollen out of the eyes. Eyes irritated by allergies are also more sensitive to light, so sunglasses help prevent further exposure.

Indoor plants that produce pollen are often overlooked. These include ornamental grasses, shrubs, and trees. These should ideally not be kept in the house.

Apart from the allergens, it is also essential to control the irritants that trigger allergic reactions or make their symptoms worse.
Not smoking in the house, avoiding wood fires, and avoiding strong odors off of sprays, paints, disinfectants, and perfumes are some methods to reduce the number of irritants.

Pollen allergies should be treated promptly, especially in acute cases. Where required, prescription medications and antihistamines should be taken to control a severe allergic flare up. However, overuse of conventional medicines like decongestant sprays can cause further problems (like an allergy rebound) and should be used very sparingly. Homeopathic remedies for pollen allergy work particularly well to treat chronic conditions.

Hay fever Attacks Troubling You? Homeopathic Medicines for Hay Fever are the Best Bet

Hay-Fever-Homeopathic-remediesHay fever is an allergic disorder which is caused due to an exaggerated response of the immune system to allergic substances or allergens. It is also known as “Allergic rhinitis” and has symptoms similar to the common cold; however, they often last for more than two weeks and typically do not include fever. Signs and symptoms of allergic rhinitis are running nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, stuffy nose, and eye irritation. Other eye symptoms include red, itchy and watery eyes, as in allergic conjunctivitis. Homeopathic medicines for hay fever enjoy an edge over other conventional treatment due to their holistic approach to healing. While the conventional treatment includes antihistamines and steroids, having very harmful side-effects, especially on children and elderly persons, homeopathic medicines are safer as they are made of natural substances.

Persons having hay fever are more likely to contract asthma or eczema (allergic dermatitis) in comparison to others. Hay fever is mainly of two types – seasonal and perennial. The seasonal type is that which occurs during a particular season when specific plants pollinate, while that which occurs throughout the year is perennial. People with perennial hay fever are allergic to one or more allergens (mostly indoors). These symptoms call for a recourse to a safe and non-toxic line of treatment that homeopathic medicines assure.

The most useful homeopathic medicines for hay fever are Arsenic Album, Allium Cepa, Sabadilla, Natrum Mur and Kali Bichromium.

Merits of homeopathic medicines for treating hay fever

In hay fever, the immune system overreacts to the allergens present in the air. As with other allergies, it is a result of your own immune system mistaking a harmless substance as a harmful one and releasing chemicals that cause the symptoms. Homeopathy seeks to stimulate a self-healing response from the person’s own immune system. The main goal of the treatment provided by homeopathy is to strengthen rather than weaken the immune system. Homeopathic medicines optimize the overactive immune system so that complete healing is more likely to occur.

Top Remedies for hay fever

The best homeopathic medicine for hay fever with thin, watery and excoriating discharge is Arsenic Album. When hay fever sets in every August, during spring, Allium Cepa is the most suited homeopathic medicine. Another remarkable homeopathic medicine Sabadilla is used often in spasmodic sneezing with a running nose; dry itching, tickling in the nose, rubs or picks at it. For hay fever with nasal obstruction, with distress and fullness at the root of the nose, Kali Bichromium is a good remedy.

Remedies for Hay Fever Occurring Annually:

The top-grade homeopathic medicines for hay fever occurring annually are Psorinum and Kali Phosphoricum. Psorinum is most indicated when the hay fever is returning regularly every year. Kali phosphoricum is another helpful homeopathic medicine for hay fever accompanied with violent sneezing and nervous irritability. These both are used as prophylactic medicines for hay fever.

Treating Hay Fever in Asthmatic People:

The best indicated homeopathic medicines for hay fever in persons having asthma are Allium Cepa, Arsenic Album, and Iodum. Hay fever that was suppressed by antihistamines that went into the lungs is treated well with Allium Cepa.
