Top Homeopathic Medicines For Brachial Neuritis

What Is Brachial Plexus And Brachial Neuritis?

The brachial plexus is a network of nerves that runs from the spinal cord in the neck to the armpit and supplies nerve fibers to the chest, shoulder, arm and hands. These nerves give sensation and movement signal to the arms, forearms, hands and fingers. Here, there are two exceptions – brachial plexus doesn’t provide nerve supply to trapezius muscle (on the back of the shoulder) and an area of the skin near the armpit.

Brachial neuritis is a condition that arises when nerves of the brachial plexus are inflamed or get damaged. It is also referred to as brachial neuropathy and brachial plexus injury. Other names for brachial neuritis are Brachial Plexitis, Parsonage-Turner Syndrome or Neuralgic Amyotrophy.

Homeopathic Management

Homeopathic medicines are highly reliable to manage symptoms of brachial neuritis. Homeopathic medicines stimulate the healing mechanism of the body to reduce the inflammation of nerves naturally and relieve the symptoms like pain, numbness, tingling, weakness in shoulders and arms. It is advised to take any homeopathic medicine under the supervision of a homeopathic physician who will prescribe the required medicine after complete case evaluation. Homeopathy is recommended when the problem is mild to moderate in intensity but in severe cases, and when there is paralysis of the arm or difficulty in breathing, then urgent help from conventional mode of treatment should be taken.

What Is The Cause Behind It?

It arises from damage to the nerves of the brachial plexus (network of nerves in the neck and arms). When the nerves are damaged, they are unable to send and carry signals to the spinal cord resulting in pain and other symptoms like burning sensation, numbness, tingling and weakness in shoulders. The damage may be due to an injury or infection. Brachial neuritis may also be genetic or related to autoimmune diseases in which the immune system attacks and damages the healthy tissue of the body itself out of a misdirected response. The Parsonage-Turner Syndrome is a type of brachial neuritis that arise without any cause and is linked to autoimmune inflammation. According to a research, brachial neuritis may also arise from damage to the protective myelin sheath that covers the nerve.

Any recent infection of the upper respiratory tract, flu or typhoid can also cause brachial neuritis, or it may be idiopathic (without any cause).

Though it may affect people of any age group, it frequently affects people aged between 20-60 yrs of age. The chances of brachial neuritis are more in males as compared to females.

What Are Its Symptoms?

In this condition, the pain arises mostly in the shoulder or the upper arm, sometimes the neck too.  The pain may radiate from the shoulders to the arms and the hands. The pain occurs suddenly and increases on moving the shoulder and the arm. The pain varies in nature, can be sharp, intense, stabbing, burning or electric shock like that varies from case to case. The pain is generally felt on one side but sometimes may occur on both the sides. With time, the pain goes away, but numbness, weakness and the tingling sensation stays in the shoulders. These symptoms may also occur in the arm and the hands. Severe cases of brachial neuritis  may lead to paralysis, and decrease in the muscle mass in the shoulder or the arm. Lastly, if the nerve to diaphragm is affected then it may lead to shortness of breath.

It can also arise from repetitive stress or overuse of muscle of thighs like from strenuous exercise, work out and physical activity that involves thigh muscles. Another reason is a sedentary lifestyle where a person remains in a sitting position for prolonged time and doesn’t engage in any physical activity or exercise. This causes harm to muscles resulting in pain. Next cause is pain from nerve involvement like irritation or damage of nerves. It can happen in case of peripheral neuropathy that commonly occurs from diabetes. There is a condition related to nerves called meralgia paresthetica that can cause pain, numbness, tingling, burning sensation in the outer area of thigh. It occurs from damage, compression or pinching of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. Some other medical conditions that can cause thigh pain includes fibromyalgia (a disorder in which widespread musculoskeletal pain occurs which is attended with weakness, sleep problems, memory issues and mood issues), various type of arthritis (joint inflammation) and deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot in the vein of leg that carries a risk of breaking off and travelling to lungs, heart or brain resulting in life threatening condition requiring urgent medical help). Apart from above it can arise if the blood flow to legs is decreased, femoral stress fracture (break in the thigh bone medically known as femur), infection of the thigh bone, and Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome (in this pain occur on outer side of thigh due to irritation from overuse or repeated stress of iliotibial band which is a thick fascia that runs down the outer side of thigh).

Formication – Symptomatic Management with Homeopathy

The term formication is derived from Latin word ‘formica’ meaning ant. Formication is a sensation of having insects crawling/biting on or under the skin. It doesn’t mean that insects are really present which are causing the sensation. It is actually a specific form of tactile hallucination, meaning a false perception of touch in the absence of any external stimulus or physical cause for it. These help in reducing the intensity and frequency of this sensation gradually. Homeopathic medicines for formication help in reducing the intensity and frequency of this sensation gradually.Homeopathic medicines for formication

In some cases the sufferer has a fixed delusion of parasitosis. In this case he has a firm and persistent belief that he is infested with parasites, insects or bugs when no such infestation is present. He may even say that he has seen worms or bugs crawling on or under the skin. This delusion is most common in case of formication of drug induced origin and occurring in middle aged or elderly women.

Formication is characterised under type of paraesthesia which means abnormal sensation on the skin with no apparent physical  trigger behind it. Paraesthesia also includes some other sensations including tingling, prickling, burning, numbness, coldness or pin needle like sensation. These sensations can affect any of the body parts but most commonly occurs in hands, feet, arms and legs. The reasons behind paraesthesia include pressure on a nerve, poor blood circulation, nerve damage.

Symptoms

Person affected may feel itching on the skin. This may lead to scratching and picking on the skin area where crawling is present. Scratching may sometimes be very severe to cause bleeding and excoriations of the skin. Scratching or picking also can damage the skin and cause cuts on the skin. It can get infected and lead to open wounds and skin ulcers. Depending upon the cause formication may occur with other symptoms. These include fatigue, body aches, stiffness in the body, tremors of the hands, difficulty concentrating, depressed feeling, or feeling agitated.

Causes

Formication can be a symptom of various medical conditions. First, it can be a symptom of anxiety. Next, it may occur in case of diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage that occurs in case of diabetes). Other conditions that may have a symptom of formication are fibromyalgia (disorder in which widespread pain in the body occurs which is attended with sleep problems, tiredness and issues with mood and memory) and parkinson’s disease (Degenerative neurological disorder that begins with tremors, muscle rigidity, slowness of movement and stooped posture). It can also occur in shingles also known as herpes zoster (A viral infection caused by varicella zoster virus. In this a painful, blistering skin rash occurs that affects one side of the body). Next medical condition that can lead to it is Lyme disease (an infectious disease caused by a bacteria of the type borrelia transmitted to humans by a bite from an infected black – legged / deer tick).

Apart from above it can appear in cases of skin cancer. Females who are around perimenopause age can also experience it.  It may also arise from use of some medicines (used for treating depression) or recreational drug use (eg. Cocaine and crystal meth). Other causes are pesticide exposure, mercury poisoning, hypocalcaemia, diseases of the spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Lastly it may arise from withdrawal of using alcohol or stopping use of certain drugs.

Complications

It can lead to poor sleep quality, tiredness, concentration difficulty, frustration, anxiety, depression. The complications that can arise from constant scratching of skin includes skin infection, skin ulcers, gangrene, fever and sepsis in severe cases.

Natural Homeopathic Remedies For Hand Weakness

Hand weakness is usually described by a person as weak grip of hands, clumsy hands, numbness, hand fatigue, or heaviness in hands. The person may also have an inability to carry objects in hands and may also complain of pain in hand. Homeopathic remedies for hand weakness treat the root cause behind it and bring relief in these cases.

Some common symptoms that a person can have in addition to hand weakness includes tingling / numbness in arms, hands or fingers; pain wrist, fingers; stiffness in hands or fingers; loss of sensation in hands; pin needle sensation in hands or fingers; weakness in arms; difficulty or inability to hold objects; involuntary hand movements.

ReasonsHomeopathic remedies for hand weakness

Everyone tends to experience temporary hand weakness at some point of their life. It can be due to tiredness, a result of doing over exertion which usually recovers in some time. However, in many cases it could be arising from some medical reasons. Hand weakness can arise from several medical reasons.

Hand weakness mainly arises when the muscles of hands or the nerves that control it get damaged, diseased, fatigued and are not able to work properly. Less commonly it can result from joint diseases or disease of bone, fractured hand bones, skin issues that reduce skin elasticity or disease of blood vessels that causes reduced blood supply, burns, nutritional deficiency, alcohol intoxication and side effects of some drugs like corticosteroids when used for a long time.

First medical reason behind hand weakness is carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) – it is one of the most common reasons behind hand weakness. It arises from compression of the median nerve while travelling through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. It is mostly caused by overuse and repetitive activities/strain injury of the wrist and hand eg. typing, some machine use with hands, piano playing for long hours from long time. It results in numbness, tingling, pain, burning sensations in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and radial half (thumb side) of the ring finger. It can also lead to weak grip strength in hands and lack of coordination of hands.

Secondly, it can arise in case of diabetic neuropathy (Damage of the nerves  mainly feet and legs initially followed by the hands and arms from uncontrolled blood sugar levels for a very long time). In this case numbness, tingling, burning sensation, sharp pain, weakness in hands and feet tend to appear.

Third cause responsible for it is radial neuropathy or ulnar neuropathy. Radial neuropathy (Saturday night palsy) is a neuropathy (damage of nerve) resulting from acute trauma to the radial nerve that travels from the armpit down the back of the arm to the hand. It mainly causes wrist drop; numbness of back of hand / wrist; Weakness or  loss of coordination of the fingers; inability to  straighten the fingers voluntarily.

Ulnar neuropathy (Cubital tunnel syndrome) occurs from compression or irritation of  the ulnar nerve  where it crosses the elbow. It causes pain, numbness, and weakness in the arm, forearm, fingers and weakened  grip.

It can also arise in case of a herniated disc (slipping of some part of the soft jelly of the intervertebral disk from the centre  out of its tough exterior part) in the upper part of spine (cervical spine).

Additionally, it can occur in brachial plexus injury or disorder. In this there occurs trauma, injury or inflammation of the network of nerves arising from the neck region (brachial plexus) responsible for sending signals from spinal cord to shoulder, arm and hand.

Another cause is median nerve palsy. The median nerve begins from the brachial plexus and enters the hand through the carpal tunnel. Any damage to this nerve can lead to problems with hand, wrist, thumb movement; and hand weakness.

Other than this it can happen in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) which is a degenerative  nervous system disease  in which nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord responsible for controlling muscles are affected. Initially it presents with twitching, stiffness and weakness of muscle beginning in hand, feet, arms, legs.

Other nerve conditions where hand weakness can arise includes  Guillain Barre syndrome – GBS (an autoimmune disorder where  immune system of body attacks the nerves of peripheral nervous system and cause weakness, tingling and numbness in the limbs) and multiple sclerosis ( a progressive disorder where immune system damages the protective myelin sheath of the nerve fibres hindering communication between  brain and the rest of the body ).

Apart from above weakness of hands can appear from damage or disease of muscles. Some of these include                                                                                                                                                                                                                           injury to muscle, myasthenia Gravis ( a neuromuscular disease leading to weakness of skeletal muscle in varying intensity), polymyositis (inflammatory myopathy that causes inflammation of the muscles) and muscle atrophy (wasting of muscle).

Next reason is Tendonitis ( Inflammation of the tendons which are the thick cords that connect muscles to bones). One example is De Quervain’s tenosynovitis ( a condition in which the tendons on the thumb side of wrist are affected leading to pain and swelling near the base of your thumb and trouble moving thumb and wrist)

Less commonly, it can also happen in cases of arthritis (joint inflammation) like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In this swelling, pain and stiffness occurs in joints. It can also lead to weakness  of hands and difficulty in movement of hands when hand joints are involved.

In some of the cases there may appear weakness of hands all of sudden that can be indicative of some serious medical issue like stroke (in this poor blood flow to the brain leads to cell death)  needing  urgent medical help.

Homeopathic Remedies for Hand Weakness

Uncontrolled high levels of sugar in blood for a long time damages blood vessels and nerves. The nerve damage hinders normal travel of nerve signals to many body parts and also feet. Nerve damage in legs and feet refers to peripheral neuropathy. Persons who have high blood pressure, take alcohol, are overweight and smoke are at high risk of nerve damage. In case of diabetic neuropathy along with burning sensations, tingling, numbness, sharp pain, weakness in hands and feet can also accompany.  Secondly, it can arise from excessive intake of alcohol that causes nerve damage called alcoholic neuropathy. Thirdly, it can occur from certain nutritional deficiencies. Deficiency of vitamin B12, B6, folate can lead to nerve damage and burning sensation in feet. Vitamin B deficiency also causes anaemia that contributes to it. Another reason is small fiber sensory neuropathy (SFSN) which is a type of peripheral neuropathy affecting small nerve fibers in the skin. In this, painful burning arises in the feet.

2. Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) is yet another reason behind burning feet. In this condition, swelling appears which puts pressure on nerves and causes a burning sensation. Other symptoms of this condition include weight gain, loss of energy, hair loss and dry skin.

3. Other than these, it can occur in Charcot – Marie – Tooth disease (CMT). A common form of hereditary neuropathy that causes nerve damage in arms and legs. Burning, pins and needles in the feet / hands is among the initial symptoms.

4. Another reason is Athlete’s foot (fungal infection of the foot). It is also known as tinea pedis. In this condition burning, tingling, itching sensation between the toes or in the soles of the feet arise. Besides, fluid-filled eruptions (blisters), cracked skin, peeling of skin, dry or raw skin on the feet may appear. Sometimes toenails get thick, discoloured, crumble and get detached from the nail bed.

5. Long term or chronic kidney disease – When kidneys get damaged and are not able to carry their function properly, means not able to remove toxins from the body, then these toxins build up in blood and damage the nerves.

6. Erythromelalgia – It is a rare vascular disorder in which blood vessels in lower limbs or hands get blocked on and off followed by hyperemia (excess blood flow) and inflammation. Redness, congestion, heat and pain in feet occur though symptoms can also appear in hands, arms, ears, legs, face and other body parts.

7. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) – In this condition, the arteries that carry blood to the legs and feet becomes narrow. It leads to burning in feet and legs.

Supportive Homeopathic Remedies for Guillain Barre Syndrome

Guillain Barre Syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). It is a serious disorder and the initial symptoms are weakness, tingling and numbness in the limbs. It can eventually lead to paralysis. Homeopathic Remedies for  can be used along with conventional mode of treatment to manage the symptoms. homeopathic remedies for Guillain Barre Syndrome

Causes

The exact reason behind Guillain – Barre syndrome is still unknown. In this syndrome the immune system (that normally comes in action to destroy the microorganisms like bacteria, virus, parasites) starts to attack the nerve cells out of a misdirected response. It has multiple types and among them the most common form is AIDP (acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy). In AIDP the protective covering of the nerves known as myelin sheath is damaged. Due to this damage the nerves are not able to send proper signals to the brain and weakness , numbness and paralysis can arise. It has been found that in most cases it  occurs some days or weeks after a respiratory illness or a digestive tract infection. Persons of any age group can be affected with this but the risk increases with advancing age. Its chances are more in males as compared to females.

It can be triggered after an infection with campylobacter jejuni bacteria (most times found in undercooked poultry). Some other infections have also been associated that can trigger it. These include cytomegalovirus, influenza virus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), AIDS causing HIV virus,  mycoplasma pneumonia and zika virus. Hepatitis A, B, C and E, Hodgkin’s lymphoma are also associated with the occurrence of this syndrome. Apart from above other triggers linked with it are a recent surgery and vaccination.

Symptoms

In the beginning tingling sensation or weakness is felt in the feet, toes and legs. Afterwards it spread to the upper body, arms, fingers. However in some of the cases (around 10%) the initial symptoms can occur in the arms or face. With the progression of the condition paralysis may appear after muscle weakness. Its signs and symptoms may include tingling, prickling sensation or pins and needles sensations in fingers, wrists, toes, ankles. Next is muscle weakness in legs that spread  to the upper body. There is difficult / unsteady walking and sometimes a person with this is unable to walk or climb stairs. Other symptoms include difficulty in  moving face (from loss of control over facial  muscles) that causes difficulty in talking, chewing or swallowing; and difficulty in  eye movement and double vision. Rest of the symptoms that can arise includes intense pain in lower back; severe shooting, cramping pain that may increase at night; difficulty or loss of bladder control or bowel control; rapid heart rate; difficult breathing; low or high blood pressure and paralysis. There are chances of progression of the symptoms quickly  resulting in a serious condition in a matter of just a few hours in some people.

Types

This syndrome has many types. The major types are as follows :

  1. Acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) – in this the muscle weakness begins in the lower part of the body and ascends upward.
  2. Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) – in this case paralysis begins in the eyes.
  3. Acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) and acute motor-sensory axonal neuropathy (AMSAN)

Complications

The complications includes difficulty breathing when the weakness / paralysis involves muscles that control breathing; weakness, numbness and other sensations even after recovery;  blood pressure problems; heart problems like cardiac arrhythmias; blood clots; bedsores that can happen from long immobility; severe nerve pain; problem with bladder and bowel function.
